DH and I both big Beatles fans, I have always loved the name Loretta. Thoughts?

I thought of Life oof Brian too!

Also... Loads of Lorettas in Ireland?! Confused

singsingbluesilver · 31/05/2021 23:52

Life of Brian - first thing I thought of.

GiveIrelandBackToTheIrish · 31/05/2021 23:49

I think it's quite sweet

RosieGirl27 · 31/05/2021 23:47

Hate it. Hate the way Lydia from Towie pronounces it too

xprincessxjanetx · 31/05/2021 17:11

Sorry I don't like it at all.

SemperIdem · 31/05/2021 00:48

It’s not the worst name ever, that’s Ethel, but to me Loretta is an ugly name.

Lorena is similar but far nicer.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 31/05/2021 00:42

"where's the foetus going to gestate? In a box?"

There's 3 of us able to quote from that scene, on a random MN thread.

Im not even a Monty Python fan, but, that film is massive - even if you haven't heard of it, she'll get Stan as a nickname.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 31/05/2021 00:38

@RaspberryCoulis yes I completely agree. Can I add:

What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies, when he can't have babies?
....It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression!
It's symbolic of his struggle against reality....

alexdgr8 · 31/05/2021 00:35

to me it sounds like the name of a college, or of a convent.
i've never heard of the other associations people are mentioning.
and what is the likelihood that children growing up with her would have heard of them either.

i think it is a classy name.
i can imagine a high court judge,
the honourable ms justice loretta higgins.
that's the test for me, to avoid micky/minnie mouse type names.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 31/05/2021 00:31

Nope, there are too many Monty Python fans. She'll be known as Stan.

user1471604848 · 31/05/2021 00:28

I'm Irish, and have never heard of a Loretta in Ireland. Just Loretto schools.

Very American, country and western hill-billy vibe.
Didn't like it when Lydia from TOWIE chose it.

lemondrophannah · 30/05/2021 17:21

I think of 80s mums. And TOWIE because a cast member called their baby girl Loretta

Serpenta · 30/05/2021 16:13

I'm Irish and I can't recall ever meeting an Irish Loretta. Loads of Loretto schools though.

MissM2912 · 30/05/2021 16:12

Sorry- you are right it isn’t Irish. I assumed it was as there are so many of them in Ireland! I suppose if it is Italian and with the Pope etc that makes sense lol. Definitely doesn’t make me think of america

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 30/05/2021 16:11

Nothing ending 'etta' is going to be an Irish name 🙄 It's Italian.

MissM2912 · 30/05/2021 16:07

Laughing at all the American comments- it is an Irish name and there are piles of people in Ireland called Loretta.

cornflowersandbluebells · 30/05/2021 16:05

I must miss the context as I don’t get why that quoted bit is funny at all.

ladygindiva · 30/05/2021 14:58

@RaspberryCoulis

Francis : Why are you always on about women, Stan?

Stan : I want to be one.

Reg : What?

Stan : I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to call me 'Loretta'.

Reg : What?

Stan : It's my right as a man.

Judith : Well, why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?

Stan : I want to have babies.

Reg : You want to have babies?

Stan : It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them.

Reg : But... you can't have babies!

Stan : Don't you oppress me!

Reg : I'm not oppressing you, Stan! You haven't got a womb! Where's the foetus going to gestate? You going to keep it in a box?

🤣 Made me smile
whosappleman · 30/05/2021 14:54

Love it!

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 30/05/2021 14:53

Strangely, I quite like it. But then I quite like Italian-American 'Bronx-ish' names. Loretta, (Marga)Rita, Angie, Gloria. I sort of wish I'd had the courage to call my daughter Gloria.

RubyFakeLips · 30/05/2021 14:46

I love it. Think it’s gorgeous. Names are of course personal taste but it’s easy to pronounce, easy to spell, no obviously awful connotations, not dated to a particular moment in time and is a proper name. Nothing wrong with it.

Most people under 50 if not 60 aren’t going to be familiar with Loretta Lynn.

Makes me think of someone warm and lovely, maybe even vivacious. So much more charm and character than the endless Susannah, Philippa and Ottillie sort of shit I see people waxing lyrical about on here.

mocktail · 30/05/2021 14:34

It immediately makes me think of Loretta Swit from MASH, which is a very positive association Smile

I've never met anyone with the name but I know a Lorena which has a similar feel.

I really like it!

Washyourtoes · 30/05/2021 14:25

@TatianaBis

Enough nonsense *@Washyourtoes*
What nonsense?
TatianaBis · 30/05/2021 14:19

Enough nonsense @Washyourtoes

MissingTheMoonlight · 30/05/2021 14:09

I know a woman called Loretta who is absolutely lovely and vibrant but it seems like a dated name to me despite this.
