How would you pronounce Ffion?

So, the name Ffion is really growing on me. However, we live in England and I'm wondering how easy it will be for people to pronounce and whether it's a name they'll be familiar with. It's a Welsh name, meaning 'foxglove'. Thanks.

In the nicest possible way I think you are over-thinking this Grin

So my daughters middle name is Ffion (we live in wales). Non of our English family have any issue saying it tbh. Now my sons middle name is Llion and that one gets interesting pronunciations haha. As welsh names go ffion is easy to say and I think most people can work it out. It is a lovely name.

Fee-on (on as in the word on, not 'un').

I'm English but my maternal family are native Welsh speakers and that's how my relative Ffion pronounces her name.

My DS has a classmate called Ffion. I've never hear any of the kids/ parents/teachers having issues pronouncing it. Feeyon.

I really like it and Ffion is my sons class is a lovely smiley girl. I think she suits her name.

Berthatydfil · 29/05/2021 09:12

You do not extend the F
In the Welsh alphabet there is no V and single F makes the V sound.
Double F (FF) makes the English F sound
So it’s pronounced Fe-on

Similarly Fred in English and Ffred in Welsh both are pronounced as “Fred” and Vodka is spelled Fodca but pronounced the same.
If you aren’t Welsh don’t live in Wales then you could drop the one F to regularise the English pronunciation but in Wales she could be called Vion.

Oh good, this is reassuring! I also think it's pretty straightforward, but DH was worried the spelling might throw people a bit...

Fee-yon

It’s pretty well known because of William Hague’s wife. I think it will start to get popular as an alternative to Seren, so I’d use it now! It’s lovely

WhatMattersMost · 29/05/2021 09:00

Ack! Thankfully I don't know any Ffions and so I've only been mispronouncing it in my head Grin

WhatMattersMost · 29/05/2021 08:59

Fy-on

Hohofortherobbers · 29/05/2021 08:59

I've been saying it wrong, fiff-fion. Good job I've never known one irl

Duke4 · 29/05/2021 08:56

I know a Ffion and it’s pronounced Feeyon.

30littletoes · 29/05/2021 08:55

Another Ffee-on because that’s how my Welsh friend says her own name 😄. It’s quite popular in England now I think.

4PawsGood · 29/05/2021 08:55

Fee-on

How are you thinking people might pronounce it? Fy-on? I think people are right and Ffion Hague has saved you from that.

EssentialHummus · 29/05/2021 08:55

I’d have probably said Fie-on. Oops.

thisplaceisweird · 29/05/2021 08:55

Fee yon too, rhymes with 'pee on'

Spied · 29/05/2021 08:54

Fee on

SushiGo · 29/05/2021 08:54

I thought Feeyon as well.

SleepingStandingUp · 29/05/2021 08:53

Fee-on because that's how the Ffion I know pronounces it

Thisisus909 · 29/05/2021 08:52

Fee-on
But I wouldn’t be certain so would probably check with the person.

kowari · 29/05/2021 08:49

Fee-on

DinosaurDiana · 29/05/2021 08:48

Feeyon

JustKeep · 29/05/2021 08:48

Feeyon. William Hague’s wife is called Ffion so English people may be more familiar with it than before.

KingdomScrolls · 29/05/2021 08:47

Feeyon , had a colleague with that name and that's how she pronounced it

LittleRa · 29/05/2021 08:47

Fffyon with less of a “feee” sound and a longer “ffff”

mamas12 · 29/05/2021 08:46

Same
It’s not hard is it
And such a beautiful name
