Terry

If we have a boy my partner wants to name him after his grandfather which means Terry or Terence.

I'm really not keen, but it would mean so much to him and the more I hear it the more I get used to it, but the people I have spoken with are horrified!

Is it as bad as I and my friends think? Do I need to just hope it's a girl?

I like it! Baby Terry 🧡

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 23/05/2021 13:36

I like it, it’s refreshing without being out there.

ILoveShula · 23/05/2021 13:30

I like it

daytrogen · 23/05/2021 13:30

I like it :)

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 23/05/2021 13:18

I know a Terry in his late 20's. I quite like it.

Luckingfovely · 23/05/2021 13:09

I also think you can do the honour thing just well with a middle name - I would personally insist on this as would never in a million years call a baby either version.

Flymetothestars · 23/05/2021 12:47

I'd use it as a middle name

sundowners · 23/05/2021 12:23

Its very chavy to me- if you want me honest opinion. Stand firm- if boy use as middle but not first name.

campion · 23/05/2021 12:19

So much better than the Silas, Arlo, Jaydon, Jagger nonsense

What's nonsense about Silas or Arlo? Silas gets a spot in the bible so not too recent nonsense, and Arlo has been around for centuries too. Strong names the both.
Jaydon and Jagger not in the same category.

Terence /Terry sounds like an old school pub landlord to me. Definitely not cute, though who needs a cute name?

cushioncovers · 23/05/2021 12:06

I really dislike Terry for either sex. Sorry not helpful.

PuffinBadger · 23/05/2021 12:05

I'm not keen but more importantly you said you're "really not keen" and "Is it as bad as I and my friends think?" So use it as a middle name and pick something you both like

Magenta82 · 23/05/2021 11:55

Thanks for the input so far, part of the difficulty is I can't think of a boys name I absolutely love. I have a girls name and he is said yes straight away to that.

If I did agree I'd probably go with Terence, it kind of is growing on me, other people hate it, but it's not their baby I guess.

I think it's cute. Lots of people are naming their boys things like Freddie, Bobby, Ronnie, Reggie, Lenny, Teddy etc.

Why is Terry so different? It makes a refreshing change from Archie and Alfie at least!

I would put Terence on the BC though as another option. And actually, that has grown on me while reading this thread!

Estasala · 23/05/2021 10:36

Terrible

user1493494961 · 23/05/2021 10:35

It depends what the first name would be otherwise. If you're in the Jaydon/Kaiden/Braydon camp, I would say choose Terry.

DotDotDotDotDot · 23/05/2021 09:33

Maybe as an honour middle name but not sure about as a first name. Your lovely new baby deserves his own name and also a name that you love too.

emijs · 23/05/2021 09:25

There are so many baby Teddy’s. Terry isn’t too dissimilar. I can see it making a comeback.

FoolsAssassin · 23/05/2021 09:24

The long and short of it is you can’t be calling a child a name you really aren’t keen on , regardless on what others think. Middle names are a bit different.

PerveenMistry · 23/05/2021 09:18

@spookycookies

I think it's cute. It's a recognised name and much better than all the made up/wrongly spelt names most people ask about on here.

Isn't that the truth.

I know several attractive, accomplished men named Terry; it's a good solid name.

So much better than the Silas, Arlo, Jaydon, Jagger nonsense.

partyatthepalace · 23/05/2021 09:17

Christ no - I wouldn’t do it.

I think you have to gently but firmly explain to your DP that while it’s lovely to honour a grandfather it’s not fair to saddle a child with what will be perceived as an old man name. It really isn’t ok and it is selfish - it’s a gesture for your DP, but your son is the one that has to live with it. Middle name is fine.

I don’t think by the way that names like Terry and Keith and Barry are about to come back - they might do in 20 years, but right now retro names are only just moving out of 25 years of Victoriana to late Vict/early 20th c names like Ernest and Jean - so Terry and Sandra are a way off.

mogtheexcellent · 23/05/2021 09:16

Assuming your baby will also have his grandfathers surname (although as ytou are unmarried I would double barrell it) I would go for middle name. Use one or all of excuses above.

I dont loathe it but I also don't love it and there are better names out there.

wtheck · 23/05/2021 08:54

You can't do it to your poor kid.

Terence is ok but Terry is hideous.

Just makes me want to wave my hands about and say 'calm down, calm down'.

whattodo2019 · 23/05/2021 08:50

Middle name zone only

pilates · 23/05/2021 08:47

Middle name only

GroggyLegs · 23/05/2021 08:47

I know a Terry and a Terri - both women.

Honestly, it's no worse than the other cheeky chappie names that have been very popular for the last 5-10 years.

But if you're not keen, it really should be a middle name. It's not fair to guilt you into it - plus your baby is a unique little human and deserves their own first name (IMO).
