Terry

If we have a boy my partner wants to name him after his grandfather which means Terry or Terence.

I'm really not keen, but it would mean so much to him and the more I hear it the more I get used to it, but the people I have spoken with are horrified!

Is it as bad as I and my friends think? Do I need to just hope it's a girl?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/05/2021 19:45

Not my taste tbh but Terence would be OK as a middle name.

BikeRunSki · 24/05/2021 12:37

He’ll almost certainly be the only one in his class, which seems to be the aspiration of most people on this board.

WildCherryBlossom · 24/05/2021 12:33

I really like Terence. Immediately think of Terence Stamp. I've often wondered whether it will make a comeback. Go for it OP

Mrbob · 23/05/2021 23:54

My 40 year old friend is called Terry. He HATES it. I think a middle name is a nice nod

Sunbird24 · 23/05/2021 23:46

My first thoughts were Terence Trent D’Arby and Terry Wogan.
I think it’s one of those names that will start having a comeback because of people doing the same thing you’re thinking about, you’re just ahead of the trend.

GallopingGreen · 23/05/2021 23:38

I really like it. I think it would be cute on a little boy and it's a solid man name too. It's also nice to be able to say yes it's a family name, named after grandfather etc.
Also... terry wogan Grin what's not to love?!

Gucci1961 · 23/05/2021 22:41

I prefer it to Arthur which I find so ridiculous.
There is nothing to choose between Arthur and Terry in my opinion.

ElizabethTudor · 23/05/2021 22:41

It’s bloody awful.
Middle name fine. Terence, in recognition of grandfather.
First name no.

Tillygetsit · 23/05/2021 22:39

I'm not overly keen on either name but I do think a child should have a name of her/his own and any honouring should be done as the mn.
My friend is named after her mums best friend. They fell out 20 years ago.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/05/2021 21:05

Terence has a nice enough sound but is one of those Kenneth, Ronald, Graham type names that seem quite dated at the moment. However I much prefer the full name to Terry (possibly because that sounds slightly feminine to me). Agree with pp - can you convince him to use it for a middle name instead? Weirdly though, I like Teresa for a girl if that matters- sounds a bit more classic imo and Tess is a cool nn.

IsThePopeCatholic · 23/05/2021 21:04

Nooooo.

Serpenta · 23/05/2021 20:56

I don't think I could ever love someone enough to agree to their wish of naming our child Terry.

daisypond · 23/05/2021 20:54

I like Terence. One of my DC was at school with a Terry.

patienz · 23/05/2021 20:06

Great name

RickiTarr · 23/05/2021 19:59

Terrence is a fabulous name.

HoldingTheDoor · 23/05/2021 19:25

It's dreadful.

Ameteurmum · 23/05/2021 19:24

Not a fan. Everyone I know called Terry is in their 60’s. Although I have a friend in her 30s called Terri. As with everything it’s each to their own, if you don’t like it then relegate it to a middle name. Names are a very personal thing so just make sure you please yourself and your situation because whatever you suggest someone won’t like it or would know a ratbag with the same name!

TatianaBis · 23/05/2021 16:55

It's a joke 80s name at this point.

Get him to watch the old Harry Enfield 'Scouser' sketches.

Terence is fine as a middle name.

Twinkie01 · 23/05/2021 15:27

It's like David or Alan, you'd have to call him Baby Terry.

Theforest · 23/05/2021 15:27

I like Terence and know a kid with that as his middle name after his late grandfather. He likes it as it's unusual and he knows the significance.

Dogoodfeelgood · 23/05/2021 15:21

I quite like Terence! It’s definitely not as bad as Kevin/Keith etc

Dogoodfeelgood · 23/05/2021 15:20

@partyatthepalace

Christ no - I wouldn’t do it.

I think you have to gently but firmly explain to your DP that while it’s lovely to honour a grandfather it’s not fair to saddle a child with what will be perceived as an old man name. It really isn’t ok and it is selfish - it’s a gesture for your DP, but your son is the one that has to live with it. Middle name is fine.

I don’t think by the way that names like Terry and Keith and Barry are about to come back - they might do in 20 years, but right now retro names are only just moving out of 25 years of Victoriana to late Vict/early 20th c names like Ernest and Jean - so Terry and Sandra are a way off.

I have an aunt & uncle who are Terry & Sandy, so this made me chuckle 😂
ChrisWitlessPatrickUnbalanced · 23/05/2021 14:21

@user1493494961

It depends what the first name would be otherwise. If you're in the Jaydon/Kaiden/Braydon camp, I would say choose Terry.

Yes I think it depends on what area you live in. Terry wouldn't stand out with all the Jaydons, Archies, Alfies, Reggies but if the kids at school will all be Alexander, James and Hugo then no.

NoddingTulip · 23/05/2021 14:16

I'd be more tempted to use it as a middle name. I'm not a fan of Terry, but quite like Terrance.

LynetteScavo · 23/05/2021 14:00

I used to know an amazing little boy called Terrence, so I'm biased and think it's a great name. I'm not so keen on Terry. Al the Terry's I've known are women actually called Theresa.

I'd go for Terrance with the nn Teddy.
