If we have a boy my partner wants to name him after his grandfather which means Terry or Terence.

I'm really not keen, but it would mean so much to him and the more I hear it the more I get used to it, but the people I have spoken with are horrified!

Is it as bad as I and my friends think? Do I need to just hope it's a girl?

Not a fan sorry. It’s very dated, better for a middle name

C0nstance · 05/06/2021 21:40

Finbar
Makes you wonder if Fin will be like Barry one day!

jaundicedoutlook · 05/06/2021 09:17

If Terry is short for Terence, is Barry short for Barence?

VodkaSlimline · 04/06/2021 11:09

Phew! Congratulations on not having to call your baby Terry

Magenta82 · 04/06/2021 11:02

Panic over, just had the 20 week scan, it's a girl!

Esme it is.

Terry reminds me of the scousers in Harry Enfield, sorry. Also not a fan of calling babies after family members, they’re a person in their own right, not just a replacement for the dead person. Middle name would be ok.

3CCC · 24/05/2021 22:32

Compromise and have Terry as a middle name

Tiffanny · 24/05/2021 21:53

I don't like it

But also, don't see how it's worse than Stanley, alfie, Archie, Arthur

Serpenta · 24/05/2021 21:49

Tezza will definitely happen at some point

ElderMillennial · 24/05/2021 21:40

I don't like it OP

But it's about what you both want, not just your DH

I'm sure you have relatives or grandparents you could choose to make the baby after too

MintMatchmaker · 24/05/2021 21:37

I don’t like it at all although it is my Uncle’s name. He doesn’t like it either though so I’m sure he won’t mind me saying so.

A middle name of Terence would be a nice way to honour the relationship.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/05/2021 21:35

I like it. Terry Hall, Terry Wigan, what's not to love.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 24/05/2021 21:28

disaster.

pray for a girl

pilates · 24/05/2021 21:27

🤞 it’s a girl

Marlena1 · 24/05/2021 21:21

I know a young Terry who goes by TJ (did since before birth and it stuck). I think that's nice.

Loveatortie · 24/05/2021 21:14

I quite like it,been a long time since i met someone called Terrance. I was at primary school in the 60's/70's. Names come and go,if you like it,go for it. Always wonder if my name will make a comeback??

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/05/2021 20:35

If its a girl the name I picked is Esme

You clearly have excellent taste Grin

Magenta82 · 24/05/2021 20:34

@MrsTerryPratchett

Spike Milligan was a Terence.

Mammyloveswine · 24/05/2021 20:06

Ha I have a relative called Terry, named after the song "Terry" (he rode into the night...accelerated his motorbike..)

I don't know any Terry's younger than 50 tbh!

But as a middle name it's fine (Terrance).

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/05/2021 19:57

I LOVE IT.

steppemum · 24/05/2021 19:55

I have very close relative who is terry, and my friend's dad is too. Both are late 70s So on that basis it must be due a revival.

But I have to say it was a horrible naff name back in 1940 when they were named it, and has been a naff name through every single decade since. I don;t think it has ever been popular or in style.

Use it as a middle name. Find something you both like for a first name.

TotorosCatBus · 24/05/2021 19:50

I like Terence but not Terry which makes me think of chocolate oranges Wink

I think Terence works as a middle name but not as a first name

Serpenta · 24/05/2021 19:48

I don't like i but Terence would be a good name to shout when your child was in disgrace

TERENCE get down here now!

TERENNNNNNCE, take that crayon out of your nose!

Nohomemadecandles · 24/05/2021 19:47

Eesh. It's Barry & Terry to me. The Scousers
