So i was planning on naming my daughter Raven, she's due in September, but i found a really nice unusual name but i don't know what other people would think about it, Shado. What do you think of the name Shado? TIA

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
merrymelody · 23/05/2021 01:59

Yes! Raven from Team Titans!

FetchezLaVache · 23/05/2021 01:55

Shado I hate for all the try-hard, saddo reasons stated above.

I don't hate Raven quite as much but then I quite like Raven out of Teen Titans (a cultural reference you might want to bear in mind when making your decision, OP).

Mistressiggi · 23/05/2021 01:52

Shaddo (or any variant ending in o) is more likely to be rhymed with saddo than if it was actually Shadow imo. But Shadow is a very horsey name I think.

Justlovedogs · 23/05/2021 01:47

Mmm, I must be old. All it makes me think of is the TV series UFO and SHADO (an acronym for Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation)...

Sorry, OP. Raven is better, if having somewhat dark connotations.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/05/2021 01:24

Raven is nice.

Shado just sounds made up. Sorry.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/05/2021 01:01

OP if you want it pronounced shadow, why not just spell it Shadow?

Thedogscollar · 23/05/2021 00:47

Nope to both.

Musication · 23/05/2021 00:47

I am a teacher and if I saw this on the register I would pronounce Shaydo. So I think most people would. I think it's a terrible name to saddle a child with but Raven is okay .

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/05/2021 00:42
@youvegottenminuteslynn agreed!

I assumed they're being daft teenagers, although technically I suppose that only applies to Bella?... I had DS in my teens and thank god for he was a boy because we had picked out a hideous edgy name for a girl that I would be mortified with now 🤣

Most of the other Twilight names were pretty decent though.
Just looked up a list to refresh my Twilight memory and they're actually all nice names IMO, except Emmet which I'm not a fan of. And Renesmee obviously - I'll never understand that decision!

I like Raven, makes me think of the show That's So Raven which I grew up watching and the girl was called Raven.

I dont like Shado spelt like that as I read it as Shay-doe and took me quite a lot of reading down the thread to realise it was Shadow. To be fair I don't mind Shadow spelt like Shadow though. It's very pretty and feminine as a name, similar sounding to Shana, Shawna etc.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/05/2021 00:24

@Meganoctavia

Twilight characters had pretty normal names though
Except Renesmee which was absolutely ridiculous Grin
KezzabellaB · 23/05/2021 00:24

I like Raven. Shado is not my cup of tea sorry

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/05/2021 00:24

Shado I would 100% think is pronounced shay-dough. Like playdo
With sh at the beginning.

MrsApplepants · 23/05/2021 00:23

Don’t like either. They both sound like you’re trying too hard to be dark and different. Raven has connotations with death and Shado rhymes with saddo.

funnyoldonion · 23/05/2021 00:20

Please not Shado, sounds so chavvy, you'll regret it but she'll be stuck, I like Raven due to the Owen child too but it's way better than Shado

Cleverpolly3 · 23/05/2021 00:18

@Tillygetsit

I once met a blonde blue eyed Raven and she,was delightful. Theres nothing wrong with a Gothic name and the OP shouldnt be patronised and spoken down to because it's not your cuppa. Raven is lovely. Just Raven Octavia is enough without another name making it a bit of a mouthful. Raven Morgana is good too.
My daughter has a gothic name. I like a lot of gothic names but as with any “genre” names there is potential for overload

Raven is a marmite name IMO
Raven Octavia is very dramatic some might say OTT. If I heard Raven Octavia I’d assume that was fist name and middle name as opposed to first name and surname

People bring honest in their opinions isn’t necessarily patronising

AtrociousCircumstance · 23/05/2021 00:14

Shadow -

a shadow of her former self

following them around like a shadow

Shadowy character

All negative. Don’t do it. Raven is nice though!

Crankley · 23/05/2021 00:10

Shado reminds me of 'saddo' so not keen.

Zzelda · 23/05/2021 00:04

Shado is terrible. Don't do it to her.

PattyPan · 22/05/2021 23:59

Shado is awful, please don’t burden your child with that!

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles · 22/05/2021 23:52

"Theres nothing wrong with a Gothic name and the OP shouldnt be patronised and spoken down to because it's not your cuppa."

But the OP is looking for genuine reactions to the names. Surely that's the whole point of her post?

I don't mean this unkindly but both names strike me as trying a little too hard to be edgy and gothic. If your daughter doesn't live up to her mysterious name it might fall a bit flat. Just my opinion through experience with similar names!

Sunny4876 · 22/05/2021 23:48

Love Raven.

SteveArnottsCodeine · 22/05/2021 23:41

Raven makes me think of two things: 00s Disney Channel dross ‘That’s So Raven’ and the gothic Edgar Allan Poe poem where the titular raven represents death. Neither of these are things I’d want associated with my infant daughter. I’d go as far as to say I’d nevermore want to name my child Raven.

Shado I’m assuming is a misspelling of Shadow? I don’t like the name either way, but “Shado” sounds like how someone from my native Essex would pronounce the word, making it at least twice as bad as a name.

If you like gothicy sounding names what about:

Elvira
Rainn
Willow
Nova
Luna
Lilith

Or Wednesday after Wednesday Addams? All better than Raven and/or Shado.

EvilOnion · 22/05/2021 23:32

I like Raven but wouldn't base it on the idea that she'll be dark haired/eyed.

DH and I are both dark haired as is our eldest, youngest was born with spiky black hair but it gradually lightened and now at 8 she's very light blonde haired and blue eyed!
