Only as a nickname, far too cutesy for an adult

Pinkypink · 21/05/2021 13:18

I love the name Katya with Kitty as a nn

BettyUnderswoob · 21/05/2021 11:16

I love it!

I think it’s one of those old lady names that’s having a bit of a resurgence.

I agree with a PP that children don’t really tease each other for their names as much as is suggested on here. I was a primary school teacher for many years and rarely saw it.
Even the most common names will be new to many children on starting school, so pretty much anything goes without judgement.

Nonameyet1 · 21/05/2021 09:58

I’m undecided. I quite like it but prefer Kit, which I’m sure it would get shortened to as an adult?

Beetlewing · 21/05/2021 09:45

My Grandmother Kathleen was known as Kitty. It's lovely

Auxence · 21/05/2021 09:38

Really like it! I met a little one once (unsure if it was a full name or nickname) and it doesn't strike me as remotely teasable. It's a well known name, a bit unusual but traditional and quite fashionable at the moment.

dahliaaa · 20/05/2021 23:42

Another relative here.
Kathleen - always known as Kitty / Kit by everyone.
Except on her birthday when my uncle used to raise a glass to her and say 'Happy Birthday my Kathleen.'
And she used to reply 'oh be quiet you old fool' and wink at him.
They adored each other.

IslandLulu · 20/05/2021 23:31

Ok if real name is Katrina or Katherine. By itself, no.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 20/05/2021 22:58

@Workinghardeveryday no offence taken!

GreenWasabi · 20/05/2021 22:58

Love it

Workinghardeveryday · 20/05/2021 22:49

Looks like it’s very popular, I suppose we all like different names otherwise we would all call our kids the same names!

Workinghardeveryday · 20/05/2021 22:47

@GingerAndTheBiscuits sorry didn’t mean to offend.
To clarify, as a nickname very cute but as others have said I think a nickname and not proper name.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 20/05/2021 22:46

It can be shortened further to Kit - I know a couple of adult creative types that go by Kit and it really suits them

DramaAlpaca · 20/05/2021 22:45

It's not a standalone name to me, but it's very sweet as a childhood diminutive of Katherine or similar names.

Cbeebiesrehab · 20/05/2021 22:37

Really like it! Would but a longer name on the BC though incase she grows up and is a bit of a tomboy or something, I’d imagine it’s quite a hard name to pull off if you’re not super girly

barbrahunter · 20/05/2021 22:09

Another one whose gran was Kitty, short for Kathleen.

Arrowheart · 20/05/2021 22:07

Love it!!!!

Happycat1212 · 20/05/2021 22:05

Kitty cat - it’s very little and weak for a full name, but Ok as a nn for Katherine/Katrina/whatever - that way if it doesn’t suit her she has options.

Evenstar · 20/05/2021 20:56

It’s beautiful I have known two and no teasing at all. Earl Spencer’s niece is Kitty, though I am unsure if that is NN for a longer name.

lottiegarbanzo · 20/05/2021 20:49

I love it. I'm not even quite sure why but somehow the name is a different word, than the word for cat.

I would use a longer 'proper' name. Katherine seems obvious but you could use Catriona, Christina or even Christabel.

HunkyPunk · 20/05/2021 20:48

Can you imagine how much stick the other kids would give a child named Kitty!!!

I just don't think they would. I think children being teased about names is an MN thing. I have never come across or heard of a child being bullied about their name in my 23 years, so far, of having children at school! There are so many unusual names around, that I don't think Kitty would merit a second thought, other than thinking what a pretty name it is.

AliciaMayEmory · 20/05/2021 20:46

My granny was called Kitty (born in the early 1900s). Her full name was Kate but I never heard anyone call her this, only Kitty it Kit. I love it, as it reminds me of her and she was such a lovely woman.

cariadlet · 20/05/2021 20:46

I also taught a Kitty. She's a lovely girl and wasn't given any stick for it.

I'm in my 50s and when I was at school, everybody had a fairly conventional name. These days, children are so used to unusual names that they don't bat an eyelid at words which I wouldn't even have thought of as names until I met children called that word. Kitty is pretty pedestrian compared with some of the names that I've come across.
