Hiya,

That time has come when its time to start thinking about baby names. We are unsure of the sex.

For a girl I have always liked the name Unity, thoughts? I am aware of the likeness to Unity Mitford as many people think it reminds them of it. I think that Unity Mitford was so long ago and children if this generation won't know of the connection.

For boys names we like Rigby, thoughts?

Thanks all.

The names are very similar. We used to call our landlord Rigsby.

Digby is better.

Pemba · 19/05/2021 14:10

Ooh, yes you are quite right Kirsten. Daft of me.

Eleanor Rigby then. But that's a sad association, and still far too surname-y.

Auxence · 19/05/2021 14:08

I think the Unity Mitford connection is a bit too strong. As others have said, she's the only Unity that springs to mind.

You might like Amity (meaning friendship), Verity or Liberty?

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2021 13:52

Rigby makes me think of Eleanor. Great song but not a great association.

The landlord in Rising Damp was Rigsby.

If you like the Mitford link, I think any of the other Mitford sister names are nicer than Unity, which is a harsh sounding name.

I agree. Out of curiosity I've just had a look at the Mitford family tree and found these (some are middle names, some aren't blood relatives, but they seem similar in style).

Clementina
Constance
Sybil
Lucy
Frances
Susannah
Anna

Also, Unity's middle name was Valkyrie, which I quite like!

Rigby sounds pompous to me.
It’s not often that I don’t like name suggestions on here, but I really can’t find anything I like about these two - sorry!

Chilldonaldchill · 19/05/2021 13:17

Nancy Mitford is having a bit of a revival with the adaptation of the Pursuit of Love so I think some people will know the Mitfords.
I'm afraid I'm not keen on either name.
Whilst I quite like the concept of virtue names I think they are hard to wear. Verity and Constance are probably the easiest two.
Rigby is very rough sounding to me, sorry.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/05/2021 13:13

Both terrible. Sorry.

Pemba · 19/05/2021 13:11

Unity Mitford is the only famous Unity. Anyone that reads history will know about her, not a good association. Una? Trinity?

Rigby, just a surname. Older people will think of the miserly landlord Rigby from the sitcom '' Rising Damp'. It is still repeated regularly on one of the ITV channels. Again, not a good association.

I think you should think again, sorry!

SleepingStandingUp · 19/05/2021 13:08

Unity is ok, not my particular taste but a good solid name. I'd think 😯 once then think it's just her name.
Right is a surname and not even a pretty one

Beamur · 19/05/2021 13:05

Love Unity.
I'm old enough to remember Rising Damp so Rigby is a bit of a no from me! Not so many youngsters will know that though. I quite like it though.. excellent name for a cat or dog too.

partyatthepalace · 19/05/2021 13:01

I quite like Unity, and deffo due a revival. Agree Mitfords not known to younger people.

Not so keen on Rigby... just feels like a random surname to be honest.
