name thoughts?

Hiya,

That time has come when its time to start thinking about baby names. We are unsure of the sex.

For a girl I have always liked the name Unity, thoughts? I am aware of the likeness to Unity Mitford as many people think it reminds them of it. I think that Unity Mitford was so long ago and children if this generation won't know of the connection.

For boys names we like Rigby, thoughts?

Thanks all.

I love different names, but have to say that I don't like these choices. The first two have horrible associations and don't sound very nice. The third one isn't a name, it's a misspelling, and like most of the new misspelt versions of names, sounds really rough.

Keep looking, I would suggest Grin

WildCherryBlossom · 24/05/2021 12:43

Oh and Kaeli - she will be spelling it out her entire life. Keep looking.

WildCherryBlossom · 24/05/2021 12:41

If you like Unity how about Verity or Honor which have a similar vibe.

Unity Mitford was a Hitler groupie. She was obsessed by him, basically stalked him until she managed to befriend him. And her final years were rather sad, long ill health with brain damage after she shot herself. it's not a great association.

And Rigby? Well Rigby & Peller - bra makers. Do you really want to saddle a boy with that?

SleepingStandingUp · 24/05/2021 00:38

Slight change of wind, what do you think of the name Kaeli pronounced Cayley?

I like Kayleigh and haven't seen it spelt like either of yours, I wonder if people would wonder if it's pronounced Kelly or Keyley on a quick look? Ceilidh to me is the dance rather than a name. I do love a good ceilidh tho

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/05/2021 19:55

I've never seen it spelt Kaeli - only Kayleigh like the song (I wasn't aware of the original Gaelic version). It's a nice enough name - not a particular fave of mine (as I tend to prefer classical names), but has a pretty sound.

diddlediddle · 23/05/2021 17:28

Kaeli I would think immediately is quite a chavvy name (soz)

Unity I think is less clear on background. It's very unusual but there is a solidity to it, I don't mind it.

Digby is better than Rigby as it's a proper name.

Gucci1961 · 23/05/2021 17:27

Sorry, Ceilidh is the spelling common to both Irish and scottish gaelic so I'd use that spelling.

Gucci1961 · 23/05/2021 17:24

Caelidh is ok, I think it looks a bit sloppy when it's spelled any other way.

Kay is nice though. Kay Magaly with Kay Ly for short!
If you like Kaeli what about Eilidh? Eye-Lee

Gucci1961 · 23/05/2021 17:20

What about Magaly?

I didn't know that Unity Mitford was a nazi.

AlmostSummer21 · 23/05/2021 17:17

Nope, nope & nope from me.

Not that it matters but you did ask.

Gucci1961 · 23/05/2021 17:16

I like Unity. It's very unusual but not 'what the hell did I just hear?'' so that's a good balance.
Rigbeeeeee! is just too rising damp though!

What about Jacoby?

TatianaBis · 23/05/2021 17:13

I can only hear Rigsby in Frances de la Tour's voice.

Cindie943811A · 23/05/2021 14:13

Kaeli sounds good. Where does it come from?

peaceinourtime · 23/05/2021 12:57

Thanks everyone,
I still like Unity, it's a shame that Unity Mitford was the only other well known Unity.

Unity isn't very nice. I automatically though of nits - what if people shorten it to Nitty? Rigby reminds me of Lee Rigby

MercyBodle · 20/05/2021 00:02

I like both, especially Rigby. Digby with nicer sounds!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/05/2021 23:04

Unity is very pretty - but I think the Mitford connection would stop me from using it personally (as she's who I instantly thought of). I'd stick with the more commonly used Verity as I'd be concerned about too many others making the same connection when hearing the name.

Rigby - I just think it doesn't have a very nice sound (it's just too surname as well), sorry.

Tillygetsit · 19/05/2021 22:44

Totally agree with this ☝️

Cbeebiesrehab · 19/05/2021 20:30

I rarely say a flat out no to names but I will say it to both of these.
Unity- the Unity Mitford link would be enough for me not to touch the name with a barge pole, if she took a liking for history she absolutely wouldn’t thank you.
Sadly Rigby reminds me of the tragedy surrounding Lee Rigby-for that reason I couldn’t use it myself.

Pemba · 19/05/2021 18:30

There is also Eva Peron, Eva Marie Saint, Little Eva, Eva Cassidy, dunno, lots of Evas! Very mainstream European name, Eva Braun is one amongst many.

So it's hard to compare to the extremely unusual Unity. Which is why the Hitler connection looms large with Unity, not with Eva.

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2021 17:54

But Eva and Ava are hugely popular and the most famous Eva was Eva Braun.

If you like Unity, use it.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 19/05/2021 15:41

Verity is much nicer

Pemba · 19/05/2021 15:06

Don't know about 'needs to make a return', Unity has always been extremely unusual even when Unity Mitford was around I believe. It's kind of harsh-sounding, like a bank or corporation, or a trade union. Other names ending in 'ity' are nicer, eg Trinity, Verity (as suggested above).

I would say Charity, Chastity (like Cher's daughter, now trans), but no, they're a bit unfortunate because of the meanings. But there must be other 'ity' names.

Mimilamore · 19/05/2021 14:20

Unity is a fabulous name and needs to make a return.
Not so keen on Rigby but it could grow on me...,

KirstenBlest · 19/05/2021 14:14

and it's a change from all the trendy R names that are popular.
