Happy to hear other suggestions (boy name been sorted for years lol) but mostly looking for thoughts on current shortlist:

Esti - OK on its own but it is a lovely nickname
Oula - presume this is Oola rather than Owla. Quite like this. People may be confused on pronunciation.
Hester - also like
Erin - absolutely loathe
Dasha - nice but this is a nickname and I think the Santa joke point definitely an issue
Meri - this will basically sound identical to Mary in English

Lissie87 · 18/05/2021 19:17

@CaffiSaliMali Eseld is so lovely but sadly doesn’t flow well into our surname.

@ILoveStickers I’m not sure where I got Latin from! It’s Finnish for ‘sea’.

I like Meri but it does make me want to sing Sosban Fach 'mae bys Meri-Ann wedi brifo...'. Merryn is lovely.

From your list I really like Hester and Erin.

Rosa is on my non-Welsh girls list and I also like Juliet, Lyra, Naomi, Cassia, Louisa, Verity and Sabrina.

Eseld, Elowen, Morwenna and Lowenna are some lovely Cornish names, given your heritage.

mellongoose · 17/05/2021 06:00

I have a Rosa. Her sister is Chloe.

JemimaJoy · 17/05/2021 05:29

*as classy as Rosa or Merryn, I mean.

JemimaJoy · 17/05/2021 05:28

Love Esther but Esti looks and sounds a bit like STI so wouldn't go with that! Meri and Erin are fine, don't like the others except Merryn which I love. None of these names are as classy. I'd definitely choose Merryn. Other names that sound nice with Rosa are Clara, Nina, Anna.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/05/2021 23:43

While I don't think sibling names need to "match" as such, most of your list seems very unusual compared to Rosa. Of your choices I like Erin best, my second pick would be Hester (although I prefer Esther).

Rosa is pretty, quite simple and classic and very international so I'd guess her sister to be named something similar - Eva, Anna, Sara/Sarah, Lara, Laura, Maria, Marina, Elena, Julia, Claudia, Teresa or the like, if that matters?

ILoveStickers · 16/05/2021 20:53

I tell a lie - merum means "neat wine" (ie not mixed with water). So meri is "of neat wine" in Latin?

Oula seems to mean "owl" in Cornish - is it used as a name too?

ILoveStickers · 16/05/2021 20:50

Meri is Latin? How so? It's not a Roman name or a Latin word.

EugeniaGrace · 16/05/2021 20:48

Rosa is a lovely name.

I like Esti if short for Esther.

Meri but if short for Meredith or Merryn.

You could have Mary, Marie, Marianne or Maria nickname Masha too.

Greenmarmalade · 16/05/2021 20:43

‘Rosa and Oula’ flows nicely.

I have taught lots of Russian Dashas- nice name.

Lila
Leila
Orla

DennisTMenace · 16/05/2021 20:39

Hester and Erin are my favourites.

Synchrony · 16/05/2021 20:21

I know a Daria who goes by Dasha. She is half Russian. To my knowledge no-one has made any reindeer jokes, it's not that unusual a name.

I like Hester and Erin the best, then Dasha, then Meri. Oula makes me think of "does the hula from Hawaii". Esti isn't a name to me.

partyatthepalace · 16/05/2021 20:05

Yeah - it’s the reindeer thing - I think if you called her Daria on the birth cert and then used Dasha as short - then at least she’d have options if she got fed up with the Santa jokes

PassGo · 16/05/2021 20:03

I like Meri best.

Esti would be nice as nickname for Estela.

TatianaBis · 16/05/2021 20:02

Dasher is one of Rudolph’s red-nosed reindeer. I like Dasha but you will get reindeer jokes.

Cornish and Russian is an interesting combination:

I love Iseult and Bryher/Briar, Oksana & Tatiana (obv).

Lissie87 · 16/05/2021 19:40

@partyatthepalace Could you tell me why Dasha doesn’t work in English? I really like it t don’t want to make a faux pas!

Lissie87 · 16/05/2021 19:38

@partyatthepalace I’d forgotten about Merryn, thanks

OP posts:
Lissie87 · 16/05/2021 19:38

@1Hazel1 Oula is Cornish, Meri is Latin. Esti is just a short form of Esther and Dasha is Russian. Though I don’t believe it necessarily matters I do actually have Cornish and Russian heritage !

OP posts:
partyatthepalace · 16/05/2021 19:09

Hester is nice, Erin is Ok - Esther is nicer than either though - Rosa and Esther is a lovely combination I think.

The rest are a bit of a cultural jumble, and don’t translate well into English even if you have scandi/Russian heritage.

The Irish Oona or Orla would be easier than Oula, Daria which is the full form of Dasha works better in English, Merryn (Cornish), Meredith, Marina, or Marianne rather than Meri (Meri could be a nn), Esti is short for Esther anyhow, but it’s really not a full name.

Rathmobhaile · 16/05/2021 19:08

When I saw Rosa I thought of the name Carmen. For me they have the same vibe.

Theoldwoman · 16/05/2021 19:04

I love Erin.

Rosa and:

Clare
Amy
Juliet
Caroline
Charlotte
Annie

Cotswoldmama · 16/05/2021 18:54

I'm not keen on Hester but what about Esther?

1Hazel1 · 16/05/2021 18:45

Erin and Hester are nice. What culture are the other names from? I haven't heard any of them before.
