In order of preference (best to worst):

Girl:
Alice
Margot
Florence
Grace / Amelia

To be honest, they are all fairly safe choices.

The only 1 of your boys names I like is William

I have a Magnus. My DP suggested it, and I seem to remember I laughed at the time. I’m so pleased we chose it. Of my three children’s names, this gets the most positive reactions, particularly from men. I think it’s a name they wouldn’t mind having themselves. A bit Viking-esque, I suppose. I like names with a bit of history. It’s quite unusual in England, but everyone has heard of it, and knows how to spell it. Don’t discount it because of a couple of negative comments here - it normally gets a really positive response, both on Mumsnet and in real life. It has brought me a ridiculous amount of happiness! Have fun choosing.

Inafastspin · 14/05/2021 09:15

Grace - strong, beautiful, timeless
Alice - a bit twee for my liking
Florence - again, a classic and I personally like most of the possible nicknames
Amelia - it has a nice sound, but is very 'now' if that bothers you
Margot - I blow hot and cold (largely because of its similarity to the word Maggot in english), but it has a certain dignity about it

Atticus - really not sure about it. There's something I enjoy, but also something very try hard about it
Magnus - I like this one. It would suit someone of any age I think
Hugo - like it. It has a certain energy about it
Louis - a bit boring to my ear, and possible pronunciation issues if that would bother you
William - Not to my taste and I greatly dislike the possible nicknames, though I think this is just a personal irrational dislike! I would go for Edward or Edmund over William, which I see as similar feeling names

garlictwist · 14/05/2021 05:56

Margot is awful. I like the other girls names.

Not so keen on the boys names apart from William

MercyBodle · 14/05/2021 05:22

Love:
Grace

Love every one of your boy's list!! Magnus is my all-time favourite!

Margot and Louis are my favourites from your list. I like all of them though.

What about Martha?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/05/2021 23:15

3.Grace - okay, a bit dull/over popular.
1.Alice - classic/timeless, can't go wrong name.
2.Florence - a bit retro trendy, but has a lovely sound.
4.Amelia - popular, and Shakespearean Emilia looks nicer imo.
5.Margot - too trendy, not keen on the sound.

3.Atticus - lovely, maybe slightly brave as very associated with TKAM
2.Magnus - Scandi/aristo cool with nice nn's in Max and Gus.
5.Hugo - too trendy, but classic Hugh is nice.
4.Louis - okay, not a particular fave.
1.William -classic/timeless, can't go wrong name, great namesakes.

sarah13xx · 13/05/2021 22:57

Girl:

Grace - really like
Alice - nice but heard it a lot on here
Florence - too florally for me personally
Amelia - classic, love it (would probably go for it)
Margot - really like it just now

Boy:

Atticus - not keen sorry
Magnus - not keen sorry
Hugo - nice enough but a lot of dogs names seem to be Hugo that I know
Louis - my favourite
William - I like Billy/Billie but don’t think I’d use William as the name I actually called him

alexdgr8 · 13/05/2021 22:56

all are pretty good.
personally not so keen on Margot or Magnus.

MAMAW31 · 13/05/2021 22:51

@partyatthepalace

All girls names are fine, very popular, not super exciting.

Similarly for boys... other than Atticus which is more stand out - I like it, and Magnus which is a bit unusual, I don’t especially like it.

Any suggestions instead? 😃

Margot- don't like

Atticus - awful
Magnus - ok
Hugo - ok

BramStoker · 13/05/2021 21:48

Alice and Magnus are my favourites

I prefer Hugh to Hugo

Ceepeee · 13/05/2021 21:48

Grace - I've been put off this name ever since I heard someone pronounce it as 'Grice'
Alice - no strong opinions on it, nice enough but prefer Alicia or Alessia, especially as they are similar to Amelia below
Florence - ok but not a massive fan, the nickname options are good
Amelia - ok but I hear mealy
Margot - strongly dislike. I mostly don't like how it looks written down and it is probably a bit faddy.

Atticus - I like this
Magnus - no
Hugo - no
Louis - yes a lovely name
William - perfectly pleasant

Echobelly · 13/05/2021 21:45

I mean, a lot depends on surname. I tend to think unusual first names go better with common/ordinary surnames than more unusual ones.

Eg 'Atticus Brown' - cool
'Atticus Frogmorton' - a bit much

Or other side

'William Brown' - totally forgettable
'William Frogmorton' - a bit more gravitas

That said, kids have an unusual surname and not especially common names. But I was willing to consider names like Jennifer and Edward because of them having their dad's (interesting) surname, whereas with my (very boring) one those names would have sounded extremely... beige.

LakeShoreD · 13/05/2021 21:43

I think we share very similar taste, apart from Magnus (sorry!)x My favourites are Louis or Hugo for a boy, Margot or Alice for a girl.

Echobelly · 13/05/2021 21:40

Grace - nice, a bit boring
Alice - ditto
Florence - Do quite like it
Amelia - a bit boring
Margot - Probably the one I like most, but I expect it's gonna get quite popular

Boy:

Atticus - I like it, though it has a bit of a reputation as 'archetypal wannabe hipster name'
Magnus - Nice
Hugo - also like it
Louis - a bit overused
William - a boring name in itself, but I do like the nicknames Will and Bill

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/05/2021 21:38

@MAMAW31
It’s just not to my taste. I think it sounds too harsh and a bit pretentious and try hard. Not a pleasant sound.

I prefer names like Theodore, Lucas, Jesse, Cameron... though so we probably just have different tastes.

Checkingout811 · 13/05/2021 21:38

Love the girls except Margot.
Amelia Grace is beautiful. As is Florence Amelia. Grace Amelia.

Only like Louis from your boys list.
Hugo William goes well.

EvilOnion · 13/05/2021 21:38

I like Alice and Louis.

Grace, Amelia, Hugo and William are fine.

I really dislike Margot, Florence, Atticus and Magnus.
