Naming my daughter Atlas?

I’m really starting to love Atlas for a little girl. Originally this was our boy name, and I still love it for a boy too. Could we use it for either gender? Big sister is Aurora.
Aurora and Atlas as sisters?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

In the event that you are a fan of or inspired by Ayn Rand, I'd go with Alisa (her original name), Kira (We The Living), or even Liberty or Dagny over Atlas for a girl.

Pemba · 12/05/2021 16:00

Please don't do that to your daughter, Atlas is such a very masculine name. It's an extremely muscular legendary male character, holding up the world. Or a book of maps.

There are so many wonderful girls' names (more so than for boys I think), so just WHY?

No, absolutely not. Awful for a girl,

wildeverose · 12/05/2021 15:36

Athena is so much nicer - atlas is a boys name, and not the nicest one at that

MissScotland101 · 12/05/2021 15:33

@Happycat1212

No it’s not nice, though I’m surprised people are suggesting Atlanta that’s equally awful.
Exactly! and I have a friend whose cats name is Athena so that’s awful too!

Sorry but that’s a no from me, what a shame on the child to be called Atlas, you won’t be doing them any favours for when they reach school, mind you with names like Destiny, Kayden, Jayden, all coming from the younger generation then maybe Atlas ain’t that bad in comparison Grin

PlanDeRaccordement · 12/05/2021 12:12

I wouldn’t. It would be like naming a boy Aphrodite or Diana. You have to think of the child’s feelings.

CatRamsey · 12/05/2021 12:12

I love Atlas for a boy. I wouldn't mind it on a girl. Actress Shay Mitchell called her daughter Atlas and it suits her.

SingingSands · 12/05/2021 12:10

Oh no, that's a pretty rubbish name for anyone.

Atlanta might be better?

But on another note, it might be best to avoid having the same initial as their sibling. Aside from it sounding a bit "matchy" I had the same initial as my dad and he once opened some very confidential mail of mine!

imnotprincessbubblegum · 12/05/2021 12:08

Lovely name. I'd actually prefer it for a girl.

Aerielview · 12/05/2021 12:04

I'd consider it to be more of a boy's name. What about Atlanta?

summersolstice43 · 12/05/2021 12:03

Thats just setting someone up to get bullied at school really.

Edenember · 12/05/2021 12:00

Sorry but I agree with pps. It’s too masculine for a girl, she’ll feel envious of Aurora and there is teasing potential. There’s been lots of other lovely suggestions that would go very well.

Serpenta · 12/05/2021 11:45

I'd wonder if you were an Ayn Rand fan. I'd hate for anyone to think I was inspired by her.

MadeOfStarStuff · 12/05/2021 11:28

I don’t like it even as a boys name but as a girls name it’s just awful!

Aurora is beautiful, surely there’s another beautiful girls name that you can find for DD2?!

MooseMoose · 12/05/2021 11:22

Sorry OP but I think it's awful, even for a boy. Seems a bit try-hard to me and sounds very harsh. And I agree that I'd feel short changed if I was called Atlas and my sister was Aurora. Atlanta is similar but much nicer.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/05/2021 11:10

No - she'll have the piss taken out of her for years.
Try again.

user1493494961 · 12/05/2021 10:44

Well to gauge reaction call yourself Atlas for a while and see how you feel.

sibbys · 12/05/2021 10:22

Yeah why not

AnnaSW1 · 12/05/2021 09:43

I only know it as a boys name

Tal45 · 12/05/2021 08:53

Aurora is beautiful - lights in the sky. Atlas - a bloke carrying the weight of the world or something to look countries up in. I'd definitely go for Athena or Atlanta.

Kitkat151 · 12/05/2021 08:51

Definately a boys name IMO
