In all my posts forgot Morana, seen as the Slavic counterpart to Hecate. Goddess of cold, frost, winter, death, rebirth and dreams.

motherloaded · 09/05/2021 13:39

People can, and should, change their own name but calling a baby "Hecate" or some of the other examples on this thread? Really?

You know a real person, a real child will have to carry that until they are adult. Cringey at best.

TatianaBis · 09/05/2021 13:37

Modern Greek Ek aar tee, Ancient Greek Hek aar tay.

BlueLobelia · 09/05/2021 13:35

I love the name Hecate.

So many brilliant names.

Bronte was a name that was relatively popular when I was growing up. It was certainly common enough that it was not worthy of comment as being unusual (not in the UK). So i have always thought of it as a regular name. I can see now how it would be gothic.

Soubriquet · 09/05/2021 13:29

Heh-ca-tay

Imissmoominmama · 09/05/2021 13:25

How do you pronounce Hecate?

“DeadButDelicious
My tastes run dark, so it stood to reason that my choice in names would go that way too, we chose something that was fairly uncommon, had a slightly spooky connection (not at all obvious to anyone but us to be honest) but still a perfectly nice name for a little girl and a grown woman. I was under absolutely no illusions that she may like pink and unicorns and Princesses and lo and behold she does! Just like I did when I was her age. I didn't swan out of the womb in black lace and pikes. That's not quite how it works.”

This reminds me of a wonderful sight some years back in East Germany: an utterly fierce looking Goth couple dressed head to toe in black, while between them, holding their hands, was a pink, petticoated and beribboned little girl of about five!

Runforwine · 09/05/2021 12:21

Maybe Robyn is personal to me as it's my friend's name and she is very alt, gothic. Although I agreed that Brontë isn't gothic/dark.

PinkJellycat · 09/05/2021 10:54

My favourite thread for a long time.

My DD is Daphne, after Daphne Du Maurier.

Sylvie
Rowena
Mona (the Vampire)
Elowyn/Elowen (Cornish for elm)
Ula (Cornish for owl)
Hebe

I think it's been mentioned a few times but I love Hecate.

I've seen a few comments now that imply that those of us of the goth/dark persuasion must want our children to grow up the same as us and will be bitterly disappointed if they don't and that really isn't the case, at all.

My tastes run dark, so it stood to reason that my choice in names would go that way too, we chose something that was fairly uncommon, had a slightly spooky connection (not at all obvious to anyone but us to be honest) but still a perfectly nice name for a little girl and a grown woman. I want my daughter to grow up to be herself, not a miniature version of me. I don't know any goths who've had children and given 'spookier' names, to then be disappointed when there son or daughter doesn't 'live up to it' or whatever. Liking things that kids tend to like isn't a disappointment for us.

I know a Wednesday who dresses in rainbow colours.
Be careful, you are bound to have a Lilith who wants to wear her bright red team strip or pale pink frilly leggings every day.
