@medebourne

Why on earth would anyone want to choose a 'sinister' name for their baby?! Are you a sinister person? Do you hang out with sinister people? Do you want your child to hang out with sinister people?

Being gothy when you're a suburban teenager and want to shock your neighbours and parents is quite interesting and 'edgy' I suppose, but why put that on your baby?

You might think it's naughty and rebellious to do graveyard chic, but is that seriously what you want for your child?

What an odd comment. Not sure anyone said anything about a 'sinister' name and I don't see how wanting a 'gothic' name is any different to wanting a name inspired by nature, mythology, Shakespeare, astronomy, the bible etc. Agree with pp, it makes a refreshing change from the usual Evies, Alfies, Isabelles etc.

A word of caution. I get that you may be of a gothy persuasion yourself, but as a mother of a budding border-line goth girl, the performative angst is nerve-wracking. DD is doing her best to hide her goofy, zany nature under a bushelful of pale foundation in order to 'do' goth right, and it is such a shame. I was a punky goth in my teens so I get it, but maaan, it's hard work.

Makes a nice change from all the Olivias and Esmes that a knocking around

Funnily enough, I think of Esme as quite a dark name. Makes me think of Esmerelda, Quasimodo and depressing French literature.

On the other hand, I might have another baby just so I can call her Cthulina.

ShadierThanaPalmTree · 08/05/2021 13:05

🤣🤣 fair point!

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 13:04

Little vampire teeth maybe (ouch)

@LynnInAVan

What is a "goth baby"?
How is a "goth baby" different to other babies?

KurtWilde · 08/05/2021 13:03

My kids all have dark gothic type names, they always get complimented on them. A poster also listed my name, which I love. I'm thrilled my parents thought outside the box.. although it did suck when I wanted a personalised mug as a kid and they only exist for generic names Grin

tinaturnover · 08/05/2021 13:02

And any Harry Potter name too Smile

tinaturnover · 08/05/2021 13:01

P.s this thread is quite refreshing

tinaturnover · 08/05/2021 13:01

Merle
Fae
Sabrina
Narcissa
Millicent (just because it reminds me of Maleficent)
Vespera
Ophelia
Emerald
Valentina
Poe
Syvlia
Coraline
Morticia
Delora
Sapphire
Belladonna
Scarlett
Rowena
Cat (Even better if your surname is Black)
Sorcha
Ciara
Amethyst
Gail
Tabitha
Lilith
Bronte
Lucinda
Priscilla nn Cilla (come to think of it Cilla Black had an awesome name, very Harry Potteresque)
Ebony
Levina
Victoria

P.s although I LOVE this idea of a dark witchy girls names please don't go with something OTT like Draculina. There are plenty of dark names that are perfectly acceptable just as there are plenty or floral, mythological or princessy names so I don't see any harm in wanting a bit of a gothic influence as long as you don't go overboard. As someone else suggested if you like an especially unusual and dark name you could always use it as her middle name for e.g Clara Crimson Jones or Tessa Darklake Smith 😉.
