Oh and Nightshade/Shayde or Ivy

Edenember · 08/05/2021 13:53

Sable means black and is used to reference mourning attire but it’s also the animal valued and farmed for its fur, much like mink, so it’s probably too associated with the wrong kind of darkness. An objectively beautiful word though.

Ishbel and Peggy feel like Scottish witchy names to me. Sybilla, Sìofra (changeling), Charmian, Margeaux, Millicent, Morgane, Beatrix. If thinking elementally - Aella and Alizeh are both wind / air names, Eseld means ice warrior, Ondine is water nymph, Tallulah is sparkling water, Aphra is dust (earth), Osha is shining (fire).

@medebourne

Why on earth would anyone want to choose a 'sinister' name for their baby?! Are you a sinister person? Do you hang out with sinister people? Do you want your child to hang out with sinister people?

Being gothy when you're a suburban teenager and want to shock your neighbours and parents is quite interesting and 'edgy' I suppose, but why put that on your baby?

You might think it's naughty and rebellious to do graveyard chic, but is that seriously what you want for your child?

This! Saved me typing it.

"Graveyard chic" Grin

Top of my list atm is Rowena which I’m often told is ‘witchy’ although I didn’t think of it like that, but I definitely don’t mind the association! It’s probably the Harry Potter link. There are plenty of names I think have a witchy feel in look or sound (clunky) but don’t necessarily have any direct association that way. Cordelia, Tilda, Iona, Iolanthe, Ianthe, Evanthe, Evadne, Imelda, Thora, Thelma, Zorah, Thebe, Isadora (wizadora?), Wren, Beulah, Bess(ie), Tess(a), Eudora, Cressida, Ida, Ena, Edwina, Morven, Maev(e/a), Minerva, Ginevra, Inez, Celeste, Ostara, Trudie, Autumn, Ariadne, Hortense, Lunete and obviously Hecate which has to be the witchiest of them all, surely. Star & celestial, nature and names of myth and legend often fit well into this bracket. Jorah means Autumn rain which lends a nice Halloween vibe. Weirdly Hannah springs to mind as I seem to recall this name being prevalent in local folklore stories of elderly ladies believed to be witches. Then there’s also the noun type names probably best suited to middles - Ember, Fable, Salem, Pagan, Sage, Moon. Pagan’s probably a bit much, although I suppose no one bats an eye at Christian.

Misery Sorrow
