Dolores/Lola - pain
Soledad - loneliness
Elvira - fair
Perdita - lost

Dolores does mean sorrow, but it's a reference to the Virgin Mary, so the name does not traditionally have connotations of sadness. Ditto soledad, which actually means solitude, and also refers to Mary.

Thanks for the explanation of why Marian could be considering dark and gothic. I've never heard of that song.
Being Irish means, Marian, to me, will always be a middle aged woman in comfortable, but good quality clothes who is married to an accountant or a solicitor.

I was desperate to call a DD Lilith but we'll, 3 boys had a veto from silly husband who thought it was too dark.

Also love Raven. DS goes to school with the blondest little girl called Raven who super shy and quiet, but I reckon just wait til she's a teen.... Also The 100

@ScrollingLeaves

“DeadButDelicious My tastes run dark, so it stood to reason that my choice in names would go that way too, we chose something that was fairly uncommon, had a slightly spooky connection (not at all obvious to anyone but us to be honest) but still a perfectly nice name for a little girl and a grown woman. I was under absolutely no illusions that she may like pink and unicorns and Princesses and lo and behold she does! Just like I did when I was her age. I didn't swan out of the womb in black lace and pikes. That's not quite how it works.”

This reminds me of a wonderful sight some years back in East Germany: an utterly fierce looking Goth couple dressed head to toe in black, while between them, holding their hands, was a pink, petticoated and beribboned little girl of about five!

Oh I love that! Smile

Modern Greek Ek aar tee, Ancient Greek Hek aar tay.
R? There’s no r in Hecate. That’s ridiculous.

Do you mean -ah?

Anyway it’s pronounced with a short a as in Apple not ah like what you would say at the dentist. And certainly not arrr like a pirate. There’s absolutely no r in it.
