Ariadne?

I've always loved this name, but not sure I'd ever use it. We have a double barrelled last name, so I worry it would sound ridiculously posh. It's also a bit of a mouthful and I can't think of any nice nicknames - not keen on Addy. Opinions? Do you know any?

Stunning name 😊 I do actually think it’s wearable, with the right surname. A beautiful, elegant form of an -ie sound ending, change from all the cutesy names ending in this.

Great name - I'd love to be called something interesting like this. I like Harrie for a nickname.
Other possible nicknames:
Ria
Ida (pronounced Eda)
Annie

A pp mentioned The Borrowers - that was Arietty.

Hmmm... this is definitely confirming my own thoughts. I also love the Agatha Christie connection. Maybe I'll use it as a middle name instead. Thanks for your comments everyone.

Lovely sound to it.

SelkieFly · 05/05/2021 23:06

I prefer Arianne

Ariadne is a bit hard to say.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/05/2021 23:05

Don't know any personally but I really like it - it reminds me of the Agatha Christie character (Ariadne Oliver) as well as the myth. I thought it might have become more popular/well used after the film Inception, but apparently not. I suppose it isn't the easiest name to say, plus there is the arachnid thing. But she could always go by Annie if she dislikes it?

simpleyellowshoes · 05/05/2021 23:05

I have no idea how to say that name.

TempsPerdu · 05/05/2021 22:51

Hypothetically it’s beautiful. But I think it’s one of those names that’s a lot to live up to. The only Ariadne I’ve ever met (in my year at school) was awkward, dumpy, lank-haired and spotty, and spent every lunchtime hiding in the library reading sci-fi novels. Her unusual name, and the fact that she was the opposite of what everyone imagined an Ariadne to be, unfortunately made her stand out even more.

Happenchance · 05/05/2021 22:23

I like it and like the nickname Ari.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 05/05/2021 22:07

I don't mind the name but it is a name you have to think about reading, it doesn't roll off the tongue so to pair it with a double barrelled name is a bit much.

VenusClapTrap · 05/05/2021 21:54

Too close to arachnid for me.

RuthW · 05/05/2021 21:48

Love it i would think everyone would know how to pronounce it. Ari for short.

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/05/2021 21:43

@TheGirlWhoLived yes , Arietty , another lovely name

ALevelhelp · 05/05/2021 21:34

One of my all time favourite names!

I also like Oriana

TheGirlWhoLived · 05/05/2021 21:33

Nah the borrower is arietty. Still pretty though!

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 05/05/2021 21:32

Love it. Makes me think of Ariadne Oliver.

Doilooklikeatourist · 05/05/2021 21:32

I like Ariadne , wasn’t she in The Borrowers ?
Nickname ..
Andi
Addie
Neenah ?

YorkiePanda · 05/05/2021 21:31

I prefer the French version, Arianne

inmyslippers · 05/05/2021 21:29

I love it, I'm a die hard Greek mythology fan

idontlikealdi · 05/05/2021 21:29

I love it but it will be shortened the one I know goes by Ari.

biscuitcat · 05/05/2021 21:28

You could be me! Expecting baby at the moment, it's one of my most adored names, but we also have a double barrelled surname and I don't know if it's just giving a child rather a lot to live up to.

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 05/05/2021 21:26

It’s pronounced differently in English and Greek. In case that matters (it has more of a ‘th’ sound in Greek instead of a ‘d’ sound).

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/05/2021 21:25

That wouldn't bother me though, my Dd is Niamh, so used to having to pronounce/spell it, and she's 19.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/05/2021 21:22

I absolutely love it.
You may have a problem with people not being sure how to pronounce it though.

CaviarAndCigarettes · 05/05/2021 21:20

I'm struggling to pronounce it and have never heard or if before. It looks very pretty though
