Help a sister out! Could you give me feedback or reorder in order of preference. What do you think of the names, do you know any LGs with these names, are they popular, are there any strange associations I should know about etc etc. Basically I'd just be interested to get a mix of feedback and opinions.

Thank you.

Rosalind
Sylvia
Lucia
Eleanor

Happycat1212 · 06/05/2021 21:23

My mums friend is called Sylvia, I have always loved the name

partyatthepalace · 06/05/2021 20:27

Sylvia - and it’s lovely, and not overused

Eleanor is great but SO many of them and other EL names
Rosalind is OK but will get Rosie and so many of them
Lucie is a bit babyish, but anyway better spelt Lucy

ImInStealthMode · 06/05/2021 19:18

Sylvia is one of my favourites after a treasured family member. Also like Lucy.

Eleanor and Rosalind not so keen.

Chitaufree · 06/05/2021 19:16

Eleanor

MercyBodle · 06/05/2021 07:14
  1. Eleanor
  2. Lucie (pretty spelling - I think either spelling is fine)
  1. Sylvia (not keen, but Sylvie is gorgeous)
  2. Rosalind (Rosalinds and Roslyns are everywhere around me, aged in their 70s and all called Roz. Roz, Bev and Lorraine are great friends.)
TempsPerdu · 05/05/2021 23:21

Good list OP. My order (with pros and cons) would be:

Sylvia - love this. Great associations (Plath/Pankhurst), lovely meaning, ‘silvery’ sound and definitely due a resurgence. Only drawback is I think it’s currently at that tipping point where some people think ‘gorgeous’ and others just think ‘old lady’.

Rosalind - has really grown on me lately. Strong, elegant, Shakespearean, Franklin etc. Downside is the nickname Roz, which seems quite difficult to avoid.

Eleanor - great pedigree with dignified, regal feel. Lots of good namesakes and nicknames (would avoid Ellie and plump for Nell/Leni/Nora). Does somehow seem a bit fusty and buttoned up though - quite a formal, ‘proper-sounding’ image.

Lucie - much prefer Lucy spelling as less fussy. Good all-round classic, pretty, Lucy from Narnia etc. But it’s been popular for a long time and can feel a bit bland/wet/insipid to me. I’d personally go for something stronger-sounding.

Sylvia is on my list for a potential (but unlikely!) second DD so would definitely be my pick.

MooseMoose · 05/05/2021 20:20

In order -

Sylvia - I love this, sounds sparkly and reminds me of Sylvia Pankhurst, a great role model. I know one little Sylvia and she's gorgeous, plus a relative of DH, in her 60s - nice, intelligent woman. Still think it's pretty uncommon though.
Lucie - A classic. Reminds me of Narnia. Would have to be spelt Lucy though. Really like it. More popular, I know a handful, different ages.
Eleanor - pretty. I know one who is around 6 and another, bit younger, called Eleanora, which is also lovely. Quite like Nell / Nora as possible nn.
Rosalind - it's ok. I love Rosalie and Rosa. Rose is also classic. Rosalind sounds a little harsh to my ears, and will probably get shortened to Roz. Don't know any.

pilates · 05/05/2021 18:58

Eleanor (dislike Ellie)
Lucy (spelt like this)
Rosalind
Sylvia (prefer Sylvie)

Ellmau · 05/05/2021 18:54

Rosalind is one of my very favourite names - elegant, beautiful and strong.

Sylvia feels a bit dated to me.

Lucy/Lucie is pretty but I imagine someone without a very strong personality.

Eleanor is OK but a bit plain.

AuntieStella · 05/05/2021 18:44

I like all these names

Sylvia - I prefer Sylvie, but either is fine
Eleanor - lovely, but there are an awful lot of Ellies, do you mind that?
Lucie - lovely, and I like this spelling (French, isn't it?)
Rosalind - lovely and my favourite of these 4

JemimaJoy · 05/05/2021 18:21
  1. Sylvia
  2. Lucy
  3. Eleanor
  4. Rosalind
lucie82 · 05/05/2021 17:47

I obviously like Lucie! My name on my birth certificate is Lucy but I changed it when I was 12 so it stood out more

bridgetreilly · 05/05/2021 17:36

Eleanor and Lucie or Lucy are both moderately popular. I think Sylvie is creeping up the ranks but Sylvia less so.

Rosalind is an excellent choice. Rosalind Sylvia would be lovely.

VWcamperT5 · 05/05/2021 16:20

We have an Eleanor nn Nelly
Lucy was on our list but knew too many already.

Zarinea · 05/05/2021 16:15

Rosalind. Gorgeous.

Twinkie01 · 05/05/2021 16:13

Rosalind and Sylvia are old lady names for me.

Lucy (this spelling)
Eleanor

Fifthtimelucky · 05/05/2021 15:17

I love all of them, probably in this order: Eleanor, Sylvia, Rosalind and Lucy. The first three all have a similar sound - three syllables with the stress on the first - that I really like.

Although Eleanor is my favourite, I agree that there are too many Ellies around at the moment. It reminds me of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Eleanor Rigby.

I prefer Lucy to Lucie. I think it's a lovely name for children and great aunts, but somehow doesn't seem right for young adults (even though I have known several).

I like Rosalind, and know three of them, all now young adults. One is always known as Rosalind, one is Rosie and one is Ros. It reminds me of Shakespeare and the one in my family. Personally I prefer Rosamund.

I love the sound and meaning of Sylvia. It reminds me of Pankhurst and Plath, 'Who is Sylvia' in Shakespeare, set to music by Schubert (and others) and 'Sylvia's Mother' by Dr Hook.

MintyCedric · 05/05/2021 14:48

Sylvia (or Sylvie) is lovely
Lucie...can't help but feel it's a little boring but nice enough and I quite like the ie spelling (and know someone who spells it this way)
Rosalind - at some point it will probably get hacked down to Rosie or Ros...both of which would drive me up the wall
Eleanor - pretty, classic. We considered it for DDs middle name but a colleague at the time who was also pregnant (didn't know it was one of our possibles) had a step daughter with that name and said it conjured up a maiden aunt kind of character. 16 years on I've never forgotten that assessment (and we chose something else for our DD!)

Mumoblue · 05/05/2021 14:40

As a Lucy myself I can tell you in 30 years I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve been asked if it was with an I-E. If you choose this name, I’d spell it with a Y or she’ll forever be saying “Lucie with an I-E”.

Personally I love Rosalind!

logoffbarry · 05/05/2021 14:36

I've found that often the people who find Lucie wet or Ellie insipid go on to raise spineless, anaemic, spoon-fed little poppets. There are plenty of classically named, graceless twits out in the world with poor manners and a stunning sense of entitlement.

My fave from your list is Rosalind because it's my own but I like all from your list and also like the French and Czech spelling of Lucie.

MayIDestroyYou · 05/05/2021 14:33

Sylvia and Rosalind are sisters, diametrically opposite in personality.

Sylvia, the elder: spiky red-haired sharp tongued wit, with hidden vulnerabilities. Red lipstick, wouldn't be seen dead in trainers. In novels she'd be the invaluable PA to a CEO. Not interested in marriage, a quite spectacularly brilliant aunt - whisking small children off to highly unsuitable theatrical events and lunch at Claridges. Lives in a tiny, treasure-filled flat, spends five times what she earns, ridiculously generous. A diamond.

Rosalind ... Rounder and quietly pretty. A reputation for domesticity without any evidence to back this up. Calm. Reliable. Remembers people's names and gets them to do the talking. Eventually writes a devastating novel under a pseudonym. Spends a lifetime in unrequited love with a married someone. Everyone she knows will say she's the person who has had the most influence on the direction of their lives.

Lucie - talented, surprisingly air-headed artist. Very well to do, pleads poverty, has never spent a weekend in Town in her entire life. Genuinely believes her success is down to aesthetic discernment, rather than being able to invite eager patrons to her family estate to talk about her work.

Eleanor: the clever but impecunious friend to whom the others are all scrupulously kind.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/05/2021 14:32

Gosh this is actually really difficult as I love 3 of these a lot (only one I dislike is Lucie which I find too sweet/cutesy even as classic Lucy and will also be misspelt).

  1. Sylvia - lovely sound, is on the rise but it's not there yet - so she is fairly likely to be the only one in her peer group (at the moment- I think in 10 - 20 years Sylvia could make top 100). Nice nn in Sylvie and cool namesakes in Pankhurst and Plath.

  2. Eleanor - has become a classic, lots of history and cool namesakes in Aquitaine and Roosevelt and lots of nn choice (I love Nell but there's also Elle/Ellie/Ella/Leni/Nora). Only reason I've put it second is it's current popularity (along with Ellie/Ella/Elena...).You could consider less well used (Shakespearean) Helena instead?

  3. Rosalind - elegant Shakespearean loveliness, also with an impressive namesake in scientist Franklin. But just like with Rosamund, I'm personally not keen on the nn Roz (which is very likely), so I've put it last for that reason.

logoffbarry · 05/05/2021 14:31

Sure Syvlia is a real name? Any relation to sieve?

timeaftert1me · 05/05/2021 14:21

Lucie is sickly and common, Lucy is classic. Ellie, as someone else mentioned, along with Elle, Ella is insipid. Syvlia and Rosalind are real names.
