Thanksgiving? It is too much?

Hiya, I’ve name changed here as I’m giving my child’s name so just using this username for this thread.
I’m due baby girl in a few days, (Dd3) and my DH and I are trying to pick a name.

We are really looking for a virtue name - we have Dd1 who is Honour, and we also had dd2 who sadly was born sleeping, due to lots of complications in pregnancy, who we also gave a virtue name.

We are looking for a name that marks the joy of having another girl after our loss and for what has been thankfully a good pregnancy.

We can’t use Joy though as a baby in our very close friendship circle has just been name Joy. Also can’t use Grace for a similar reason.

We are thinking ‘Thanksgiving’, as this conveys thankfulness and a sense of giving back for our blessing. DH loves it and wants it to be a done deal but I am thinking - it’s quite a mouthful and a big name to give to a little girl, what if it’s too much? And what would we shorten Thanksgiving to?

Can I have your thoughts on Thanksgiving, or if you think it’s too much, do you have any other suggestions?

We are Christians if that gives any context.

Many Black cultures use these types of words as names and so I think it is culturally appropriate and would not raise too many eyebrows.
If you like it, then use it. I feel a lot of replies on here are coming from a very white viewpoint and could be considered to be bordering on racist, to be honest

This. Those saying she will be ridiculed are obviously from a white non diverse background.

Names like this are entirely normal in some cultures. Not everyone is white british Hmm, or expects everyone else in this country to conform to white british norms.

Kitkat151 · 01/05/2021 16:06

I pit your poor daughter if you call her that..,.she will be ridiculed in school

^This.

I love Favour. Also Blessing. I am biased on Comfort as one of my best friends is Comfort and she just lives her name! Beautiful choice.

Also have one friend named Trouble - nicest man you can imagine and he is soooo good to his mama after the traumatic birth that gave him the name. Smile

I'm not usually a fan of virtue names as being named, say, Joy and then being clinically depressed or Grace and being hopelessly clumsy is not fun. But something that speaks to your parents' joy at having you - that's always lovely.

Allthingspeaches · 01/05/2021 15:48

What about Favour?

PattyPan · 01/05/2021 15:47

I think there are words that are used as names in black cultures that might seem unusual to white ears but are fine (eg Precious, Blessing, I used to work with a Monday) and there are names that would just be really annoying to have - and Thanksgiving is in the latter camp. Mostly because it is long so would definitely be shortened, and there isn’t anything obvious to shorten it to other than ‘Thanks’. It would be really annoying if every time someone said thanks you thought they were asking for you!

Definitely a narrow view of what is an acceptable name on this thread.
Hosannasmum · 01/05/2021 15:01

I love unusual names, so would love to meet a Thanksgiving :)

There are lots of other lovely names suggested here too though.

I have a Hosanna, who was born after we were told we'd not have children. Not everyone loves her name, but it generally gets an ok reception, and often we find that people have met at least one other Hosanna, so it's not TOTALLY unusual.

Good luck with your name hunt :)

Cardboardeaux · 01/05/2021 14:44

Or Felicity as a pp suggested - comes from the Latin for "happiness" but also "good fortune"

Cardboardeaux · 01/05/2021 14:43

How about Esperanza (means hope) or Iris (goddess of the rainbow)?

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 01/05/2021 14:34

Thanksgiving would be an absolute millstone of a name with so many people going 'what? like the American holiday?'

Amity (friendship) or Felicity are nice virtue names.

And I like the idea of choosing a name that's not a virtue name but means joy/happiness such as

Farrah
Naomi
Allegra (love this one)

Good luck!

imgoinginsaneinthemembrane · 01/05/2021 14:26

What about

Love
Dawn
Destiny
Merry

Sexnotgender · 01/05/2021 14:23

@JurassicShay

Thanksgiving is a bit much and doesn't shorten well. I love Mercy & Patience.

I have a DD called Sunday, that could work. It's not a virtue name but is the day of rest.

I love Sunday as a name! I used to play a sport with a girl called Sunday.
Sexnotgender · 01/05/2021 14:22

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Thanksgiving really doesn’t work as a name unfortunately. I agree that Blessing might be a better alternative.

I’ve just had a baby girl and called her Joy. We’ve had so many compliments on her name.

Jewelsbelvi · 01/05/2021 14:14

What about
Beholden
Gracia
Asante
Aissa (thankful)
Evangeline

PiratePetespajamas · 01/05/2021 14:12

What about Raffaella? “Raphael” means “God heals” in Hebrew, so would be a tribute both to your faith and to your experience of loss with your second daughter (I’m so sorry).

Thanksgiving is too Puritan. Like old-school Puritan. It’s sort of like “Endeavour” (of Morse fame), except I think even more cumbersome. While it can be really fun to have a very unusual name, even one that’s not usually a name, I think this is too much - it’s long and difficult/impossible to abbreviate. I don’t think your daughter would thank you.

bluebluezoo · 01/05/2021 14:05

we are not of South African heritage, I’m of Caribbean heritage and DH British

I was going to ask if you have any african/caribbean heritage, as virtue names are not unusual.

If you are black or mixed race, particularly if you live somewhere multicultural like SE London, i don’t think Thanksgiving would stand out- the people saying you are ridiculous I’m willing to bet are white.

I like Patience too. As some have said Thanksgiving is a mouthful and not easily shortened?

chesterelly · 01/05/2021 14:00

Love blessing and Faith. I know a little girl called Trinity who is lovely. Trinity would give a nod to her being your third child as well.

SomeCatsLikeCheese · 01/05/2021 13:57

I think Faith is beautiful but Felicity is one of my all time favourites and is linked to happiness, so would seem very appropriate for a rainbow baby. Sorry for your loss and congratulations on your pregnancy.Flowers

MrsFin · 01/05/2021 13:46

TBH, I think three virtue names of one family (all girls) is a bit much, albeit one DD passed away.

Ellenthegenerous · 01/05/2021 13:39

I think Thanksgiving as a name for a child is setting them up for some very unkind comments as they grow up. Blessing is a lovely name as are much of the other suggestions up thread.

Temp023 · 01/05/2021 13:33

Felicity!

ThatIsMyPotato · 01/05/2021 13:21

I'm sorry you are getting people be rude and asking if it's a joke. As PP have said it will be a bit much if someone says Thank you Thanksgiving. And I can only see it shortened to Thanks which will make it more confusing.

Mammymar · 01/05/2021 13:16

What about Ever
