Thanksgiving? It is too much?

Hiya, I’ve name changed here as I’m giving my child’s name so just using this username for this thread.
I’m due baby girl in a few days, (Dd3) and my DH and I are trying to pick a name.

We are really looking for a virtue name - we have Dd1 who is Honour, and we also had dd2 who sadly was born sleeping, due to lots of complications in pregnancy, who we also gave a virtue name.

We are looking for a name that marks the joy of having another girl after our loss and for what has been thankfully a good pregnancy.

We can’t use Joy though as a baby in our very close friendship circle has just been name Joy. Also can’t use Grace for a similar reason.

We are thinking ‘Thanksgiving’, as this conveys thankfulness and a sense of giving back for our blessing. DH loves it and wants it to be a done deal but I am thinking - it’s quite a mouthful and a big name to give to a little girl, what if it’s too much? And what would we shorten Thanksgiving to?

Can I have your thoughts on Thanksgiving, or if you think it’s too much, do you have any other suggestions?

We are Christians if that gives any context.

What about Loveday or Hope

bluebluezoo · 01/05/2021 18:38

Ooh I like TG or Tigi as a nickname- wasn’t so sure at first but that would make it useable :).

user1493494961 · 01/05/2021 18:34

I'm sorry for your loss but you really can't call a child Thanksgiving.

KindnessCrusader · 01/05/2021 18:31

@PeskyRooksRGT now I'm starting to like it Grin

nancywhisky · 01/05/2021 18:17

Hosannah is very pretty and lovely as a name. I met one, and never forgotten her!

PeskyRooksRGT · 01/05/2021 18:14

I've got an ancestor who was named Christmas I don't know if he was merry though I hope so

Maggiesfarm · 01/05/2021 18:14

I think it is a bit much. Constance, Verity, Felicity are lovely, meaningful names for girls.

KindnessCrusader · 01/05/2021 18:02

I can see why you like it but I think it's a bit like calling a child 'Christmas' or some other festival. Have you considered the name Blessing? Praise?

TSSDNCOP · 01/05/2021 17:55

I think you have to imagine yourself bellowing it across the playground when she's doing something naughty.

Her middle names could be Black Friday as that always follows straight after ThanksgivingWink

MimiDaisy11 · 01/05/2021 17:43

Sorry for your loss OP.
I like some virtue names but in my opinion I think there are some better names than Thanksgiving that people have suggested on this thread, but if you like that go for it.
I do wonder though since it's quite long if people will shorten it and create a nickname.

MimiDaisy11 · 01/05/2021 17:37

Saying someone could be teased for a name is not the same as saying you approve of them being teased. I don't see how pointing out a potential problem makes a person ill-mannered or lacking in respect. I'm not saying that'll be the case and hope it wouldn't be. Just that people on the thread have a strange way of interpreting what others are actually saying.

Also, obviously, everyone is giving their point of view from their own culture and upbringing. Like most people do for everything. I met a Finnish man called Lassi which I'm sure is a fine name in Finland, but if you asked a Scottish person what they thought of calling a boy that they'd say it's not a good idea. Neither is objectively right or wrong though sometimes you might want to see how people interpret the name where the child will grow up. Or maybe that's not important to you.

YawnyOwl · 01/05/2021 17:33

Blessing is an amazing name OP!!!!

SuperbOwls · 01/05/2021 17:32

My eldest goes to school with a little girl called Blessing. I think it's lovely, her name is exactly what she is Smile

TattyDevine · 01/05/2021 17:32

Or Tigi

TattyDevine · 01/05/2021 17:30

She could be TG.

So there's a kid my eldest went to school with called SJ.

Then people can ask and she could say what it means.

PattyPan · 01/05/2021 17:25

Reading Ta made me think you could shorten it to Tag or Taggie if you did go for it which made me warm to it a little bit.

AsanteSana · 01/05/2021 17:21

I am appalled that so many think that a child would be teased, mocked or bullied for having an unusual name which may possibly reflect their cultural or family heritage. But perhaps I am just old fashioned and come from an era when respect, consideration, humility and manners were the norm.

For what it is worth my username means "thank you very much" in Kiswahili and, although I am not myself of African heritage, my wife is, as are my inlaws, many of whom have similar names. I would be disgusted by anyone who made fun of or questioned their carefully chosen and meaningful names.

nicknamehelp · 01/05/2021 16:57

You've asked people not to joke about this name but I seriously think if you give it to her she will have a lifetime of people making ajoke of her name and having to explain it. Also what would it get shortened too Ta or Thanks? Sorry for your loss but it's no excuse to burden dc.with such a name when so many more to pick from.

TattyDevine · 01/05/2021 16:54

Translate it into another language

Like Icelandic - she can be þakkargjörðarhátíð

Ignore me, I'm on my 3rd limoncello spritzer 😆

Some good advice on here, congrats on your bundle and sorry for your loss 😍

AsanteSana · 01/05/2021 16:48

Well, I am probably a lone voice in the wilderness but I think it is rather nice! And, although I have not read the full thread, several posters have quite correctly pointed out that virtue names are popular in African countries and cultures. The largely white, Anglo demographic of MN is clearly showing through.

It is a lovely name, in my view, use it by all means and hang what anybody else thinks. If it has a special meaning to you, and you alone, after your sad loss, that is good enough reason.

thebestnamehere · 01/05/2021 16:46

@Cma1988

Thanks for all the replies. I did kind of expect the response to be honest as I had a feeling it would be too much as a name.

I’m going to show DH the responses as he is still set that it is a nice name because of the meaning.

Our precious dd2, is Hope, and we also can’t use Joy and Grace, but I’m going to have a think about the suggestions given, so thank you.

I love Blessing, Harmony and Felicity, and Faith

I also love Hannah, but we also wanted a virtue name to go with DD1 and DD2.

How about Hannukah if you like Hannah
tofuschnitzel · 01/05/2021 16:40

@MrsFin

TBH, I think three virtue names of one family (all girls) is a bit much, albeit one DD passed away.
I think your comment is uncalled for. Do you possess any tact?
katy1213 · 01/05/2021 16:39

Unless you're 17th Century Puritans/First Settlers, this is a terrible idea. Think of poor Inspector Morse and Endeavour!
And I always think it's a shame to saddle girls with virtue names - they sound so passive.

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 01/05/2021 16:27

Yes, opinions on this forum can be very Anglo-centric but I still think the OP can come up with a better name than Thanksgiving. More commonly used names like Blessing or Miracle are nice words in themselves, pleasant to say and hear, but Thanksgiving is just clunky. And that's before the whole American holiday association. Would be such a pain for her if she ever found herself working in the US.

ThatIsMyPotato · 01/05/2021 16:15

@Kitkat151

I pit your poor daughter if you call her that..,.she will be ridiculed in school
Then the school should pull up the bullys
