Welsh girls names you can pronounce

So having failed to agree on anything DH thinks something from his Welsh side would be nice. We don’t live in Wales though so I’m wanting to know what’s hot and what’s not in Wales and what can people pronounce. So far from the family connections we have

Sian - I like but heard old fashioned in Wales
Siriol
Ceridwen
Eirian (Ayrian)
Manon - I quite like this
Tesni
Eluned
Glesni - again quite like this
Tarian - may be a bit GOT

Any more?

@Piptastic what Blyatiful said Grin - I would have said eh-LEH-ri but her version is probably a closer match. I’m terrible at transcribing sounds, but the stress is in the penultimate syllable (I don’t speak Welsh but think that’s the standard stressed syllable for Welsh).

Blyatiful · 01/05/2021 10:44

I also know an Alys, who pronounces it AY-liss.

Blyatiful · 01/05/2021 10:43

Ell-AIRY

I used to work with a Llinos but no-one could pronounce her name.

Piptastic · 01/05/2021 10:10

@tywysoges how is it pronounced? Lovely looking name

DeeDimer · 01/05/2021 09:28

Non and Betsan. No pronunciation issues and both pretty.

Edenember · 01/05/2021 09:22

I love Betsan, but then if I think too much about it it sounds like an antiseptic cream.

tywysoges · 30/04/2021 23:56

Just had a quick look on DD’s class list Grin
Mali
Nia
Megan
Ffion

My personal favourite is Eleri but was put off by reading on a names board that it rhymes with celery (it doesn’t!).

Medi, Gwenno, Anest

sproutsandparsnips · 30/04/2021 23:00

Betsan
I would have had Angharad but had 2 boys!
Elin

SpottyOrange · 30/04/2021 22:22

I love Ffion, Tesni, Seren, Iola (but probably difficult to pronounce looking at it), Eleri

didireallysaythat · 30/04/2021 22:16

Eleri and Megan are "safe"

Pumpkinstace · 30/04/2021 22:09

I have a Carys.

I also have a Celyn.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 30/04/2021 22:09

Bronwen, Eluned, Elin, Mair, Mari, Olwyn, Teleri, Eirwen, Eira, Awen, Menai or Menna.

Marble2302 · 30/04/2021 22:01

I know an Efa and and Eira both of which I think are lovely.

I am not keen on Seren.

CaffiSaliMali · 30/04/2021 21:57

I'm in England, half Welsh. On my list are:

Alys (Alice)
Eira (EY-ra, ey as in hey, ra as in rabbit)
Mari (Marry)
Morwenna (MORR-wenna)
Tesni (TESS-nee)

www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2020/08/top-100-most-popular-names-in-england-and-wales-2019.html

If you scroll past the top 100 names for E&W combined you'll find the top 100 in Wales only.

Welsh names in that list include:
Mali
Ffion
Alys
Seren
Megan
Eira
Cadi
Lowri
Nia
Eleri
Elin
Efa
Gwen
Nansi

Trends seem similar to elsewhere in the UK in that shorter, vowel heavy names are popular.

fluffiphlox · 30/04/2021 21:51

RhIannon
Llinos
Seren
Arianwen
Eira
Eirwen
Bethan
Siân

splishsplashsploshsplishsplash · 30/04/2021 21:47

Ffion, lovely name

Motherofgingers · 30/04/2021 21:40

Olwen?

Blyatiful · 30/04/2021 21:38

Annes is nice.

BunnyRuddington · 30/04/2021 21:34

I was going to say Manon Smile

Sennedd · 30/04/2021 21:32

Delyth, Megan, Bethan, Catrin, Cerian, Rhiannon,

glassbrightly · 30/04/2021 21:30

I have one on the above list, but won't name as it's outing. If we had had another daughter it would have been Catrin

tinytemper66 · 30/04/2021 21:29

Siân is fab. Not old fashioned 😊

Aliceandthemarchhare · 30/04/2021 21:28

Eleri is probably the only welsh girls name I like, if I’m totally honest.

Runkle · 30/04/2021 21:27

Megan, Bronwyn, Gwyneth, Ffion, Anwen, Catrin, Gwen, Bethan, Dilys
