Should I change my baby’s name?

I’ve recently given birth to a baby (girl) and in my hormonal/ sleep deprived state rushed into making a decision on her name. We chose the name Quinn which I do like but I’m now unsure if it’s the right name for her. It doesn’t help when people keep thinking she is a little boy when I say her name. Her sister has a more girly/pretty name and I am now thinking we should have named her something similar. I know it can be changed up until shes 12 months but her old name will always be first on the birth certificate. Help!!!

And fwiw I don't love Quinn, I think it actually sounds more feminine than masculine, but it is a very marmite choice. Many folk love it though! So don't allow others' opinions to sway you here.

YoniAndGuy · 30/04/2021 16:03

Have you actually changed your mind and would rather yourself that she were called something else, and do you have another name you love and would like her to have?

If so, change it! A good way to do it would be just to add a first name in front, so the name isn't completely changed, and Quinn goes into second place.

romdowa · 30/04/2021 16:02

To me quinn is a surname not a first name. So it wouldn't be my choice for either gender but if you like it for your child then keep it. Doesnt really matter what other people think.

L0bstersLass · 30/04/2021 15:57

It's a lovely name. Don't let people thinking she's a boy put you off. People always seem to think that babies they don't know are boys.

It's a fab name.

ladycarlotta · 30/04/2021 15:56

Quinn is lovely! If it really doesn't feel right to you, then do change it, but it's got a lot of love on this thread. It would be sad for you to be second-guessing yourself for reasons that don't really matter.

WeatherwaxOn · 30/04/2021 15:42

@2bazookas

Why care what mistakes strangers make?

In a years time her hair or clothes can indicate girl, if that's important to you. When she's three and can talk , she'll tell people herself, I'm a girl.

Yes this.

When my DD was small, she was bald. People kept thinking she was a boy. When she was older she told people she wasn't.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 30/04/2021 15:42

I love the name Quinn, its very sassy, it would be on my list if it wasn't very close in sound to a friends name!

I've never heard of a boy being called Quinn either

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/04/2021 15:37

I think of the Eskimo in the Manfred Mann song 'The Mighty Quinn' but as that was recorded over 50 years ago in 1968 I don't expect many people will make that connection.

Bluntness100 · 30/04/2021 15:37

Honestly I’d change it, I’m sorry op, it’s too close to quim and thus huge potential for bullying, or she will go through her life with folks thinking she’s a quintuplet with lazy parents,

BrownEyedGirl80 · 30/04/2021 15:34

Lovely name id keep it

HarkAVagrant · 30/04/2021 15:33

I mean, people always say this on Mumsnet names threads.

HarkAVagrant · 30/04/2021 15:33

@megletthesecond

It's a bit close to quim tbh. Handwritten those two n's would look like a m. I'd change it.
People always say this, but I have never seen or heard the hordes of medieval speakers bandying the word quim about. I honestly don’t think “may come up in English literature” is a reason not to use what is a great name. John means toilet, and a/ is used to mean that a lot more often than quim is used nowadays and b/ is the actual word, doesn’t just sound like it. But nobody ever says don’t use John, it means toilet - or indeed, it means pimp.
ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 30/04/2021 15:32

I have to say Quinn is a surname in my world. When did it graduate to girls' name category? Is it a celeb thing?

Standrewsschool · 30/04/2021 15:32

Forget what other people think, do you likethe name, and do you want to keep her as Quinn?

I think it’s a lovely name, and would assume a girl.

ImprobablePuffin · 30/04/2021 15:31

Screw everyone else. Do you still like the name? If so keep it. I love the name, so much so when DS was born I named him Finn as it was the closest boys name and Quinn is definitely for girls in my opinion

WhateverHappenedToFayWray · 30/04/2021 15:30

I think Quinn is a lovely name.

GlitterBicuits · 30/04/2021 15:26

I'd assume a boy.
And American.
Does she have a middle name you could change the order of?

But you should on,y change the name if you really have gone off it.

Thats the other reason I’d change it - Quim/Quinny being slang for vagina and could come up at school in English Lit.
StevieNix · 30/04/2021 15:24

I think it’s cute! I would definitely think girl! You obviously chose it because you liked it so I would keep it!

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 30/04/2021 15:22

Take a few weeks to think it over and if you still feel the same go ahead and change it. It happens more often than you'd think.

hullaballoo19 · 30/04/2021 15:21

I think Quinn is a lovely name 😊 but if you're not happy with it or don't think it suits her then change it

DinosaurDiana · 30/04/2021 15:20

I love the name Quinn for a girl.
I first heard it in a film called This is Where I Leave You. I think it’s really sassy for a girl.

elp30 · 30/04/2021 15:19

The first time I ever heard the name Quinn was
when the actress, Quinn Cummings, won an Oscar in 1977, aged 10.

I've heard it since and they've always been held by women.

megletthesecond · 30/04/2021 15:13

I'd change it.

bubblebath62636 · 30/04/2021 15:13

Dd has a girls name, she also had a pink pram, people still asked if she was a boy!

Stick with it op, it's lovely!
