I like the name Dahlia, which is pronounced dah-lee-a. I'm not sure what your pronunciation is about and agree you've made it a lot more patronising than was necessary.

PolarnOPirate · 25/04/2021 20:00

As to what sort of gal I picture... dark haired skipping around school playground in a summer dress, is what sprang to mind 🤷🏻‍♀️

NannyR · 25/04/2021 19:59

It's ok - I thought it was pronounced with three syllables day-li-a, rather than two, dal-ya.

Marcipex · 25/04/2021 19:57

I think it’s lovely but don’t understand your pronunciation guide.
I like Day leeya and Dar leeya but I would expect 3 syllables, not 2.

PolarnOPirate · 25/04/2021 19:56

There is no way I’d go for the pronunciation you specified there on my first try, I would be a toss up between

Dah-lia
and
Day-lia

For me. I would definitely have to be told it’s Dalya.

But I would only need to be told once, it’s not hard.

I love Blythe and it would probably be our daughter’s middle name.

I like Dah-lia but pronunciation issues would put me off.

wanderedlonelyasacloud · 25/04/2021 19:56

I like the name dahlia but have only heard it pronounced as day-lee-ah or daah-lee-ah depending on whether the person is english or American

TatianaBis · 25/04/2021 19:55
  1. If you want a as in bat you need Dallia.
  1. Blythe is much nicer name, so I’d have it the first name.
CliffsofMohair · 25/04/2021 19:54

I hear Blythe I think Gilbert. I like Dahlia Blythe though.

partyatthepalace · 25/04/2021 19:54

It’s a long a - Daah-li-a as far as I have ever heard it - if you want a short a you might get a lot of mispronunciations.

Dahlia is ok. I like Blythe better. I don’t think the combo works - maybe it’s the 2 long first syllables together.

8dpwoah · 25/04/2021 19:54

Nice enough name but YABU for being patronising. Maybe pick something more mainstream if you're going to bring your DD to be the same, people won't be expecting it as much as they would from a more 'unusual' name such as your choice.

KirstenBlest · 25/04/2021 19:53

Rating wise, a 4. It's not awful but Delia is nicer. Blythe as a middle name is a bit of a 1-syllable filler name but at least it's not Rose, May, Grace or Joy.

The combination seems slightly try-hard but Dahlia Surname might be ok.

KirstenBlest · 25/04/2021 19:51

Your pronunciation guide is a bit bizarre.

Dahlia can be Dale-ya or Dahl-ya. I doubt anyone else would use a short a.

Blythe makes me think of Blyth, which isn't great.
