Siblings sharing a middle name?

We decided on a name and like the same middle name as our first born has which is my great grandfather's name: Theodore.

I am not sure what's the protocol.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think it's a bit odd. A friend used the middle name of DS1 as the first name for DS2. Surely, from the millions of names available, they could have chosen a different name! Just seems lazy and not special for DS2.

pigglepot · 21/04/2021 20:52

I think it's different if it's a maiden name or the surname of one of the parents but it's weird if it's just a name (like Theodore). Isn't there another name you like that has a similar style? Stanley? Arthur?

OhTheTastyNuts · 21/04/2021 20:45

My sons both have my maiden name as their middle name. No issues!

DinosaurDiana · 21/04/2021 20:43

My DD’s both have my mum’s name as a middle name.

Frogsonglue · 21/04/2021 20:41

My children both have the same middle name, but it's their dad's surname (they have mine). It is a common first name though, but we never gave it a second thought. Maybe people think it's weird, I don't know.

I chose Thomas for my little boys middle name (assuming we would only have one child due to fertility treatment)

Then surprise baby DS #2 came along and I really wanted to call him Thomas as a first name.

I didn't though, it was too weir

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 21/04/2021 20:28

I know 4 siblings, both sexes, who have the same middle name.

YellowTwinklyStar · 21/04/2021 20:25

That is a bit weird unless it was his mum's name I guess? But there are loads of babies with Rose as a middle name I wouldn't be surprised if it happens quite often.

2306IRW · 21/04/2021 20:18

My DD's middle name is Rose. Her dad and I split when she was 6 months, he had another daughter last year and her middle name is Rose. So my daughter and her (half) sister have the same middle name and surname. I find it really wierd 🙈🙈

YellowTwinklyStar · 21/04/2021 20:18

I think if it's a relative the parents were close to then it's ok but if not the link starts to get a bit tenuous.

YellowTwinklyStar · 21/04/2021 20:16

I've seen it once but it was their deceased grandfather's name and he had died tragically young. One of them had to have it explained to them that siblings didn't automatically get the same middle name so I don't think it had been explained to them!

rainbowthoughts · 21/04/2021 19:36

Tbh I think it's weird that out of several million names you can't choose a different name for your second child. It makes little difference as hardly anybody nobody uses a middle name anyway, but from your child's POV it may seem like you simply didn't bother

Swifey40 · 21/04/2021 19:34

So are you saying that you have a ds already called (for example)
William Theodore
And you are going to have another ds called (for example)
Oliver Theodore?????
Because if that's the case, then yes it's very weird, and no you shouldn't do it!

IHateCoronavirus · 21/04/2021 19:33

If you like it go for it.
A word of caution though. I have two sons born close together. They get on like the best of friends however, the second hates anything which he shares/has shared with his brother. He likes to be seen as a very separate entity, despite their close relationship.
