Siblings sharing a middle name?

We decided on a name and like the same middle name as our first born has which is my great grandfather's name: Theodore.

I am not sure what's the protocol.

[quote pigglepot]@sundowners lol this is such a weird sweeping generalisation about people you literally know nothing about 😂

I honestly don't know why people think it is weird though.

OP you'll get really odd anal people on here who are by the far the absolute minority in society who obsess over middle names when the vast majority of people realise they are highly insignificant, are barely ever heard, are quickly forgotten even when announced and do not matter in the slightest! So please, reuse it.

Anyone who has an issue with it on here is highly unlikely to in reality be the type of person you'd probably hang around anyway.

I was going to say yes then I remembered my DD went through a phase when she was in Reception (now year 2) where she insisted that her full name including middle name and surname be used, it lasted about 8 weeks if I remember, she even insisted her teacher at school use it, so just be aware it could get confusing.

notalwaysalondoner · 22/04/2021 17:13

I think it's fine if you want to use the first child's middle name as the second child's first name e.g. William George and the second child becomes George Oliver.

But to have a William George and a Oliver George - what's the point? Is it just you think they sound nice as names together? Surely you can find something else similar? Is it that you really want to honour your deceased relative? In which case I guess go for it, but it's not normally how it works - naming one child after them is generally seen as plenty sufficient honouring in western culture.

All the women on one side of my family have the same middle name, it's like a family tradition. I'm going to give the same middle name to my daughter when she's born and any future daughters. I don't see what's wrong with it.

bridgetreilly · 22/04/2021 15:25

It's certainly unusual, but it's not really a problem, if that's what you want to do.

RuthW · 22/04/2021 15:23

Yes it's perfectly fine.

cheesebubble · 22/04/2021 14:31

All valid points, thank you! It just came to my mind and I wasn't sure if it's weird, unusual etc.

I think nothing of it. All the boys in my husband's family have the same middle name by tradition.

Notaroadrunner · 21/04/2021 21:58

Yes it's fine to use twice, or for any more kids you may have, as is the case in our family Smile

sunshineandshowers21 · 21/04/2021 21:53

both my boys have my brother’s name as their middle name. as do both my nephews, so all four of my parent’s grandsons have the same middle name. i don’t think it’s weird at all. and how often are middle names used in everyday life anyway?

Larryslockdownlunch · 21/04/2021 21:53

My ex and his brother have the same middle name. It's not really an issue

MadameMinimes · 21/04/2021 21:51

One of my uncles has two children and the second has exactly the same names as the oldest just the other way around.

E.g. Daisy Helen and Helen Daisy, or Matthew Thomas and Thomas Matthew.

It’s always struck me as a bit odd but neither of my cousins seem to mind it. How often does anyone actually use their middle name? I think it’s fine if you like it.

LifeinPieces21 · 21/04/2021 21:46

@MrsMcTats

I think it's a bit odd. A friend used the middle name of DS1 as the first name for DS2. Surely, from the millions of names available, they could have chosen a different name! Just seems lazy and not special for DS2.
If it's a special name and means something then I think it is nice that siblings would share a middle name though.
IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/04/2021 21:44

Since it's a traditional family name already I think it's fine to re-use it -although are there no other Grandfathers/Great- Grandfather's names in your family you also like?

LemonRoses · 21/04/2021 21:38

All the boys in our wider family through all generations share a middle name. It’s not unusual at all.

LifeinPieces21 · 21/04/2021 21:36

I don't find it odd at all.

elp30 · 21/04/2021 21:34

My twin grandsons both have their father (my son's) first name as their middle name.

At first, I thought it was an oddball thing for my son to do but now, I don't mind it at all.

They're nearly five and are learning to write their full names and they look confused and amused when they see that they have two names (middle and last) exactly the same.

I say, go for it!

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 21/04/2021 21:21

I have the same middle name as my Mum. It was important to her and so it is to me. My daughters have 4 names, their second names are the same as each other, and me and my Mum. Their third names are very significant (and different) to each child.

In our family middle name/s are chosen for significance. I would hope that they might continue the tradition, or maybe maintain the significance but with a different choice of name. But if they don’t follow the tradition that would also be fine, their choice!

I like that middle names have a special significance and for a name to be shared by siblings wouldn’t bother me.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 21/04/2021 21:19

I actually really liked the idea for sisters particularly, if second DC was a girl ot was something I'd wanted to do, so even if they changed their surnames through marriage it would be a permanent connection. But I had a DS so we didn't do this.

Crosstrainer · 21/04/2021 21:12

I thought about it (family name) and didn’t in the end (chose a different family name, which, ironically but happily, the family member I’d been going to “honour” twice was actually more thrilled about). People basically said to me “it’s a bit odd, but middle names don’t get used all that often and especially not when talking about siblings together, so why not if you want to.”

footprintsintheslow · 21/04/2021 21:08

My three children have the same middle name

MixedUpFiles · 21/04/2021 21:07

My Dh’s family had a traditional middle name for boys. Since we gave dd my surname, we used that middle name for her middle name.

Firstbornunicorn · 21/04/2021 21:04

My mum and her 4 sisters all have the same middle name! I have it, too!
