Thoughts on Aimée/Amy

Hello,
DH and I have finally decided on a name for our little girl but can’t decide on the spelling. What are your thoughts on Aimée vs Amy?
We like the name as it is recognisable but not used very often these days!
Any thoughts on the name are welcome as well as similar suggestions :)

Yes, but not with the accent on. The accent changes the end sound from ee to ay.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/04/2021 00:41

My sister is Aimee pronounced the usual way Aim-ee. I was always jealous that she got the prettier name.

BikeRunSki · 20/04/2021 23:41

Although technically they are pronounced differently, I have never come across an Aimee who didn’t pronounce her name the same as Amy. Fair enough, this dies only amount to about 5 Aimees.

lemonsyellow · 20/04/2021 18:17

They are pronounced differently. You can’t just unilaterally “decide on the spelling”.

DanglingMod · 20/04/2021 18:15

They're pronounced differently.

Do you prefer Aymee (then spell it Amy)?

Or Ehmay (then spell it Aimee with the accent)?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/04/2021 18:11

Sorry that should say more than quadruple rather than more than double!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 20/04/2021 18:09

Unless you live in a French speaking country, I'd definitely use the classic Amy spelling. It will make her life easier not to always have to spell her name - and there are currently more than double the amount of Amy's than Aimee's being born in the UK according to statistics.

3CCC · 20/04/2021 18:03

I like Amie or Amy best

Vickee · 20/04/2021 17:51

Thanks for all your comments, glad everyone agrees it’s a lovely name....no we just need to decide on spelling!!

The accent it changes the pronunciation.

With no accent it's Aymee

fakeplantsdontlookreal · 20/04/2021 14:54

Amy, otherwise she will go through her entire life having to spell it out to everyone, like my friend's daughter has to. As there were two "Amy's" one was always known as "Amy IE".

ElizabethTudor · 20/04/2021 14:53

Amy

TwilightSkies · 20/04/2021 14:50

I have an Aimee. Just couldn’t be bothered with the accent! I love it, I think it’s pretty and feminine.

partyatthepalace · 20/04/2021 14:48

Amy

Partly because it will be easier, but also because it’s charm is its simplicity so I think a simple spelling works best.

BikeRunSki · 20/04/2021 14:46

@Amdone123, because why use 3 letters when 8 will do?! Smile

CaptainSpirit · 20/04/2021 12:27

My name is Aimee. I've spent my life spelling it out. 🙈 I don't particularly dislike it but I wish I'd always been Amy instead.

Every teacher I had during childhood would spell it wrong (inventing weird and wonderful new spellings, like Aimmee and Amiee) or would just go ahead and spell it Amy.

If you like the name then call your little one Amy, it's so much simpler. Smile

PattyPan · 20/04/2021 11:53

Unless you are French, Amy. Spelling your name out every time is annoying.

Checkingout811 · 20/04/2021 11:43

Definitely Amy

Edenember · 20/04/2021 11:41

I think Amy or Aimee without the accent.

YellowTwinklyStar · 20/04/2021 10:59

Amy

Amdone123 · 20/04/2021 10:51

@BikeRunSki, this made me laugh. You couldn't make it up ! I met a woman who'd named her daughter Tonii, for the same reason.
I'm like you, I remain unconvinced.

KirstenBlest · 20/04/2021 10:45

Which is useful of me. Try Alt + 0233
é

KirstenBlest · 20/04/2021 10:44

Accents are a PITA. You can use alt codes. Alt+0234 is ê.

Tal45 · 20/04/2021 10:41

I think the French way of spelling it is prettier but I'd drop the accent.

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/04/2021 10:39

I have a friend who was named Amy. She changed it by deed poll to Aimee (with an accent - pronounced the same way) as she preferred that spelling. Lovely name either way - she considers the newer spelling to be more current
