What are your thoughts on Agatha and Agnes. Maybe Aggie as a nn for either

Love them both, and Aggie (we had a cat called Aggie, named after my aunt).

AllTheNames · 20/04/2021 14:06

I have an Agatha who is an Aggie or an Ags. If she isn't paying attention she gets a sharp AGNES! to get her attention.

She came out an Agatha and I can't imagine her being anything different. I did trial a few other names when she was born but I think you know when their name is the right one!

CakesOfVersailles · 20/04/2021 13:58

I quite like both but I will admit I used to think Agnes was boring and plain as a name when I was a teenager.

I have a few women named Agnes in my family but they are/were almost universally known as Nancy, which is the traditional nickname for Agnes is you don't want to use Aggie.

Agatha puts me in mind of Agatha Christie.

Although at the moment both names remind me of Wandavision Grin

YoniAndGuy · 20/04/2021 12:31

Love both

DanglingMod · 19/04/2021 19:46

Love both, but the I'm really not a fan of vowel heavy/E/L heavy names for girls.

I love the G sound and othe hard vowels for girls and love Greta, Gretel, Odette, Dorothy, Maud, Audrey. All elegant and strong.

Crocidura · 19/04/2021 19:38

I love Agatha and if I had another baby girl, that would be her name.
Love Aggie, quite like Agnes.
I knew an Aggie whose full name was Adrienne btw.

MangosteenSoda · 19/04/2021 18:59

Ag names sound harsh in English.

With Agnes and Agatha the following syllable(s) are also blunt and dull sounding.

French pron of Agnes is nice as is the French pron of Agathe as a pp mentioned.

I think the Greek name Agathi is ok too because the stress is on the second ‘a’ and the Ag sound is less emphasised.

MrsPsmalls · 19/04/2021 18:55

Ada?

Phyllis321 · 19/04/2021 18:43

Wandavision!

MadeOfStarStuff · 19/04/2021 18:38

Not a fan of either but prefer Agatha to Agnes, I think the Agn makes it sound harsher

DungeonKeeper · 19/04/2021 18:17

Awful ugly names. Aggie as a nn is terrible.

LeopardSheet · 19/04/2021 17:14

I think they sound nice if you’re Scandinavian (also like agnetha) but otherwise no

Ellasmummyx1 · 19/04/2021 12:53

Dreadful sorry! Really frumpy, matronly names

annacondom · 19/04/2021 12:51

There is a time when I would've hated both of these but now I think they're so unusual that they have no negative connotations and I like them both. I came on here to suggest the French pronunciations, but that might sound a bit pretentious, I suppose. I had an Aunt Aggie, who was lovely, and I found out recently that her name was Charlotte Agnes, but she chose to be known as Aggie! (I would've gone for Lottie:))

ILoveStickers · 19/04/2021 12:44

I want to like them, but can't quite.

I met a baby Agnes last year, though, and it was a cute name on her.

I also met a French Agathe once, and it sounds so much cooler! Or Agata (Italian??)

TatianaBis · 19/04/2021 12:11

Loathe Agatha. But Agnes is fine. Prefer French pronunciation.

partyatthepalace · 18/04/2021 16:15

Love them both

Ellmau · 15/04/2021 22:44

They both have quite a harsh sound to me.

MyLifeNow20 · 15/04/2021 21:47

Love both and Aggie!

stellarfox · 15/04/2021 21:36

I’m not a fan. My partner did suggest Agatha when our daughter was born so he likes it. I find them a bit heavy/clunky. I do think Aggie is sweet though

GreyhoundG1rl · 15/04/2021 21:02

@PrincessesRUs

I love the french pronunciation of Agnes which is like Annyess
Much nicer.
PrincessesRUs · 15/04/2021 21:01

I love the french pronunciation of Agnes which is like Annyess

Dauphinois · 15/04/2021 16:40

@GrimDamnFanjo

Taggie? The woman who tamed Rupert Campbell Black!
I was about to say this! Jilly Cooper shortened Agatha to Taggie, which is lovely I think.
GrimDamnFanjo · 15/04/2021 16:36

bridgetreilly · 15/04/2021 16:34

I really like both of them.

Annis is a very pretty corruption of Agnes if you want something a little softer.
