Name to go with Francis/Frances (mn)

I would like to use Frances or Francis (for a boy) as a middle name for our baby. It’s in honour of a relative. Suggestions for first names to go with it? Should be international names, not start with A or M, not be from Royal family (no Edward, James, Charles, Elizabeth etc) or bible.
Surname is English. Any suggestions?

How strict is the 'nothing biblical' rule? Does it rule out Isabel and Isabella as variants of Elizabeth and Jack as a variant of John for example?

James Francis would be lovely but is biblical.

Patrick, Edmund, Oliver, Max, Magnus, Alistair, Laurence, Walter, Fabian, Robert?

Eleanor Frances is lovely, but as a PP pointed out - Eleanor of Aquitaine was a former queen consort of England in the 1100s. There was also the Eleanor (of Castille?) the queen consort for whom the Eleanor crosses were made.

How about Clarissa, Juliet, Sabrina, Seraphina, Georgina, Margot, Verity, Laura? Or a rose name - Rosanna, Rosalind, Rosamund, Rosemary?

My grandmother's father was called Francis.
Her brothers were Frances (Frankie) and John; her sister was Evelyn Helena. Her mother Eleanor.

TatianaBis · 09/04/2021 13:20

Eleanor is a royal name - Eleanor of Aquitaine.

TatianaBis · 09/04/2021 13:20

up to him ^^

TatianaBis · 09/04/2021 13:20

Given that your DH has ruled out so many (biblical) names, surely it's up to find suitable shortlists?

Ticktockclick · 09/04/2021 06:37

Oops I put William and forgot it's a royal name Blush It's my dad's name and husband's middle name, so I thought of them, not Wills 🙈

Ruth Frances for a girl.

Adam Francis for a boy.

Rory Francis

Because my boys suggestions did not meet your criteria at all, would surname type names be ok?

Taylor Francis
Hunter Francis
Archer Francis (Archie)
Tyler Francis
Robert Francis (Bobbie)

Helena, Louisa and Sophie are all names from European royalty but do sound nice with Frances.

Mila, Mia, Bianca or Emma might work.

Henry Francis
Leopold Francis
Maximilian Francis
Nicholas Francis

(I think these are all European royalty and/or popes but again seem nice)

Jean-Luc, (I love that name) then change the Francis to Francois.
You're welcome 😉

steppemum · 08/04/2021 21:06

Eleanor Frances is beautiful.
It sounds fine for International context as Elena is universal, but Eleanor is much nicer spelling.

Elliot Francis sounds great for a boy

Nicholas

These all have royal connections though. How obvious does it have to be or is your DH against any name ever used by anyone with royal blood?

I quite like Julian Francis.

Francis is DH's middle names and his first name is Gary so, Gary? Grin

DragonPoop · 08/04/2021 20:14

I love Frances for a girl, why not use that as a first name and I think it sounds good paired with something quite short and strong.
Eg:
Frances Quinn
Frances Wren

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/04/2021 20:05

Forgot Cecilia and Viola, both fairly well used in Europe.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/04/2021 20:04

Wow that is a long list of don't's, it's understandable why you are struggling! (biblical avoidance is especially difficult for international boys names- the most well used ones often tend to be Biblical: Samuel, Michael, Matthew, Adam etc).

You could go Roman style - Lucas or Felix (or maybe Rufus, not sure how international that is). Or classic Latinate - Benedict, Dominic or Laurence. Or maybe Greek origins - Theodore, Sebastian or Christopher? (even Nicholas is apparently briefly mentioned in the Bible!). Classic English names like Hugh, Wilfred, Edgar, Edmund etc don't tend to be very international.

Girls - Helena/Elena, Louisa, Lara, Laura, Olivia, Emilia, Sophia, Emma, Julia/Juliet (Julia briefly mentioned in the bible), Claudia (ditto), Isabel/Isabella, Maya, Gaia.

Why not just use Frances/Francis as a first name. You can shorten it to Fran, Frannie, Frank, Frankie, Francie etc if you want.
