Alannah or Daphne

I think I prefer one but the other one feels like it fits better with the sibling names which are both Irish. Which do you prefer? Any preconceptions of either name? The Scooby Doo thing doesn't bother me at all.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Daphne definitely! Lovely name and lovely plant

Alannah is really not my cup of tea. I agree with the PP who compared it to Nigella! I don’t like the spelling like that either

sorryforswearing · 08/04/2021 01:25

I’ve liked Alana for years but with that spelling. Don’t like Daphne. I think of it as an old fashioned dreary name.

alannah

Daphne. Alannah sounds so meh to my ear

TuvoknotSpock · 07/04/2021 22:45

Daphne

@Drunkenmonkey

Does anyone know any Daphne's and do they mostly get shortened to Daph? That's my only downside really
Forgot to say that my grandmother was often called Daphna by her friends as an affectionate twist to Daphne.
Bramblebutter · 07/04/2021 20:09

Alannah 100%

therestissilence · 07/04/2021 20:06

I really love Daphne. In Greek mythology she was pursued by Apollo and rather than giving herself up to him she turned into a laurel tree. Her own woman!

DramaAlpaca · 07/04/2021 20:01

I much prefer Daphne.

MadeOfStarStuff · 07/04/2021 19:38

Daphne

I know three adult Daphnes and one child. Two of the adults are aways Daphne and one is Dee. The child is sometimes Daffers or Daffy to family.

Drunkenmonkey · 07/04/2021 17:19

Just to clarify, we're not planning on using the nickname Alan, sorry if that disappoints anyone Grin
@YenneferOfBattenberg you may have been joking but I think Alan would be a brilliant nickname to have! GrinGrin if you could guarantee going by the nn Alan I'd change my vote from Daphne to Alannah!! Grin
Hahaha I needed a laugh. This post gave me it.

I’d guess that Daphne is going to see a resurgence as a result of Bridgerton. There are a huge number of Lyra’s in my daughters baby classes as a result of His Dark Materials being popular whilst I was pregnant

Leytonladee · 07/04/2021 13:37

Daphne definitely.

Alannah's a bit "Shannon'. Dated without the classic vibe.

Synchrony · 07/04/2021 13:16

I think choose the name you prefer. I don't personally think it matters if siblings have names that go together.

Joolsin · 07/04/2021 12:54

I prefer Daphne, but if your other two have Irish names, Alannah goes better. I've come across many spelling variations of the name, but Alannah is the most common.

YenneferOfBattenberg · 07/04/2021 12:50

@pheasantsinlove only partially joking, but I didn't get the vibe from the OP that she'd be up for Alan as a nn for her daughter.

I like the name Alan and might consider it for my future fur bébé (dog) when he/she finally joins our family.

RuthW · 07/04/2021 12:21

Difficult one..... I love both. Poss Daphne slightly more.

Dietcokeaddiction · 07/04/2021 11:22

Daphne.
Alannah sounds very dated to me.

stormelf · 07/04/2021 10:45

I prefer Daphne

KoalaOok · 07/04/2021 10:23

Daphne

Rainallnight · 07/04/2021 09:17

I love Daphne and really dislike Alannah. When I was growing up in Ireland it was a bit common. Sorry to use the word.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 07/04/2021 09:12

Alannah much nicer. It has a lovely softness to it.
