Not expecting, just hypothetical (though I would 100% do this if DH approved it). What boys name do you love for a girl?

Mine is Claude.

Over my career, I have taught and looked after girls named Jayden, Cameron, Leigh, Frankie (not short for Francesca, she was Frankie), Taylor and Teddi. Teddi was American, it suited her.

I think a lot of “boys names used for girls” has come from America - Mackenzie and Taylor are traditionally boys names but I now associate them with girls as they seem to be common on American TV shows and SM.

I have also taught a boy called Paige - which I associate as a girls name. I’ve also met a boy and a girl Alexis. I suppose that’s more “neutral”

Harley seems to be becoming quite popular for a girl. I love Marley!

Me and my friend debated Willow once (another name I love) She thought it was generally gender neutral. I consider it a girls name bi I realise this is politically incorrect.

Why don’t we see it the other way round? Is it because girls sound “tougher” with a boys name whereas a boy will seem “weaker” with a girls name? Stereotypes isn’t it - we think nothing of girls playing with cars but if a boy picks up a doll many people sadly raise their eyebrows.

Ah, I would see Claude as unisex - as you say, Claude was the name of a French queen! I think it's lovely and very graceful and refined.

I met a lovely girl called Lawrence at music school about a million years ago. If I'd had a girl I might well have used it.

Audreyhelp · 04/04/2021 20:55

I love danni

To stop sexism we should call boys traditionally girls names, and girls traditionally boys names.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Smile

STOP EVERYBODY, @MrsTerryPratchett has the solution. To stop sexism we should call boys traditionally girls names, and girls traditionally boys names. Hmm

The fact many people don't call boys traditionally girls names is a symptom of sexism, not sexism itself. The boys/men not wearing skirts and dresses is not sexist in itself as people can/should wear what they want, it's not available to them because we exist in sexist society. Me naming a little girl Claude will neither advance nor hinder feminism. If you feel so strongly about sexism how about you actually do something that will make a real difference, not try and make people feel bad about their harmless name preferences.

Finally, it is relevant that Claude is a traditionally male name, of course it is. Any time I have mentioned it the immediate response has been "but that's a boys name". Likewise, if someone started a thread asking for opinions on boys names and said Amanda people would be confused and most would respond that is a girls name. I was curious about other names people like for a girl, like Claude, that were typically seen as male.

I don't love any boys' names on a girl.

I completely agree with MrsTP.

Also, this is a light hearted thread - chill out. Nothing here is offensive or sexist.

Things can be lighthearted and sexist. Frequently they are.

If you're naming your child Claude after a princess, it's nothing to do with boy's names for girls. But you started a thread about it and it is sexist. Otherwise all the little hipster boys would be running around called Eve, Lily and Rose. But they're not. There's a reason for that.

I always wanted to be called Darrell after reading Malory Towers when I was young.

I love noa for a girl. DS would have been this. The Noah spelling is for a boy. Kate Lawler recently called her DD this so it may increase in popularity

PattyPan · 04/04/2021 20:20

I hate boys names on girls. Unisex nicknames are fine (eg Alex, Sam) but not as the full name.

Claudine is lovely btw. Or Claudia.

SionnachGlic · 04/04/2021 20:19

Frances ...Frankie!
