Too many princess names?

twinmama2021 · 01/04/2021 11:21

We have an older daughter (6) called Arabella and are expecting twins any day now really. We are struggling so much on their names and had settled on Audrey & Quinn but are now considering Aurora to replace one of those two names.
But, my question is, is having Aurora and Arabella(Belle) too many princess names / does it sound like we spend all our time watching Disney+?!

I’m British, love Quinn, don’t think of the ridiculous old fashioned Shakespearean term people seem to dredge up, and definitely see it as a girl’s name, probably because the first time I heard it was Quinn from Daria. Definitely prefer it over Aurora, although I do love that name too, I’m just cursed not to be able to say it properly as I can’t pronounce my Rs.

twinmama2021 · 01/04/2021 12:31

We’re in London now but are originally from Greenwich, CT. We’ll be here for the next 3 years minimum, and then after that we will return to NYC whenever DH’s company transfers him back. I’m just worried about Quinn not ‘fitting in’ with Arabella, Felix, Hugo & Audrey. I just wonder if Aurora ‘fits in’ better? Maybe I’m just overthinking things.

Also the main character in Glee was called Quinn right? A girl!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 01/04/2021 12:27

I don’t like princessy sounding names personally so would definitely say Audrey and Quinn. I have seen enough American TV to think Quinn is a girl’s name. I quite like it.

EvaporatedHour · 01/04/2021 12:27

I love the name Quinn! An American friend has a one year old daughter called Quinn, and whilst I wasn't over keen on it at first, I really love it now. She's a beautiful baby and it really suits her.

I prefer Audrey over Aurora but as others have said I think a more unisex sounding name would go better with Quinn. Someone I know has a daughter called Tate; that might go well with Quinn!

GertrudeTheGreat · 01/04/2021 12:26

Are you moving to London or another big city op? I think people in these sorts of areas are probably more accepting of less traditional names.

I'm technically American, but have been in the UK for many, many years. I don't see any issue with Quinn. It gets mentioned on this board all the time as a suggestion for people who want a strong, girls name and most people on here are probably British.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 01/04/2021 12:24

I still find it amazing that both your Grandmothers are named Quinn. A name that didnt even break the Top 1000 in America until 1979. I honestly agree with the others saying Quinn would feel different in that group of names. All the other names are ultra feminine and Quinn is very much unisex her in America. I work in a school and the only Quinns I have ever known have been boys.

GiggleMcdimples21 · 01/04/2021 12:24

I prefer Quinn over Aurora and I'm a disney/pixar buff (hence the username!) Aurora is too Disney imo, so I wouldn't replace Quinn with that. I get what you mean regarding the connotations. Is there a name that you like that goes with Quinn which is similar as in not girly but unisex and could be used instead of Audrey? Or could Quinn be double barreled with one of the twins names somehow? I think if you love it that much and it has strong sentiment for you as a family, it should be used, be that as a middle name, hyphenated or a first name.

LadyDanburysHat · 01/04/2021 12:18

If you ask on here you will get brutally honest answers that can be rude at times. If you love Quinn, go for it. People won't be so rude in real life. It may not be their choice but they will just see your daughter then. Don't go for 3 A names.

twinmama2021 · 01/04/2021 12:15

It’s both of our grandmothers names so we were so happy to be able to honour both sides of the family, but do worry about exactly what you’ve pointed out; the fact that Arabella and Audrey are very feminine and Quinn is a little more tomboy.

(Also worth noting that our two boys are Felix and Hugo).

I think what we’re considering is replacing Quinn with Aurora.
I’m worried about people saying she ‘drew the short straw with her name’ or has a boys name or a harsh-sounding name, etc.
Also a little worried that she’ll feel left out as Audrey & Arabella will share an initial (although Arabella is typically Belle unless she’s in trouble!!)
Also a little worried that Audrey will feel left out on not getting a family name.

But then again, I adore the name Quinn and it’s the name of both of our grandmothers, both of whom are still alive (although we haven’t mentioned to anyone at all that we were considering using Quinn for one of the girls so there wouldn’t be any hurt/let down feelings).

It's a unisex name actually.

By that logic OP can't use Quinn either then as that's a 'boy' name too?

LostInTime · 01/04/2021 12:08

Aubrey is a boy's name.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/04/2021 12:06

I'm very partial to male/gender neutral names so I'd be quite likely to use Rory as a nn for Aurora.

Esther95 · 01/04/2021 12:03

Audrey and Quinn. Or what about Aubrey?

No offence but I really dislike the name Aurora

MumofSpud · 01/04/2021 12:03

I love the name Quinn but... you have chosen (what I would call feminine names) for your other 2 girls so changing to Aurora would further emphasise this?
I remember your post about Quinn being non negotiable but not why?

wouldukissafrog · 01/04/2021 12:02

Uk here

Love Quinn and Audrey. Aurora is becoming really quite common here in certain areas, I'm not personally a fan

You other choices are lovely and go with older dad perfectly

HalfTermHalfTerm · 01/04/2021 12:02

Do you call your older daughter Belle? Arabella and Aurora is fine, Belle and Aurora (while still being fine!) would definitely make me think of Disney!

I don’t like Quinn (sorry!), but I think you’ll regret not using it if it’s your favourite name of all time. Is there a particular reason that you didn’t use it for Arabella?

Gazelda · 01/04/2021 12:01

I think Quinn is a fabulous name! Unusual but not weird or made up. Strong and full of character.

I much prefer Audrey over Aroura. It has identity whereas Aroura feels a bit 'undefined'. I know that doesn't make sense, but I know what I mean 😂

Arabella, Audrey and Quinn sound like a great bunch of kids I'd love to hang out with.

ThePricklySheep · 01/04/2021 11:59

@ThePricklySheep

Quinn for a girl is the tricky bit. Isn’t it a boy’s name?
Also should have added that I just think “Quim” Blush Sorry.
MintLampShade · 01/04/2021 11:57

@twinmama2021

Yes! That’s us! Quinn is quite possibly my favourite name of all time but (and perhaps this is my fragile pregnancy brain feeling overwhelmed) I can’t stop thinking about all the negative and at times, really unkind comments about the name Quinn and I just don’t want to set my baby girl up for life with a name that doesn’t go over well in the U.K. If we were in the US I wouldn’t be wavering at all but as we’ll be in the U.K. for the next 3 years at least, or until OH is transferred back to NYC, I’m just feeling a little worried :(
I absolutely love Quinn for a little girl. I can't imagine a boy / man with it though. Just no-no. For what it's worth, you have my vote Wink

Plus 3 years vs the rest of your lives? Go for it OP and don't worry about the Brits haha xx

Brunts12 · 01/04/2021 11:57

Aw I like Audrey & Quinn ☺️

SohoOrigami · 01/04/2021 11:57

Quinn is a lovely name! As is Audrey. I think Aurora does sound princess-y to me, which is fine but might make Audrey/Quinn feel like she has a very different type of name to both her sisters.

By the by, I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old and the names at their nursery, school, and playgroups are such a range from old classics to modern classics to ones I'd never heard before (that I think may have been made up...) - basically, being around a lot of small kids here, I don't think a Quinn would stand out in the negative way that you're worrying about. And I say that with one very unusual child's name, only about 50 given it in his year of birth, when he's ended up with another one in his reception year 🤷‍♀️

TakeYourFinalPosition · 01/04/2021 11:56

I went to school in England with a Quinn. I can't remember meeting another, but I didn't think it was massively unusual... she was a lovely girl and I don't remember anyone ever teasing her about her name.

I got teased more, my name is a very common late 80s/early 90s name, and there were five of us in our class.

I think Aurora would be just as unusual as Quinn; but when it comes to names that are unusual, I don't think teasing is as common as it's often said here. I can understand the apprehension around made up names, or really out there names, but Quinn and Aurora aren't really that.

Aurora feels like it'd get more comments, overall, as that's a really well known fairytale. Disney fans/being a Princess/etc. You can do that with any name. I wouldn't stress it. Pick nice names that you like.

Crockof · 01/04/2021 11:56

You'd have to swap Audrey imo as Aurora and Audrey are too twinnie, all post in future addresses to miss A . Surname, if using initials at school etc its confusing.
Plus Audrey and Quinn are fabulous names for twin girls.
