So, I did the Frances thread, and I think we will add it to the list.
So here is our girls list
Eileen
Jean
Delia
Susan
Frances

My favourite ever girls names are Priscilla and Shirley but dp says no way. I will continue to try and persuade him, but realistically this is our final list.
Opinions? Which is your favourite?
Dps is Jean, and I move between them all.

I like Jean the best

Onlinedilema · 31/03/2021 07:09

Off you like them sold and dp's favourite is Jean I would go with that.
I agree about the song Come on Eileen, I detest that song so Eileen is a no from me.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 31/03/2021 03:25

DEFINITELY not Eileen. It's such a 1970s serial killer documentary name.

And "Come on Eileen" might be an old song but still everywhere! It's way before my generation and I've heard it so much in pubs/movies/TV shows/at weddings etc that I know all the words 😂

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 31/03/2021 03:23

Frances or Jean.

Strongly dislike the rest!

partyatthepalace · 30/03/2021 23:23

Love Frances
Really like Jean - mid century names about to start being fashionable I think
Susan has a certain charm and ditto will start becoming popular soon I reckon
Delia is a bit fussy but Ok
Eileen - rough / bloody awful (sorry)
And I agree W your DP re Shirley and Priscilla (sorry again)

VenusClapTrap · 30/03/2021 19:33

Oh I love Eileen! It’s actually very pretty.

oohmyback · 30/03/2021 18:36

Frances. I have a Frances.

KirstenBlest · 30/03/2021 18:26

Eileen sounds nice though.

Is your real name Diana?

luluorange · 30/03/2021 18:25

@KirstenBlest

Come On Eileen was no 1 about 40 years ago

You could rule out lots of names if you went by past pop songs.

True but I think this one particularly stands out and maybe I've got a dirty mind but the "come on" part isn't very flattering!

luluorange · 30/03/2021 17:37

Frances is the nicest. Please don't choose Eileen - not sure if you've heard the song "come on Eileen" 😬 it's pretty well known and catchy...

Aozora13 · 30/03/2021 17:36

I love Frances. I quite like Jean too. I also love Joan which seems in a similar vein, but it’s my racist great aunt’s name and my Nan would never forgive me

KirstenBlest · 30/03/2021 17:07

I like all of them

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/03/2021 14:15

Actually when thinking about it more - Delia has definite revive potential, so maybe you should choose that OP. It has a pleasant sound and enough similarities to currently fashionable names (Amelia/Emilia, Delilah) that I think you may be ahead of the pack, which your daughter might prefer over a more unfashionable name!

zigaziga · 30/03/2021 14:09

I quite like them apart from Eileen, which is hideous.
Jean is a name that I thought quite ugly growing up but it’s now grown on me a lot.

TatianaBis · 30/03/2021 14:06

Blimey. They would be fine if you were naming 80 year old women.

The least awful is Frances I suppose.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/03/2021 14:05

Frances, Jean and Susan to me are classic names that are just unfashionable at the moment. Eileen, Shirley, Priscilla and Delia feel more dated/unfashionable but not as classic imo so I wouldn't risk them personally.

I'd choose between Frances, Jean and Susan based on which nn you like best (because they are unfashionable she may choose to go by a nn once she's at school). I prefer Suki/Suze over Fran/Frankie or Jay/Jeanie, so my pick of your choices would be Susan (although I'd probably use Susanna on the BC myself to give her even more options).

If you like Delia, have you considered Celia? Because it's Shakespearean and not so clearly linked to a prominent older celeb (Delia Smith), Celia sounds less dated to me.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 30/03/2021 14:02

I only like Delia and Frances.

The others are too stuffy/formal/boring/old fashioned. I especially hate Jean sorry. I prefer Ellen to Eileen. Or even Aileen. My grumpy aunt in her 70s is Eileen, our grumpy organist in her late 80s is Jean, Susan reminds me of SuBo.

I like Daphne. Do you like older names like Cecily, Celia, Cecilia, Morven, Hazel, Edith, Cressida, Gwen, Irene etc as well or is the more no nonsense, no frills types you are looking for?

20viona · 30/03/2021 13:54

they are all awful sorry.

MissyB1 · 30/03/2021 13:52

I like them all. Delia and Frances are my favourites and both were on our list.

17caterpillars1mouse · 30/03/2021 13:50

I like Eileen best, I can just imagine a little Eileen, quirky and a lover of nature :) I also met an Aileen once which I thought was nice toob

ZiggyBaby · 30/03/2021 13:25

Frances. Don't like the rest.

Synchrony · 30/03/2021 12:24

I like Delia and Susan.
I also like Priscilla but my husband vetoed.

ZednotZee · 30/03/2021 11:30

Eileen and Susan aren't very nice names imo.

The others are all passable.

Larryslockdownlunch · 30/03/2021 11:27

Love Frances and Jean. Not sure about the others.

I like Mary and Daphne though
