Constantine is becoming a favourite boys name of mine. I like it in full, but nn preference would be Stan.

Thoughts?

@Bringallthebiscuits Stanley is a hard no. It's a very unappealing name to me. Curious to hear why you think Constantine might be cause for teasing? Is it just because it's a bit long, and unusual? Or is there something that sounds crude that I have missed?

I think Stanley/Stan would be easier for him at school. He might get teased as Constantine (depending on where you live?!).

Killing Eve

Ijustlikedthename · 28/03/2021 18:01

Love it!

BrilliantBetty · 28/03/2021 17:56

Not a fan.

KirstenBlest · 28/03/2021 17:51

Konstantin is a lot better. The -ine ending looks feminine, even though it's a man's name.

PandaFluff · 28/03/2021 17:38

Ah ok. I like Stan. I don't like Constantine.

GwendolineWindowlene · 28/03/2021 17:37

I like Constantine, and I like Stan, but if you introduced me to baby Constantine, NN Stan I’d think it was pretty contrived.

Stevearnottsbeard · 28/03/2021 17:36

I thought it was a girls name🙈🙈🙈

Violetlavenders · 28/03/2021 16:26

Constantine has the emphasis on the first syllable, hence Con, Connie or Conty being natural shortenings. Yes, I like Constantine as a name - I find it classy, elegant and not overused.

I don't like Stanley or Stan at all.

SummaLuvin · 28/03/2021 16:03

Kit isn’t a natural shortening for Christopher.
Harry isn’t a natural shortening for Henry.
Jim isn’t a natural shortening for James.

And yet they are common and still work.

I think if from baby/toddler a certain NN is used then it is likely to stick. If no NN is used then at school the more obvious choices will come up. Don’t hate Con/Connie but not wild about them which is why I would use Stan.

I feel I haven’t worded my OP the best. I want to get an idea of opinions on Constantine and Stan as names for a baby in 2021, rather than how people feel about use of Stan as a NN for Constantine.

PandaFluff · 28/03/2021 15:50

Stan isn't a natural shortening of it for me. More likely to get Connie/Con

EssentialHummus · 28/03/2021 15:45

The Russian diminutive is Kostya, which isn't brilliant imo. I dunno. Not mad about it.

Violetlavenders · 28/03/2021 15:42

Stanley if you want Stan?

partyatthepalace · 28/03/2021 14:24

Yep nice

If you use Stan as a nn there’s a fair chance it will stick, otherwise I’ll be con but that’s OK

Violetlavenders · 28/03/2021 13:17

I know a few Konstantins and Constantine, both get nicknames Konti/Conti.

I like the name.

SummaLuvin · 28/03/2021 12:04

So is Grace and that has been popular for decades!!!

(fair point though)

Ellmau · 28/03/2021 12:03

Nice name, but I wouldn't get that nickname from it because the emphasis is different in the full name.

RJnomore1 · 28/03/2021 12:01

I love it but it’s a big name to live up to.
