Amber?

Thoughts? We actually don't know what we're having and will be choosing a name when baby is here but DP keeps bringing up Amber. He's shot down everything I liked, I'm pretty sure he'd be willing to budge on Amber but I actually don't mind it so have no real objections.

Firstly, as strangers what are your thoughts on the name? We won't be telling family beforehand and assume they'll be too polite if they hate it when baby is here!

Secondly, it'll be Amber Hill. I liked Holly but Holly Hill is too much of a place name! Does Amber Hill work? We weren't planning a middle name but does it need one?

Thanks for your opinions Smile

I should love this name, and I certainly did years ago but I do feel it’s dated now. The name itself is very pretty, use it if you love it.

HeadlessGummyBears · 31/03/2021 20:54

Amber Hill is lovely. I don’t think Amber or Jade are dated at all. When I was in college in 2008. there was a set of 17 year old twins in my English class - Amber and Jade. I loved the pairing and I always loved their names.

Undertheoldlindentree · 29/03/2021 17:56

I know of one born in the late 60's, always seemed quite a boho 'out there' name among all the Nicolas and Helens at school! Also know of one mid-twenties and one late secondary age. It's pretty and a 'nature' name which could explain the new popularity. No obvious shortening, so personally I would add a middle name for more choice later on.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/03/2021 17:55

Amber is nice, has a pleasant, softer sound compared to similar Jade. I don't find it too dated - it's stayed fairly steadily in the mid to lower top 100 since the early 90's but I think a name has to shoot up out of nowhere and be top 10/20 for a while to sound especially dated.

TatianaBis · 29/03/2021 17:47

Topaz?

TatianaBis · 29/03/2021 17:47

Very dated.

IllNeverLetGoJack · 29/03/2021 17:41

I prefer it in Irish and American accents. I'm not mad on Aaaaambaaaaaah which is how it would sound in some of the accents where I live.

Ijustlikedthename · 29/03/2021 17:24

Always liked it!

Drunkenmonkey · 28/03/2021 16:03

It's a really beautiful name. To me it is like Jasmine, it is very slightly dated, but it wouldn't put me off using it. If I have a red haired DD, she will be Amber.

NinaMimi · 28/03/2021 15:18

It’s highest rank in England and Wales was around 30. Now it’s about 80th.
While I do associate it with a few decades ago it was never as popular like some names to seem so attached to a time period.

HHSchultz · 28/03/2021 15:11

I know a teenage Amber. Not keen on it now. I like Saffron, not sure how that's relevantBlush

Chilldonaldchill · 28/03/2021 15:03

Personally I dislike it as it seems very dated but I don't think it sounds bad with the surname.

NotATomato · 28/03/2021 14:55

It’s nice, I know a couple of Ambers!

user64332 · 28/03/2021 14:50

Most of the comments here are out of touch. I have known at least 10 little Amber's in the past 10 years. Check out the actual stats on Dark Greener. It absolutely isn't unusual or retro.

Bluntness100 · 28/03/2021 14:49

On one side I think it’s quite nice, on the other it reminds me a bit of names like Chardonnay or thr like. I’m not sure why. On balance it would be a no from me.

user64332 · 28/03/2021 14:47

I think it's boring. I have a 13 year old and 7 year old and both have had several friends called Amber. It peaked about 2000 and has been gradually falling since but remaining around the top 50 the whole time. So very overused and gradually losing popularity. But I guess lots of people like it as there are so many.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/03/2021 14:42

Lovely name

Amdone123 · 28/03/2021 14:41

@motherofawhirlwind, oohh I like that.

motherofawhirlwind · 28/03/2021 14:04

My DD has Amberley as her middle name - we loved Amber but it didn't flow so extended it a bit.

Lulu1919 · 28/03/2021 13:36

I have a 29 year old amber

VenusClapTrap · 28/03/2021 13:29

I love it. Makes me think of the beautiful Amber Valletta.

miltonj · 28/03/2021 10:45

Amber is brill. I suggested it but oh wasn't sold.

It's absolutely not 'down market' or 'chavtastic' as some have suggested Hmm

I also don't think it's particularly 90's, there weren't any in my school, not that it would matter anyway!

shivermetimbers77 · 28/03/2021 10:31

Amber Hill is a beautiful name

May2021Mummy · 28/03/2021 10:16

I really like the name Amber you don't hear it used very often
