Carys or Cerys or Kirsten or Kirstin ????

Just that really!

Can't decide!

And also how would they all be pronounced??
I'd say:
Carys - Ca-riss
Cerys - Ke-riss
Kirsten - Ker-stun
Kirstin - Ker-stin

And could /would they get shortened? Carrie / Kerry / Kirstie / Kirsty / Kirst / Caz... ??

We're in England if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

Sophie is very overused now, Carys is more unusual in England.

Carys Sophie is lovely.

Love Kirsten (prefer this spelling) - very Scandi cool imo. Carys, Cerys and Sophie are fine too - my 2nd fave is Sophie, although the popularity with all the Sophia/Sofia's too puts me off slightly (but if it's your favourite I would go for it, as it's a very classic name).

Spied · 25/03/2021 18:33

Carys
But I love Carrie as a stand-alone name.

Undervaluedandsad · 25/03/2021 18:30

@Stevearnottsbeard

Sophie cerys sounds lovely.
It does.

I really like Cerys, I know a lovely little one, Carys is OK. Dislike Kirsten/Kirstin, I find the sound a bit harsh.

CaffiSaliMali · 25/03/2021 16:41

Carys is my favourite. Cerys nice too but I think Carys pronunciation is more obvious to anyone unfamiliar with the name - my cousin Ceri gets 'Serry' a lot and I think Cerys would get 'serise'.

I prefer Kirsten to Kirstin, I knew a lovely Kirsten who pronounced it Kirstin rather than Kirstun.

CaffiSaliMali · 25/03/2021 16:39

@jessstan2

Not keen on any but Cerys is the nicest, I like a lot of Welsh names (not Blodwin). Caris should be Charis I think, it comes from 'charisma' or 'charismatic'. Both mean 'loved' or 'loved one'.
Carys is a Welsh name, Charis is an unrelated name (Greek, I believe) with the same pronunciation.
Thedogscollar · 25/03/2021 16:15

Time out ladies.
Carys is lovely.

TatianaBis · 25/03/2021 15:42

Quite. Wink

KirstenBlest · 25/03/2021 15:31

Nobody is asking you to.

TatianaBis · 25/03/2021 15:27
@TatianaBis, it's not about you either.

Sophie is lovely.
Thus I am not giving my views on the name Brenda.

@ButterflyOfFreedom

Undervaluedandsad does it bother you or your child that they are known as eg. Sophie B in school? Sophie is my favourite girls name!
It did when she was smaller. I remember being disappointed when she started school and realising there was another girl with the same name and spelling. She’s 12 now so we’re used to it. It bothered me more than it bothered her I think.
Dyra · 25/03/2021 14:48

Out of your list I love Cerys. Carys is OK. I think Kirsten (and variants thereof) have had their day for now.

Sophie is a beautiful name. But then I honestly wouldn't care less if a name is popular and I wanted to use it.

Sophie is a lovely name too but yes I certainly know more Sophies than the other names you mention. It depends how important it is to you to have a more or less frequently used name.

I have one child with a more popular name and the other is one of the names on your list. I have no regrets over either name choice. The one with the more popular name is known at school as name and initial because there are a few of them. The one on your list is the only one in school.

@KirstenBlest

I'm in England and Brenda isn't a standard name. i don't like that either.
This thread isn’t about your preferences.
Noodlesnoodlesnoodles · 25/03/2021 13:49

I'm not keen on Kirstin / Kirsten.

I'm seriously considering Cerys as a middle name at the moment. I think it sounds softer than Carys, but both are nice.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 25/03/2021 13:27

Thanks all.

Another - maybe random, curve ball name compared to the others! - is Sophie.
Love love love this - though fear it is too popular... though maybe for good reason...

I have a Kirsten (pronounced Kir- stin) but she is usually known as Kirsty.

PeanutbutterPickle · 25/03/2021 13:04

Go for Carys- My favourite as it’s my daughters name. She’s at primary school and some of her friends call her Cazzy but then again must be a thing at her school as her friends Molly and Daisy get Mozzy and Dazzy Smile

TatianaBis · 25/03/2021 12:45

OP is in England where Carys & Cerys are not standard names.

There are Kirstys and Kirstens everywhere.
