Elizabeth

I quite like Bethany too

SilverStory · 25/03/2021 01:18

This is one of the funniest threads I've read for ages.
I'm actually quite worried about myself as I don't seem to have an 'immediate association' with CAT when I hear the rather lovely name Tabitha. Apparently everyone has this association, and it's not a geographical thing? Should I go to the doctor tomorrow. Or perhaps I just need to blame my parents for such a poor education in word association. I'm ashamed to say that I don't think I've ever heard of a cat called Tabitha.

OP, I like Bethany. Met a lovely one recently who has given me a real soft spot for the name.

I would also suggest Elsabeth as a possible alternative to Elisabeth.

DodgyPainting · 25/03/2021 00:49

Love Tabitha and the nn Tabby. I like Elisabeth and Bethany too but Tabitha is my favourite.

Knitterbabe · 25/03/2021 00:41

I like Elisabeth with an s; it’s not that unusual. I’m a secondary teacher and have taught a few.
Not Tabitha.
Dislike Bethany, it just sounds so wet.

shittingthreeeyedraven · 24/03/2021 23:35

I love Tabitha as a name! It’s so underused and classically lovely. I’m a teacher in an all girls school and have only taught 2 in 12 years of being there so it’s a nice change from the Olivias/Isabella’s/Mias etc. Different but not weird and both the girls I have taught have been seriously nice so it has good associations to me.

Ignore the cat name people, it really isn’t. One person called a cat Tabitha about 200 years ago and for some reason a few people can’t think through this. Is Peter or Benjamin a rabbit name? Also, I ever understand why Felix is loved on here and never called a cat?

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 22:57

And a jolly salutation to you too @May2021Mummy Your sunny demeanour so evident
If you’ve come to berate me, complain, copy and paste my posts or links from wiki you’ll need to form a disorderly queues behind the other two ravers
They already have a March on you with the moaning, complaining and demands that i retract all my posts and acquiesce to their opinion

sweetkitty · 24/03/2021 22:45

I have a Bethany so thank you to everyone who was so lovely about it Wink she is now 13 and utterly adorable, was an angel of a baby, toddler and little girl I’m hoping she stays the same as a teenager Grin when she was young she couldn’t pronounce the th so called herself Bessie and it’s stick as her nickname.

I also like Elizabeth and Tabitha but obviously Bethany is my favourite

May2021Mummy · 24/03/2021 22:42

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee are you still here you're really sucking the fun out of this thread for @brightwave we get it you think Tabitha is a cats name 🙄

HalfTermHalfTerm · 24/03/2021 22:40

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee

Why are you quoting my own post back to me in bold *@halfterm* I don’t have recall or cognition issuesI know what I said. You seem somewhat over invested
Mainly just to confirm that I had actually read the whole thread, including your responses. I think it’s fairly common to quote people in bold?

I wouldn’t say I’m over invested. I like the name Tabitha but it’s usually not very well liked on here which is why I clicked on the thread. I responded to your posts because I actually thought you seemed over invested and you seemed strangely antagonistic and patronising to those who hadn’t agreed with you, especially in the posts I put above.

I don’t want to derail the original thread though. I love Tabitha OP and I like Elizabeth too, although I’m not keen on Lizzie/Lizzy. Not a fan of Bethany though, sorry!

Baby name threads aren’t normally this dramatic!

Superstardjs · 24/03/2021 22:36

I love Tabitha, it was the name of my favourite hamster.
Elisabeth with an s looks odd to me. Like it with a z.
I like Beth, don't mind Bethan, but do not like Bethany. I have never met a nice one and I associate it now as a mean girl name.

ColonelPine · 24/03/2021 22:27

I vote for Elizabeth. If it has to be Elisabeth, then I would vote for Bethany.

Mummywantsaweewee · 24/03/2021 22:24

I love Tabitha in fact it’s on my girl list. I think of the daughter in bewitched.
Also like Elisabeth.
Not to keen on Bethany but that’s just because I know a lot of Bethan’s Smile

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 22:20

Why are you quoting my own post back to me in bold @halfterm
I don’t have recall or cognition issuesI know what I said.

HalfTermHalfTerm · 24/03/2021 22:15

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee I have read the thread. You’re not the only person saying that you associate it with being a cat’s name, but you do seem to be the only person saying that it is a cat’s name and that’s what most people will be thinking when actually most people on the thread seem to have not mentioned the cat association.

Predictable, well yes because it is a pet cat name. That’s the immediate association. Pussy cat
Bit like Rex for a boy and then vehemently arguing it’s not a dog name, and don’t dare say it is
By all means call a baby Tabitha, nn tabbie and fight your corner protesting that it's not a cat name
Reassure yourself you’re soooo right, it’s not a cat name. Keep saying it.
And meanwhile everyone is thinking Tabbie?that’s a cat name

of course no ones going to say in real life, that’s a cat name
They’ll think it though. Just because no ones actually blurted it out in rl doesn’t diminish the obvious association
It’s not a geographical thing, it’s an immediate association thing.
The point of a name thread is testing a name, scope out what do people think. You’ll get an honest response as people are strangers and don’t need to mind real life consequences or tippy toe around sensibilities. Don’t need to be wary of causing offence.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 24/03/2021 22:12

Love Tabitha and Elisabeth. Both beautiful names.

Tabitha does make me think of cats but I consider it a bonus: I love cats.

Eaumyword · 24/03/2021 22:02

I love the name Tabitha. Had a school friend with that name.
Like Eliz(s)abeth and all the diminutives from that.
Less keen on Bethany, but think Beth is quite pretty as a shortening from Elizabeth. Really don't like Bethan. Feels somehow unfinished to me!

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 22:02

@HalfTermHalfTerm, read the thread. I’m not the only poster of opinion that it’s a cat name. See immediately below your post for example

And pragmatically I’m not going to change my mind nor do I seek to change anyone else opinion

MerryChristmasToYou · 24/03/2021 21:57

I associate Tabitha with a cat's name.

My DD is called Dorabella and she is always complimented on her name. We've had nothing but positive comments.

HalfTermHalfTerm · 24/03/2021 21:50

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee

Protestations and wiki links are not actually going to disavow me of my POV *@mrsm43s* It’s a cat name. It’s also a female name (that I associate with cats)

What did you expect to happen?that I’d crumple faced with wiki and your emphatic assertion

I’m not going to change my mind
Conversely I expect you’ll not change your mind

You do seem quite adamant that everyone will associate it with being a cat’s name just because you do. Maybe people in real life won’t say it because they’re just not thinking it?
Rjd13 · 24/03/2021 21:38

@CeibaTree

Tabitha is a gorgeous name. Ignore the predictable 'it's a cat's name' comments - they are so boring and unimaginative!
Agree. If I imagine a Tabitha I picture creative, intelligent, beautiful... All good things
IsFuzzyBeagMise · 24/03/2021 21:06

Elisabeth.

Munchkin08 · 24/03/2021 21:06

Tabitha 100%. I have a Tabitha and have only received positive comments and she is older now and loves her name and it does not get shortened to Tabbie.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 21:01

What’s the gain in persevering with trying to change my mind?@mrsm43s
I’m not trying to disavow you of your opinion. I don’t seek to change your mind
In the great design of life no one is injured,no long term trauma sustained
As I said I’d never express that view that it is a cat name in rl to a parent with a dd called Tabitha
However on an anonymous forum, yes I’ll be candid about names

mrsm43s · 24/03/2021 20:54

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee

I’m not factually incorrect, read the thread see other posts that concur, It’s a cats name, and there is a strong enduring association. Parents of daughter called Tabitha agree it’s a cat name too

So Knock yourself out with protestations, links if you wish . It not a war if attrition. I won’t crumple and declare ok,you win

Factually, Tiddles is a cat name, Tabitha is a human name that some people use for cats. Do you really not see the difference?

It's the same as Rover being a dog name, and Max being a human name that some people use for dogs.

Tabitha and Max are human names, despite some people calling their pets by them.
Tiddles and Rover are animal names, not suitable for naming humans.

This will be my last post on this thread, as I can't bear to watch you embarrass yourself further.

Lucylivesinamushroomhouse · 24/03/2021 20:01

I LOVE Tabitha and wanted to use it for my daughter but my husband couldn’t get past the cat thing. It actually means “gazelle” and it’s also Biblical. Tabitha in the New Testament was known for her charity and generosity of spirit. Or something like that.
