Boy name help!

Forest27 · 22/03/2021 21:01

After finding out we’re expecting a boy (was convinced he was going to be a girl) I need help with boy names please! I’m really fussy with names 🙈 I’m not a fan of most traditional names like Liam, Alex, Thomas, Jacob etc I like them to be a bit different.

To give you an idea of what I like:

Noah - loved this name for years but it’s so popular now
Theodore - we liked the name Thea for a girl so not sure we want to use this
Percy - can’t decide on this one
Finley - like it but don’t love it
Hugo - OH not a fan but I like it
Rory - like it but don’t love it
Bellamy - OH hates it
Felix - OH hates it

Can anyone think of any names I might like?

@Forest27

Thanks for your help everyone! Seems like Noah is still the winner for me, but I don’t feel ready to commit just yet 😂 I’m scared of getting it wrong and hating it, but my friend said she started calling her baby by different names before she was born and one eventually stuck so it might not be a bad idea 🤔
I’ve gone round and round in circles about our boys name.. they seem to be so much harder than girls! A lot of the comments on my post said just go for your genuine favourite name, regardless of popularity or anything else. I think that’s what we’re going to do. For all it’s really popular, to me as a teacher all I care about is him not being in class full of them when he starts school because I know how bad it is to have to call them their first name and second initial all through school 🙈 but for all our boys name is number 6 in Scotland just now (Harris) I don’t actually know of any in our town yet. I was thinking of my friend’s child Olivia who is now at school. At the time when she named her it was either the top or second top girls name yet she still went with it. There are no other Olivia’s in her class or even the school that I know of. So really popularity on these ‘lists’ goes for nothing. I’ve had classes with multiple Ethans, Emily’s, Blake’s, Elliots etc when these names were probably not too 10 at the time.

So moral of the story I’d say just go for the name you actually love. I think we’ll wait til we see him but I’m about 90% sure we’re just going to go with our favourite now and ignore these lists! X

Disneymum1993 · 23/03/2021 14:11

I loved Saul,Roman ,Luca for ds but he ended up Colton which I actually love now and he suits it so much

MummaSt · 23/03/2021 13:54

My little boy is called Rory, his Dad and I love his name. We’re delighted we went with it. If we have another boy Miles is currently top of the list. We also like Barney but I’m not sure we have the confidence to go with it. We also like Noah x

YukoandHiro · 23/03/2021 13:53

Rufus

IllNeverLetGoJack · 23/03/2021 13:52

Oh just saw not Xander!

IllNeverLetGoJack · 23/03/2021 13:43

Harry "traditionally" is a nn for Henry, so yes, I'd say that's too close to your dog's name op! Anyway Harry really is done to DEATH and has been for decades. Along with charlie and jack.

Noah is fine. You clearly like it. It's popular, but who cares? If you care about that, you care about that. If you don't, you don't.

Other common, but only recently, (as I think this is what you mean):

Reuben
Freddie
Harrison (nearly Harry, but a bit different)
Ezra (not that common, but trendy a few years ago)
Elliot(t)
Elias
Roman
Rowan
Xander (Alexander)

Violetlavenders · 23/03/2021 13:32

How about Quentin nickname Quinn?

Or Marcus?

EvilOnion · 23/03/2021 11:45

Jared
Asa
Arran
Devon
Cian

Thefaceofboe · 23/03/2021 11:31

@Forest27 if it helps I work in a nursery and know a few Elijahs and non of them have ever got Eli, it tends to be more a name on its own!

Luca is really nice and definitely not too common!

If you like Noah, do you like other biblical names? Like Isiah, Ezekiel, Josiah, Gabriel? I love biblical names but my partner isn’t keen.

Forest27 · 23/03/2021 11:20

@sheslittlebutfierce parter is Alexander so I think Xander is a bit too close 😬

We do like Jasper but because my nan always has a dog called Jasper and will always call her dogs Jasper we feel it’s a bit cruel to use the name 🙈

OP posts:
Forest27 · 23/03/2021 11:18

@Thefaceofboe yes this is how I feel! But if I can get the best of both with less traditional and maybe not in the top 10 like Noah then I’m open to suggestions!

I like Quinn but OH sees is as more of a girls name which is annoying.

Like Elijah but not sure on Eli as the nickname 🤔

Lucas - prefer Luca, which used to be on my list! OH has requested I add it back on 😂

OP posts:
sheslittlebutfierce · 23/03/2021 11:16

Xander
Jasper

Thefaceofboe · 23/03/2021 11:08

Quinn, Orion, Ronnie, Jonah, Dougie, Arlo, Xander, Lucas, Milo, Seth, Elijah, Leo, Lenny.

Just a few of the names on my list ^

I also think the difference for me is the difference between traditional and popular names. I’m not a fan of traditional names such as Arthur, Edward but it doesn’t bother me if it’s popular, like Theo, Finley etc :) if that makes sense!

Forest27 · 23/03/2021 11:02

@sarah13xx we like Jasper (but my nan has a dog called Jasper and always calls her dogs Jasper) which is really annoying!

Freddie is lovely as well. We’re thinking the middle name Frederick or Freddie after my grandad ☺️

Same with Ralph, was my great grandads name so another potential middle name

Thanks for all of your suggestions everyone! I’ve run these past OH and there’s not many he likes sadly.

@IamnotwhouthinkIam we like Casper / Jasper

@partyatthepalace OH likes Sebastian and I’m on the fence about it as I’m not sure on the nickname 🤔

@quarentini I had Albie on my original list but again OH said no 🥺 I tried Bertie as well and nope!

@EvilOnion I love Elliot but OH knew someone called Elliot and it’s put him off 🙈

@IllNeverLetGoJack He likes a few of the names on the list but also traditional names which I don’t really like! He loves Harry (which I don’t mind) but we have a dog called Henry and I feel like it’s just too close. And also Zachary but I’ve never been a fan of this name.

@AnxiousAnnie86 ah it’s so hard isn’t it when you can’t agree on a name! I think after giving birth though that OH will just let me choose whatever I want 😂

I think I just want to clarify that a popular name wouldn’t stop me using it, but I would prefer something less common if possible. And traditional names (even though they are nice) are quite boring to me because I’ve grown up with loads of Simons, Stephen’s, Thomas’s etc, even though they’re not as popular now. I just like names that are bit different ☺️

Noah for me is still the main contender but I was just looking for some fresh ideas that I might not have thought of. I’ve exhausted multiple names lists and nothing else is catching my attention 😂

chipsandgin · 23/03/2021 09:41

Why not Rory for a boy if you like it - it’s mostly a boys name? Other less traditional(ish) names that I liked but were vetoed!:

Hunter
Carter
Jago
Dashiell (Dash)
Ned
Seth
Travis
Tate

Flymetothestars · 23/03/2021 09:36

Tristan?

Flymetothestars · 23/03/2021 09:35

If you want a name that's 'a bit different' then first thing first, find a list of the ONS top 100 names and avoid every single one of them. Many of the names you've listed are top 100 and extremely overdone. Noah, Theo, Rory. I know LOADS. I wouldn't have mentioned but you've specifically said you want a name that isn't too common.

Infact although you're probably thinking names like Simon and Peter are too popular , they're actually very rare these days to the next generation. Very refreshing.

Those examples are probably too traditional for you but there's plenty of lovely names to be found outside the ONS top 100

mummy412 · 22/03/2021 23:05

My little boys called Noah! He's 5 now.

I like Isiah, Adam, Moses, sawyer,

EvilOnion · 22/03/2021 23:02

Ironically, my DS has one of your traditional "popular" names but I know far more Noah, Theodore/Theo, Finlay, Rory, Brodie, Freddie, Harris and Jax/Jaxon/Jackson which are basically 10 a penny here!

Isla and Freya are also VERY common girls names here.

With that said it's never really bothered any of us, we just pick what we liked. Everyone's so busy trying to be different that they don't realise they're just following a newer trend.
