Children with same letter first name

Is this an awful thing to do? For some reason all the boys names I like start with the same letter.

(It's not this name or letter) but it's like I have an Arthur and my favourites for a second boy are Alfie and Archie.

Don't want to come across all Kardashian!

Mine are in their teens and yet to have post confusion. I guess by the time that happens they’ll be living elsewhere.
I do know someone who has the same first and middle initials as her hubby and it has led to accidentally opening post. Think Sarah Elizabeth Smith and Stephen Edward Smith.

So little comes in the post these days that I wouldn’t let it put me off a name.

Lockdownbear · 18/03/2021 10:18

@FullofCurryandparatha

#That's while they are young. DH and I have the same initial and it's not the first time we have missed the Mr / Mrs when opening mail.

You can't read your own mail...it's not as reason not to have children with the same initial!

Mrs A Smith Mr A Smith

Window envelopes where the print isn't always bang on.

I have a boy and a girl with the same initial first name. My son also has the same name as his dad (it was an unusual name and a family tradition).

Have to say though, as my son is now nearly an adult, it's a bit of a PITA when post comes and no one is sure if it's for him or his dad. And filling in the census recently was extremely confusing, trying to work out which one they were asking about. I wouldn't recommend it, tbh.

Parker231 · 18/03/2021 08:50

My DSis and I have the same initial and it’s never been an issue. Neither of us changed our surname when we got married so still have the same first initial and surname.

Amichelle84 · 18/03/2021 08:45

We are 3 siblings and all M's, never was an issue

mdh2020 · 18/03/2021 08:42

My younger sister and I have the same first initial. My mother had the name tapes printed with just the initial and surname when I went to secondary school so it was easy to hand down the uniform. However, I adopted the use of both initials early on because if anything addressed to Ms M ...... arrived at the house my younger sister would insist on opening it. Years later I still use the middle D. I recommend avoiding such confusion.

DonLewis · 18/03/2021 08:36

We did it without thinking. Trying to call for the right one to come downstairs becomes a feat of oral gymnastics.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 18/03/2021 08:34

I have this with my second 2. Actually wanted to change the spelling of the third childs name to avoid having the same initials(there are a few differentways to spell her name), but went with the spelling I originally chose, so they do have the same initials.

I know others where parent and child have ran into the same issue.

We deliberately avoided all names with the same initial as us.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 17/03/2021 15:50

It’s a non-issue. We have two dc with the same initial and have yet to receive a letter that’s addressed to Miss A Smith (example)

They generally come addressed to ‘the parents of Alice Smith’ or to Anna Smith . Maybe it was more of a problem in the past but they just don’t come addressed like that any more.

lovelsa · 17/03/2021 12:16

I personally am not a fan of siblings having the same first letter name. We have ruled out names solely because of this.

As a side note, my second boy is Arthur and his nickname is Archie...so might be too similar anyway.

KatherineSiena · 16/03/2021 22:44

I agree with the above, if the name sounds and looks different then it should be ok. I’d steer clear of anything too “matchy”.

I once knew twins back in the day called Michael and Michelle, which was very odd.

BramStoker · 16/03/2021 22:41

Me and my brother have names with the same initial letter that with hindsight do sound a bit cheesy together, think 'Tom and Tilly' or 'Ben and Bethany'

I honestly don't recall anyone ever commenting or it being an issue at all (my parents are as far away from Kardashian type people as you can be!)

We are both in our 40s now

Synchrony · 16/03/2021 22:37

Depends on the names I think. Edna and Elizabeth, or Stephanie and Samuel would be fine imo, as they are different sounds, syllables and possibly sex.

Annie and Andy or Arthur and Archie etc would be too similar for me.

RedMarauder · 16/03/2021 21:22

People posting it isn't a problem presume that the children will move out permanently when they are 18.

In my family there are issues with some of my siblings having the same initials as their same sex adult children and using the same bank, car insurance company, etc.

And that's ignoring the fact that 3 of my siblings had the same initials so as a PP said as children it caused problems when sending letters for appointments.

user1493494961 · 16/03/2021 21:14

I know a family of five siblings, their names all begin with the letter C.

KirstenBlest · 16/03/2021 21:01

@BellamyBells, If you have a James and want to call DC2 Jorja or Jerald, then you get the Kar-ian theme

nestlestealswater · 16/03/2021 20:56

I think with two or even three at a push it would be okay so long as the names weren't too similar. Juliet, Jospehine and James? Fine. Any more children and it gets into Duggar territory! The twins Jeremiah and Jedidiah Confused

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/03/2021 20:36

The Kardashian thing wouldn't occur to me (unless you had planned on K names and your surname started with K!) and I think same initials are cute for a girl and boy sibset (and it didn't cause any problems for me and my Dbro, plus saved my Mum money on name tapes!).

But I think it would cause post confusion with 2 sibs of the same sex (I wouldn't have wanted Dsis accidentally opening my mail - both addressed to Miss I. AmnotwhouthinkIam - middle initials aren't always used ).

BellamyBells · 16/03/2021 20:07

Ok so it's not Arthur, Archie any of those. I didnt want to out myself. They actually happen to all be J names so a bit more unusual!

nitsandwormsdodger · 16/03/2021 19:31

Both mine have same same initial , same as you fav names ... my thinking is that by the time they are old enough to get mail , mail, paper mail won't exist maybe not even birthday cards as that's their only mail at the mo

Easterbunnygettingready · 16/03/2021 19:26

I have
2 J names
2 T names.
2 R names
2 C names
Never gave it a thought tbh!! Ime as long as initials don't spell something daft don't worry!!

scrivette · 16/03/2021 19:25

My sibling and I have the same initial and it was never an issue and wasn't something that I ever thought about.

babynamelover · 16/03/2021 19:19

Not awful but think it's nice to have own first initial.
I'm one of five and we all have a different one.
