So we are loving the name boys name Wilbur well actually I love Wilby so officially he would be Wilbur on birth certificate but he would always be called Wilby or Will. I wanted an alternative to William. I know a lot of people will say they just think of the pig ( a little brave one at that ) in charlottes web, but let’s not forget the first man to invent at airplane Wilbur White, and the South African Author Wilbur Smith. I also have a Daughter named Eliza.
Honest thoughts I won’t be offended xx

I don’t like the name Wilfred for a boy though at all. For a dog then yes. I wish we’d called our dig that funnily enough! Good luck!

bluebabydinosaur · 14/03/2021 19:43

I like it but wouldn’t be brave enough to use it myself. I do prefer Willowby (can’t spell) it though. Sounds a little more handsome than Wilbur.

It is a marmite name. I can see the reactions in people, some really don’t like it as shown here. My Wilbur has had no issues at school but he is only little at the moment. We gave him a normal second name so he could use that if he wanted to, and we knew he could go with Will in the future too.

Love it

partyatthepalace · 14/03/2021 13:27

Really like it

I would have automatically thought of C’s web as a know a couple of little Wilbur’s, but it wouldn’t bother me anyway

UnderHisAye · 14/03/2021 12:13

Honestly, I think Wilbur is awful and Wilby is dreadful. It's so wet and whiny sounding.

These are the types of names that are fawned over on MN but in real life people will be like 'did you hear they named their son Wilby?!'

Tinks1985 · 14/03/2021 11:42

@StressedTired

I love the name Wilby! My grandad, born 1920, had a twin brother named Wilby (that was the full name) who died aged 2. I've always thought if I ever have a boy I would use the name.
Ah this is nice to hear and sad at the same time xx

@Cbeebiesrehab

Wilby just reminds me of Part Time Working Mummy and I would presume you’re a fan.

Wilbur is ok but I prefer Wilfred as far as ‘Will’ names go.

Never heard of it? Is it a tv show?

Wilbur is awful. It's such an ugly name and I immediately think of the pig from Charlotte's Web.

@user1471446186

I’ve got a Wilbur! We often call him Wilbs and when he was a baby I’d call him wubs or wubwub (sounds ok when I say it to him but cringe to write down!) we mostly call him Wilbur though. I love his name
I can't believe I didn't think of Wilbs but love that as a shortened name!

Has he ever had any issues in the playground etc? I think we are going to go for it as we both love the name! X

I actually really like Wilbur especially with the option of the more popular name will if he doesn't take to it himself. I say go for it Smile

Firebird83 · 14/03/2021 01:47

Wilbur is ok, I know a 2 year old one. Wilby is very wet though!

Nell96 · 13/03/2021 20:33

I like it. There's also Wilfred, which would give you the option of Wilf, Fred or Freddie.

KaptainKaveman · 13/03/2021 20:29

Wilfred?

user64332 · 13/03/2021 20:28

Wilbur is gorgeous, I've always loved it. Wilby is ridiculous though.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 13/03/2021 20:24

I must be very old but it reminds me of Mr Ed the talking horse.
Willlbuuuurrrr!

babynamelover · 13/03/2021 20:21

I know one they went with it because of the airplane connection he has a Sister Bonnie.

I prefer Willoughby to Wilbur but that's just my personal opinion 😊.

@Mabelann

With Mumsnet I think it’s luck of the draw as to whether you get positive or negative responses to a name depending on when you post!

If it’s any help, I also like Atticus, Otto, Sebastian, Zachary, Issac and George!

Agree 100%!

Also LOVE Wilbur!

CoffeeRunner · 13/03/2021 19:10

It’s not to my personal taste but then again I’m not a fan of “old man” names in general.

Wil is a good neutral nn though.

@Enidblyton1

Wilby is a cute nickname for a little boy. If he’s embarrassed by it when he’s older, then he can become Will. I’m not a hug fan of the name, but there’s nothing wrong with it. It may be outside the top 100, but I suspect it has geographical pockets of popularity like many names. I know 3 Wilburs under 8 who live in Fulham. My friend called her little boy Willoughby. I wasn’t sure about it when I first heard it, but it’s really grown on me.
Thank you . This is interesting that you know 3! Yes he can also be Will when he's at school
