@Sandgrown1970

Great name for a dog

Or...and bear with me here...like...a book. Of MAPS. Or something...

I do realise that I think very out of left field. I just feel that, if I had a book containing maps, I’d feel inclined to call it an atlas. Just saying.

But then it could get awkward in Geography. “Atlas, bring the Atlas to me. No not yourself, the ATLAS. The Atlas from my shelf. C’mon Atlas hurry up! Stop laughing children, I don’t know what’s so funny. Atlas, why are you crying?”

Well I am going to go against the grain here and say that I 1 don't mind it for a girl and 2 prefer it to Aurora I always find Aurora a clumsy name. I follow a YouTube who has an Aurora and every time she days it i cringe a little. Odd really as its not a unpleasant sound its just not working for me.

Crunchymum · 18/03/2021 16:07

Atlas was suggested for our new kitten (boy) but was vetoed by everyone barring our 8yo.

Sorry it's not a great name for a human child of either sex.

Lalliella · 18/03/2021 01:11

Please no.

Serin · 17/03/2021 15:46

I know an Atlas. He is 7 and a Rottweiler. His name really suits him, he always looks a bit pissed off.

McEwan · 16/03/2021 11:53

Of course an Atlas is a fine present for a girl. Why did you post this in baby names?

FakeFruitShoot · 16/03/2021 08:11

It's a great name but it's a male name.

Would you call a boy Athena or Diana? Why not?

annacondom · 15/03/2021 21:10

No. Atlanta, Athena,? Artemis is absolutely gorgeous

stellarfox · 15/03/2021 21:04

Sorry I really don’t like it for either gender

MadeOfStarStuff · 15/03/2021 19:46

Absolutely awful

I really don’t like the trend of boys names for girls (and wouldn’t like the reverse either), it just makes me think the parents really wanted the opposite sex child and/or are trying far too hard to appear cool and original.

I don’t really like Atlas as a boys name either tbh

A celebrity has named her daughter Atlas in the last year or so. I find it a really odd choice for a human child, male or female. It’s just a bit much isn’t it?

Great name for a dog.

daisypond · 14/03/2021 15:42

No. It’s a boy’s name at best- but not something you’d wish upon a child. Aurora is better. I don’t like it much but at least it’s a girl’s name. Aster? It’s a flower.

partyatthepalace · 14/03/2021 15:42

Aurora is nice, quite popular, but not super.

Stella or Estella for star is an alternative, or other goddess names like Athena, Diana, Anthea, Alethea, Persephone, Freya, Thora, Bridget.

florascotia2 · 14/03/2021 14:38

You can read about Atlas here - and see pics of him: www.theoi.com/Titan/TitanAtlas.html#Family

He was a giant. Described as 'baleful', 'stooped', 'with a burden', 'with chafed shoulders', he 'moans' with his endless effort in spite of his size and strength. He's usually said to be old.
He had at least 12 daughters - maybe one of their names would suit?

Andromeda, Atalanta etc as suggested by previous posters are nice. I also like Arethusa.

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 14/03/2021 14:27

I like it, but think of it as a boy name, as the Greek myth is a man and there are all those statues of a big hulking fella. Wouldn't work for me on a girl.

I like Aurora. Too popular depends on what you mean by too popular. There are a few around, but it isn't like Olivia or Sophia for example.

I love Andromeda, but it might be a bit brave!

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 14/03/2021 13:55

It’s hideous even for a boy. All the Atlas art and sculptures are horrible, so depressing, poor man with the weight of the world on his back. So negative.

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/03/2021 13:52

Just don't 🙄

Ellmau · 14/03/2021 13:49

Atlanta or Atalanta would be OK for a girl.

I like Aurora. Or Aurelia.

LavenderDiamond · 13/03/2021 14:20

Don't do Aurora either. It sounds so aggressive.

I know one. Bit beefy and a brat. Puts me off.

Aria is v pretty

LavenderDiamond · 13/03/2021 13:54

..... I thought this thread was about a christening gift, the I realised to in baby names.

Don't do it

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/03/2021 13:53

Aurora is fine imo - pretty, feminine (but has a more mascuine nn in Rory if she wants) and has nice nature as well as classical links. From what I remember there were about 800 Aurora's born last year so while it is definitely on the rise, it is nowhere near Olivia or Amelia etc levels and she's still likely to be the only one in her class.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 13/03/2021 13:50

Aurora will never go stratospheric in popularity
and she can always call herself Dawn if it does......

Starsandglitter · 13/03/2021 13:39

I don’t think it’s as much ‘mn’ won’t approve as just with an unusual name, you are only going to have a small percentage of people saying they like it? If you ask about a top ten name, you will get a higher percentage say they like it. In real life, most people will say it’s lovely as id never dream of telling someone their I didn’t like their baby’s name! The nameberry forum is a great one to discuss more unusual names. I do like names that are a bit different but I think atlas is too much for me, I’m not sure I’d like to be called Atlas, Perhaps a middle name? Aurora is lovely but has become popular very quickly. Any other names on the list? Alannis or indigo come to mind for some reason
