Can I give my DS2 my DS1's middle name as first name?

Baby due in May, my DS1 is 2 and his middle name is Theodore.

We are having difficulties finding a name both of us like and we both really like our DS1's middle name.

Is this something we can do? I'm not sure if it's 'acceptable'. Just looking or honest opinions, without being rude please x

We sort of have it the other way round. DC2’s middle name is DC1’s first name but in another language. I personally think it’s bonkers but DH was adamant and it’s the name he wanted to give to DC1 but I vetoed in favour of an anglicised version.

Of course you can’t! Don’t be silly. There are thousands of names, pick one that does t make DS2 seem like an afterthought.

MyOtherProfile · 11/03/2021 05:52

Of course you can. I know a family who did and while I did raise an eyebrow on first hearing I certainly never thought it was a bad thing.

wanderlove · 11/03/2021 05:49

I have one sisters middle name as my first name and the others first name as my middle name! It's never bothered me and as a child I loved it! I thought it was great that we all had a combination of each other's name. It's never bothered me or them; I really can't relate to the feelings mentioned above of having your name stolen or not having your own name.

Aimee1987 · 11/03/2021 05:47

I would. Who ever uses their middle name.

Tamingofthehamster · 11/03/2021 05:44

I would use it.

Mavedrai · 11/03/2021 05:42

I wouldn't do it. It doesn't seem fair to DS2. I'm sure there's another name out there that you'll love just as much, just need to find it. Good luck!

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 10/03/2021 23:34

No-give then their own name. It’s like you used up all your favourites on your first child.

Synchrony · 10/03/2021 23:20

I would do it.
I know someone else who did it too and it seems to have caused no issues.

SomethingAboutNothing · 10/03/2021 23:00

I am the 2nd child in that scenario, people often assume I have her name as a middle name (I don't). It makes very little difference to anything as our middle names are used so rarely. Can't say I've ever been bothered, or that my sister felt her name was stolen Grin

Milkshake7489 · 10/03/2021 22:52

I personally wouldn't (I have a family member who did this and the older sister is still annoyed at having her middle name 'stolen').

Of course your dc might not mind, or may even like the connection... but there's no way to be sure.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 10/03/2021 22:51

I've had friends who's parents did this. So DD1 was Sophie Jane and DD2 was Jane Louise (not real names)
They loved having that link.

mommybunny · 10/03/2021 22:49

Didn’t Prince William do that with Prince Louis? I think that’s one of George’s middle names.

Flywheel · 10/03/2021 22:48

I would. I wanted to use dd1's middle name for dd2. I didn't and still have regrets. If you love the name, I say go for it

Tigertigertigertiger · 10/03/2021 22:48

Of course you can !

Cocopogo · 10/03/2021 22:48

Yes I don’t see why not

Rach247 · 10/03/2021 22:47

Yes, but then I’d change DS1’s middle name to something else.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/03/2021 22:47

It does sound like ds2 is an afterthought. Not saying he is, but it could look like that.

cheesebubble · 10/03/2021 22:46

@DramaAlpaca you're probably right and if it felt just right, I wouldn't ask on here.

I even said maybe he has to arrive for us to find a name we agree on x

I wouldn't personally, to be honest.

Keep looking, you'll find something you like just as much.
