Thanks for letting us know @CaffiSaliMali - I've only just started beginners Welsh and haven't personally met any Seren's (only heard the name, but pronounced by English speakers so it seems to vary a bit)!

HeadNorth · 07/03/2021 09:00

I don't think you need to be Welsh to use Seren. Like I said up thread, it is also used as a shortened form of Serenity, rather than as a Welsh name in its own right. I think it is lovely.

CaffiSaliMali · 07/03/2021 08:57

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

While I'm not a fluent Welsh speaker, I've always pronounced it as it's spelt - as I think the letter E is pronounced with an "eh" sound in Welsh, so as "Seh - rehn".

Although I suppose similar Serena is more classic, I think Seren is fairly well known outside Wales, so I personally don't think you have to be Welsh to use it OP.

Your pronunciation is correct, the en in Seren is pronounced like the en in hen, pen and wren. Same 'eh' sound in the first e as well as you said.

Seren x

Love Seren fab name

ladygindiva · 06/03/2021 22:32

Seren is beautiful.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/03/2021 22:28

Sorry that was meant to be for YouBoggleMyMind about not needing to be being Welsh imo to use Seren, not OP.

People don’t pronounce Seren properly. It’s also the Dawn of the times, and I think it’ll date badly. There are worse names out there, though. I quite like Winter, but I wouldn’t actually use it.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 06/03/2021 21:18

Seren, although Serena is lovely too. Winter is fine as a middle name.

DragonPoop · 06/03/2021 21:08

How is Seren supposed to be pronounced?
Like Erin with a S in front (seh- rin)
Or like the suh- wren (like the bird?)

CaffiSaliMali · 06/03/2021 21:04

I'd choose Seren. It's a pretty name even if often mispronounced as 'Serrun'. It has a nice meaning too.

MrsBungle · 06/03/2021 21:02

Love both. Seren Winter is a beautiful name.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/03/2021 20:58

When are you due? If it's not winter then I wouldn't choose that. I love Seren.

partyatthepalace · 06/03/2021 20:57

Seren is lovely

Wouldn’t use Winter as a first name

PiratePetespajamas · 06/03/2021 20:57

I loathe Seren. Sounds like some kind of cleaning product. But I can see I’m outnumbered! I strongly considered Winter for one of our DC, think it’s beautiful and have never met one.

ShrimpSymphony · 06/03/2021 20:53

@AnnaSW1 I know a Seren short for Serendipity now that’s all I ever think of when I hear it too.

AnnaSW1 · 06/03/2021 20:41

I'd have to go for winter because I can't say Seren without silently saying dipity

Wolfiefan · 06/03/2021 20:38

I love Seren too.

Happenchance · 06/03/2021 20:35

Winter

YouBoggleMyMind · 06/03/2021 20:30

I really like Seren but not Welsh 😩

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/03/2021 20:23

Seren - it's lovely and fairly well known, but not overused. Winter is very cool (no pun intended!) but it's one of those names that could risk dating more or becoming trendy - would make an excellent middle name though.

Nell96 · 06/03/2021 19:59

Seren. Serena is also nice.

Quercus3 · 06/03/2021 19:53

Lovely names, I think I'd prefer to be called Seren

ILoveShula · 06/03/2021 19:29

Dislike both.
