Thoughts on the name Cole

Hi, im due my 3rd baby soon and really struggling on a boys name this time. We already have 1 son who has a very traditional name (Henry) which we love, but a lot of other traditional names I like are already taken by friends or family this time around. I've always liked the name Cole (probably from being a huge charmed fan when i was younger) but worry about it being too "out there" so would appreciate your thoughts. My husband is keen on the name Monty but I'm not sure about that either... 😬

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I almost used it for DS - inspired by Cole Porter. But DH vetoed.

I’ve known too many dog Montys to not associate it with dogs but it can be a nice name too. Prefer Cole though

RuddyHellItsSoftCell · 05/03/2021 21:01

I like it. Did anyone use to watch sunset beach?

Itsokthanks · 05/03/2021 21:00

I only know one Cole and the name doesn't have great connotations for me. I'd put it in the same category of Kayden, Kai, Jaxon etc.
I love Monty.

DenisetheMenace · 05/03/2021 21:00

I love it because I adore Cole Porter’s songs.

Twoforthree · 05/03/2021 20:59

One of my favourites

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 05/03/2021 20:58

I like it! Reminds me of The Box of Delights

AnxiousMum2015 · 05/03/2021 20:57

Love the name Cole! I was one of my shortlist names for my son :)

Nogardenersworld · 05/03/2021 20:56

I love it and don’t think it’s out there at all

partyatthepalace · 05/03/2021 20:54

I like Cole as a nn for Nicholas - even if you don’t think you’ll use it I would put that on the birth cert, as Cole is a bit downmarket as a full name (and if I were him I’d feel short changed next to Henry!) Monty is nice as a nn for Montgomery, but Monty and Henry is a bit much as a combo.

percheron67 · 05/03/2021 20:50

Old King?! It is a surname . Especially if your own surname is Miner.!

Ijustlikedthename · 05/03/2021 20:26

Love Cole!

daisypond · 05/03/2021 20:15

Nicholas and Cole as a nickname.

AbstractHeart · 05/03/2021 19:56

The only one I know spells it Kohl.

I agree with pp that I prefer Nicholas, nn. Cole

4amWitchingHour · 05/03/2021 19:52

Eesh, totally disagree, don't like Cole at all, I'd think you were naming him after a footballer. But then I don't particularly like Monty either, even though Monty Don is a legend. Sorry OP, I'm no help.

DoNotEatTheFreePistachioIceCre · 05/03/2021 19:51

I like it as a shortening for Nicholas, but not so much on its own.

I feel the opposite way about Monty! Only like it on its own and not as a shortening for Montague or Montgomery.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/03/2021 19:48

Oh, and I find Monty much more trendy/hipster, athough it's a nice enough name. It also shares too many sounds with Henry for me to work as well for a sibset.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/03/2021 19:44

Cole is lovely - a very cool but traditional diminutive for Nicholas (which I'd stick on the BC, even if you dont plan on using it on a day to day basis - Nicholas is more classic, fits better with Henry and gives him more options if he wants when older).

Firebird83 · 05/03/2021 14:44

It’s better than Monty, but I’d have Nicholas “Cole” instead

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/03/2021 14:15

I love Cole. Despise Monty

caringcarer · 05/03/2021 13:24

There is a Cole in my sons class at school he is 14.

Lynora · 05/03/2021 13:23

Love Cole, not keen on Monty.

KirstenBlest · 05/03/2021 13:20

Not keen on Cole, although I like Cole Porter.
I like Monty but it seems a bit celebrity-inspired.

justanotherneighinparadise · 05/03/2021 11:26

Feels quite American. I don’t hate it.

MooseBreath · 05/03/2021 11:25

Cole is much better than Monty.

Whatsyourflava · 05/03/2021 10:44

I LOVE the name Cole and don't see it as particularly out there. Wouldn't raise many if any eyebrows

Monty is ok
