Thoughts on Jupiter for a boy. Possible nicknames?

No to Jupiter, my first association was the "pit" sounds like "spit". Weird connection I know, but just my input Grin

Some names should be reserved for pets.

mummywantstobeslim · 03/03/2021 16:26

Jupiter is not a name I love. I know a Lo called mercury though lol

scrivette · 03/03/2021 16:24

I like it.

HolyMusicalBman · 03/03/2021 16:21

Thanks so far. I was thinking Peter as nickname if he ever wanted to blend in rather than using his full name.

So, it is a very cool name. I have two concerns. One is that, when I was at school, we used to proclaim people "stupider than Jupiter."
My other concern is that the Greek and Roman Gods don't really hold up against today's #metoo movement. Basically, most of them are serial rapists. And this is depicted in art - for instance Correggio did a painting that shows Jupiter disguised as a cloud in order to grab Io, Boucher showed him disguising himself as Diana in order to seduce Callisto.
But if you explain that he's totally named after the planet, not the God....? And it's a super cool name (also, the insult that we came up with at school was potentially quite niche. We are all studying Classics.)

I’m not a huge fan. It’s a massive name to carry off.
Fine if he’s the cool, handsome kid at school. Not so great if he’s small and weedy.
Could you imagine your DH as a convincing Jupiter? If not, maybe safer to steer clear.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/03/2021 15:48

Jupe?
Pete?
Piter?
Jules?

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 03/03/2021 15:46

It will get shortened to Ju / Jew at school.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 03/03/2021 15:45

Ah, loved the three investigators! Every time they got a reward for saving the day they put it in their college fund!

I like the name Jupiter!

Pulledamonica · 03/03/2021 15:42

Just thinking of a grown ass man walking around the place like "hi, my name's jupiter" and people going "is it fuck"

I just think its a bizarre thing to inflict on a child. I can't imagine a lawyer or a politician or a doctor being called jupiter. It reminds me of pluto the dog...

nurseriess · 03/03/2021 15:34

Hahahaha this reminds me !!!!! When I was about 7 there was a boy in my year called ‘Jupiter’ ! Well for some unknown reason I thought that’s what his name was for about 2 years of primary school and I have no idea why anyway I called him that until I heard him called by his real name .... Raymond
How on Earth i got ‘Jupiter’ I’ll never know !

Annebronte · 03/03/2021 15:34

Jupiter Jones!

Annebronte · 03/03/2021 15:33

The Three Investigators!

Annebronte · 03/03/2021 15:31

There used to be an American teen detective series of novels and the leader was called Jupiter. They called him Jupe or Jupes. Can’t remember what it was called, which is bugging me now! It had Alfred Hitchcock in.

ivfbeenbusy · 03/03/2021 15:26

Bloody awful

JemimaTiggywinkle · 03/03/2021 15:25

Why would you need a nickname when Jupiter is such a perfect name?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/03/2021 15:25

Nope.

In terms of cool space planet name, I like it.
But in terms of Roman King of the Gods, it's a bit much.

OldRailer · 03/03/2021 15:02

I prefer Apollo!

GAW19 · 03/03/2021 14:58

Never thought of it for a name before but I love it! Grin

OldRailer · 03/03/2021 14:57

Yes to too self important!

fabulousspider · 03/03/2021 14:57

It's kinda cute but the kid will be taken the mickey out of at school I reckon.

Unicant · 03/03/2021 14:56

YES
I love it!
I love space themed names (I know its also a gods name)
Had Astrid and Celeste and Luna on our list for a girl.
I think its really fun. Just give a more traditional middle name he can use if he ends up being a more straightlaced type of person... but honestly I think usually parents who give their children out there names end up raising kids who are on board with that. And now days everyone seems to have quite out there names.. my sons class in school has an Ophelia, a Titus and an Augustus!
