Wild card - Emerald

jemimafuddleduck · 02/03/2021 21:37

I've posted what feels like 100 times so far about our baby name for DD due in 2 weeks.

Middle name will be Jean - that's pretty much a certainty.

We had almost decided on the first name Darcy - surname begins with a D and I like the alliteration.

But, we have a bit of a wild card alternative for the first name - Emerald, nn Emmy.

Can I have honest thoughts? Is it too "out there"?

So -

Darcy Jean

Or

Emerald Jean?

There are definitely multiple nicknames she could be called, if she wanted.

I've just had a thought too, not sure why this didn't occur to me before. We have a close family member named Ruby. Would this be an issue / too odd, do you think? Emerald and Ruby? They wouldn't see each other THAT often but would be cousins so have the same grandparents? Or maybe I am just overthinking this and should just go with this lovely name!

I like Emerald better than Darcy.

NeedSomeInfoAgain · 03/03/2021 11:51

I like Emerald and Emmy Jean. If she wanted a more grown up nn when she's older, how about Mera?

rejectedprincess · 03/03/2021 07:52

OP - I absolutely love it and it is on my list. I think it is stunningly beautiful.
I am also surprised by the love for it on this thread and was expecting a lot of 'trashy stripper name' responses.
I always think it would make a fabulous middle name if first was not an option.

GADDay · 03/03/2021 06:15

Emerald is the nicest name I have heard in a long time.

Gorgeous, strong, easy to pronounce, will carry well through life.

🤩🤩🤩🤩

midnightstar66 · 03/03/2021 06:13

Ooh - someone has pointed out Emerald Jean might sounds like Emerald Green I hadn't thought of this!!

Didn't make that connection at all but even if I had I can't see why it would be in the least bit a problem.

midnightstar66 · 03/03/2021 06:10

Lovely, as above unusual but not out there. Emmy is adorable! Works with Jean. (Starting to wish dd was called Emmy Jean 😆)

AnyaMoondial · 03/03/2021 05:30

Could you have two middle names? Then it could be Emerald Darcy Jean which is lovely.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/03/2021 03:26

Neither are exactly to my taste (I'd prefer similar sounding Emmeline or Dalia), but of the two definitely Emerald - Darcy is just so trendy now. Emerald Jean is fine imo- the middle name is not heard often enough that it matters that Jean rhymes with Green.

Enidblyton1 · 02/03/2021 23:50

The beautiful and talented Emerald Fennel is a very positive association for the name. I love it! Emerald Jean is also a lovely combination.
It prefer it a million times to Darcy.

marriednotdead · 02/03/2021 23:40

Don’t like Darcy and it’s becoming overused round here.

Know an Emerald, very lovely and intelligent young lady. Definitely Emerald for me.

VegetarianDeathCult · 02/03/2021 23:29

Emerald is a bit 1920s showgirl, but I like it far more than Darcy.

Disneymum1993 · 02/03/2021 23:28

Love it such a pretty name

funnyoldonion · 02/03/2021 23:27

Love Emerald! Find Darcy a bit chavvy sorry!

averythinline · 02/03/2021 23:25

I used to like Darcy but have now heard it screeched across parks/playgrounds..its really put me off

Not sure about Emerald ..but can't quite see why...Em and Emma are great nn and I quite like Emma as know some very cool Emmas but what about Esmerelda?.....that sounds fab with Jean..and could be Esme or Em ..

For something different..
Meredith, Margaret (Peggy), Elspeth all work well with Jean

Ikeameatballs · 02/03/2021 23:23

I love Emerald and Jean but I’d struggle to unhear Emerald Green tbh.

I do much prefer Emerald to Darcey.

jemimafuddleduck · 02/03/2021 23:22

Wow, thank you all. I'm really pleasantly surprised by the love for this name!

I much prefer Emerald to Darcy.

Firebird83 · 02/03/2021 23:19

Emerald is much nicer than Darcy, which is a bit downmarket.

LouiseTrees · 02/03/2021 23:19

@jemimafuddleduck

Ooh - someone has pointed out Emerald Jean might sounds like Emerald Green Confused I hadn't thought of this!!

Do people think that would be an issue? I mean, obviously day to day her middle name wouldn't be used, but even so....

I actually like it because of that
LionMother · 02/03/2021 23:18

Sorry I don't like Emerald. I think it sounds common, trying to be posh.

sonnysunshine · 02/03/2021 23:17

I am surprised at how much I and others love Emerald. I'm trying to understand if I would not like to introduce myself as it but think I would and I definitely would like to be an Emmy too.

Great name.
Darcy on the other hand is dull and dreary

SirSamuelVimes · 02/03/2021 23:16

Odd point to consider, but... Is she likely to inherit big boobs from either side of the family? Big boobs + the DD initials = double d as obvious and unpleasant nickname.

Don't really in like Emerald but I think that's because I once taught a really, really difficult girl of that name (not all her fault, not the best home life) and as it's an unusual name the association is very strong!

anomletteandaglassofwine · 02/03/2021 23:15

Emerald is a fantastic name, very elegant, unusual but not 'out there', I really like it. I think Emerald Jean sounds fine.

AllMyPrettyOnes · 02/03/2021 23:15

Emerald is much nicer
