Kitty for DD?

AmyParker · 25/02/2021 19:49

Me and dh are due a baby girl in early june and we're discussing names. He suggested Kitty, which sounds cute but I thought it sounded quite childish and would not be the best when she's older. Do you agree or am i just being paranoid? Also he's not a fan of katie or Cat, which i suggested as alternatives.🙄😂
Thanks!

I know a Kitty. She's fab. Suits her name. Not sure if it's a shortening/Nick name but it's great!

H3llie · 27/02/2021 11:12

My daughter is called Kitty (the rescue named her), it suits her!
Seriously though, as others have said, I think it's a lovely nickname for a girl but perhaps use a longer legal name like Kathryn or Catriona, then she can choose whether to use the same nickname or a different one when she's older.

I know several Kitty's - some short for Katherine and some as the given name. I really like it and don't think it feels at all cutesie.

BiBabbles · 27/02/2021 10:33

I wouldn't as a full name - maybe Kirsi for a similar sound or Kitty as a nickname for Katalin or some of the previous suggestions.

BallsToYouSue · 27/02/2021 10:03

As a comparison, the name Isis was a name before it was a terrorist group. But I still wouldn't use it myself anymore 🤷‍♀️.

@VenusClapTrap

It is nothing like Mollie, Maisie etc, (which I don't like anyway), as their isn't a baby animal of the same name!

Kitty was a diminutive of Catherine long before it became a common name for cats, in the same way that Molly and Luna are girls’ names commonly used for dogs today.

I did go on to say this. You cut it out of your quote though...

It is not that the name came after the animal name, it is that it is the same as a common name for an animal. I think kitten probably predates Kitty though, which isn't a million miles away. I don't mind it as a diminutive for Catherine as that gives her the option. But on its own, it removes any option to have something other than Kitty, which I know I would appreciate as an adult woman.

There*

BallsToYouSue · 27/02/2021 09:05

I think some people might be able to pull it off as adults. But it's cruel not to give her the option. It is nothing like Mollie, Maisie etc, (which I don't like anyway), as their isn't a baby animal of the same name! It's like calling her pup or Moggy or larva (ok maybe not). It is a name, but it isn't a name everyone will enjoy having. I wouldn't. I'd look a right prick at 5'8" with my very non cutesy look saying "oh hi, I'm Kitty". Other people will be fine with it. But at least give her the option.

toomanypillows · 27/02/2021 08:51

I taught a Kaitlyn who was "known as" Kitty on the school system.

She's 21 now and still uses Kitty. She started a Photography business and it says Kitty Surname on her cards and promos.
It really suits her. But Kaitlyn is nice too.

Bobbiepin · 27/02/2021 08:47

Tabitha is a cat name anyway. Don't call her Tabitha AND Kitty. That's cruel.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 26/02/2021 22:19

My DS would've been Kitty if he'd been a girl. I still love it. I've since met two other Kittys and they are different ages and it suits them. I don't think it's really that different from Millie or Tilly etc

tiredmum2468 · 26/02/2021 22:13

I'm not keen I'll be honest it's a bit of a cat name but I like Katherine or Kate but not kitty 🐱

PhantomErik · 26/02/2021 10:31

Maybe full name Kathryn nn Kitty

DenisetheMenace · 26/02/2021 09:42

I like it, think it suits all ages.
Not sure about Cat, sounds a bit “harsh”?

VenusClapTrap · 26/02/2021 09:40

I love it. I know a teenage Kitty; it really suits her. She is very beautiful and very cool. She has a sister called Tabitha, interestingly.

Drunkenmonkey · 26/02/2021 08:26

I would use a longer name. My biggest fear would be Pussy jokes as a teen. I think Katarina is gorgeous.

Twizbe · 26/02/2021 06:58

@SmeleanorSmellstrop

My Tabitha is nicknamed Kitty! It's a well-known nickname for Tabitha but there's always one Mumsnet poster who always gets furious whenever anyone says this and insists Kitty can't be used as a name unless as a nickname for Katherine, so be warned, she'll be along soon 😂
I can see that ... but I always think of Tabitha Twitchitt who was a cat so the nn Kitty works
Sendingasurprise · 26/02/2021 05:38

I know a Kitty who had to endure many shouts of 'Hello Kitty" in the corridors at school. It was more common in that era (not sure if Hello Kitty is still around as,a brand now?).. and just a few idiot boys. But do be mindful ......give your daughter a escape route should she encounter this and be bothered by it.

Ilovemycat13 · 25/02/2021 23:13

I knew a lovely old lady called Kitty, and it suited her beautifully. I think it’s nice

Lexilooo · 25/02/2021 23:00

Kitty is lovely but call her Kathryn, Kathleen, Caitlin, or something and give her options.

If you call her Katherine on her birth certificate but Kitty day to day, she has the option to be Kate/Katy/Kathy/Kath/Kat/Kit as well if she prefers.

partyatthepalace · 25/02/2021 22:56

It’s cute as a nn especially for a little girl, but yes you really want a form of Katharine on the birth certificate - or I suppose it could be a feminine of Christopher given Kit is in a nn for that. Take those two name stems together and that’s a lot of options! And you’ll be able to think of a few other plausible options - Tabitha, Verity etc

ZebraKid71 · 25/02/2021 22:29

I like it but agree with the majority of the above, it really needs a longer, not so cutesy version.

I know a Tabitha that goes by Kitty, she's about 16 now and it started as a family nickname but she very rarely gets called Tabitha at all.

butnotthehippopotamus · 25/02/2021 22:03

My dd is Kitty (Katarina on birth certificate for options, but no one calls her that); she’s only 6 but loves her name and has really leaned into the cat thing! I’ve had some compliments, either saying it’s lovely or basically how it was a great-granny’s name and has nice connotations.
