Some of them. Arwen gets used a bit I think. There should be examples that are also names.

Naomi - fine
Camina - You could but it will be a pain for misspelling
Chrisjen - No sounds made up/or like a Scandie man’s name
Lyra - fine

Amos - fine
Arjun - no
Klaes - No
Ged - just about

Serenity
Kaylee
River

Malcolm
Hoban

I think lots of Star Trek first names are pretty usable anywhere, like Capt James T Kirk, was James. Spock less so!

I love this (as you can tell from my username) ☺️

I feel like Amos, Naomi, Holden... All usable. Camina is fine. Chrisjen maybe too far, but I don't know if that's an actual name - I just have never heard it anywhere else!

Majel? Not a character but for the actor Majel Barret who appeared in various iterations of Star Trek from the original series right up to the Next Generation films in the 2000s. Also was married to Gene Roddenbery, its creator.

Camina means 'walk' in Spanish. Just saying...

Chrisjen sounds like the awful name mashup (Renesmee) in the Twilight series.

If you have the time and patience, here is a huge list of sci-fi books with female leading characters: www.goodreads.com/list/show/2552.Best_Sci_Fi_Books_with_Female_Main_Characters

Doctor Who assistants could be somewhere to look? There's so many so I won't list them.

SeanChailleach · 25/02/2021 15:35

I mean names from sci fi books or films which can work as real names. Either closely associated with or invented specifically for.

Eg Lyra as many people know is the main character in His Dark Materials.

Chrisjen and Camina are Expanse characters, but I don't know how well known the series (or the spellings) are.

I would say Naomi is a "normal", average name and Lyra is quite popular now in the UK (fits in with Lara, Lila etc). Amos is biblical and well known, if not especially common. Your other choices sound recently invented or nn's imo.

I'm not sure what you mean by sci -fi names - do you mean names purely invented or made popular by fantasy authors/tv shows - Lyra, Arwen, Coraline, Inara, Caspian, Theon etc . Or do you mean generally used names/nn's that could sound "sci-fi" - these would tend to have a lot of x or z or s or v's in them imo - Zev, Lev, Xan, Lex, Ezra, Asa, River, Xenia, Zia, Cassia etc.
