Mary and Joseph

I'm due my second baby in May. My name is Mary. I want to call him Joseph. We aren't in the least bit religious, I just love the name and the shortening Joe and Joey.

Will this be a big mistake? Will he / we be ridiculed forever?

Obviously he will call me Mum / Mummy not Mary.
Not seeing many other names we like.
Confused

Love Joseph... Think so many Josephs, famous and infamous its not just seen as bible name.

Siblings... No... I wouldn't do that combination..
A parent and child... Absolutely no issue...
Would you feel different if your husband was a Joseph and you were having a girl so considering Mary..

What does your DH/DP think... They will be the one shouting Mary and Joseph...

My friend is very anti religious and has 3 children with very biblical names... That surprises me..

I love the name Joseph. You can always be Mary and Joe anyway.

BarbaraofKent · 20/02/2021 16:54

I think that's fine. I thought you were going to ask about siblings called Mary and Joseph which would obviously be a huge no no, but I think mother and son is fine, especially if he is going to be known as Joe/Joey. I lovely the name Joey!

It might raise a few comments but I have heard far far worse in real life and no one is that bothered!

I probably personally wouldn’t, I would try to go for a different jo variant (many of which are also bibilical if you like that sound, but not as directly linked). Joel, Jonas, Jonah. However if you really love the name and nothing else comes anywhere near close, just go for it.

I know someone who considered this. They didn't do it in the end, because they had the additional issue that the baby was born on Christmas day.

Personally though I wouldn't think it would be a problem. As a child I didn't even know the first names of my friends' parents. And as an adult I'd think nothing of it.

Hmmmm, Tricky one, if you love it go for it! It’s a lovely name 💙
