Hipster names

I keep seeing references to names being ‘hipster’ on here so just out of curiosity what would you say are hipster names of 2020/21?

It seems I’m quite partial to a hipster name judging by some of the comments on MNGrin. So would be helpful for ideas too!

The most hipster family I know have a boy named Wolf.

Linny88 · 18/02/2021 10:23

We’re in east london and the “hipster” parents seem to go for boys names for girls (things like Leonard for a girl), nature names like Tulip, Juniper, Wolf, Fox and Forest....old lady names like Pearl and Edie and then everybody at once decided Otis was a really great name....maybe because of the TV show Sex Education....and then there are the names like Early, Ace and Sunday

Firebird83 · 17/02/2021 00:27

The most hipster people I know have a Pearl and a Frida.

You're right. It's fascinating.

I think that's why I found it unusual to hear someone ask about hipster names because round here that would seem quite try hard.

Groovy in that sense is something I've never come across either.

It's funny how slang words evolve in different areas Lola!

I remember when I was in Northern Ireland years ago, teenagers used the word "groovy" to mean uncool, frumpy, 'lame'! Like "oh look at those groovy shoes, who'd wear them"? I never heard it used that way anywhere else, just in one town in NI!

LolaSmiles · 16/02/2021 11:42

BallsToYouSue
That's interesting.
It's typically used slightly pejoratively in my area to refer to those who want to draw attention to the fact that they are so outside the mainstream.

To look at that urban dictionary definition, someone with those interests wouldn't have a particular name in my area, but if someone was big into alerting everyone to the fact that they don't do mainstream or said things like 'oh just this nice indie folk fusion band, you probably wouldn't have heard of them', then that would be branded hipster because it's like they're trying to prove they're different.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 10:56

@BallsToYouSue

The Urban Dictionary definition: "Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20s and 30s that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter."
Sorry, that was for @LolaSmiles.

No the word hipster isn't always pejorative actually @LolaSmiles Smile. In London, it is used in a gentle way to describe a sub group of people. A bit like emo or goth. Sometimes it is taken as a compliment as well.

I think what you are describing is maybe "try hard".

LolaSmiles · 16/02/2021 10:52

I always thought hipster was someone trying to be cool and edgy for the sake of appearing different from everyone else. That would make hipster baby names the names that are about the parent expressing how quirky they are.

@babynamelover my daughters name is among them! Currently ttc again and rather than post ‘what goes with...’ I think the hipster thing is more helpful. I just seem to be drawn to these types of names.

NZ 2020
Rising in popularity names

Maeve, Margot, Olive, Quinn, Harlow, Billie & Aurora

Oakley, Nikau, Louis, Quinn, River, Luka, Bodhi & Flynn

NEW 2020

Maeve, Margot, Rosie, Delilah & Iris.
Oakley, River, Manaia & Ari.

Not sure which of those you would classify as hipster?

Girls all have a very soft sound to them whilst boys are heavily nature based/hippy feel.

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 16/02/2021 08:23

Quite a lot of the names on the long lists I see as quite classic? At least they were on our list and I am very, very uncool.

For me I think it's more cool, edgy names or unusual nature names. Or the ultimate in hipster is named after a 'cool' musician. So Bowie, Joni, Zeppelin, Hendrix. Something like that.

abitfunny · 16/02/2021 08:17

I don’t see Beau as a hipster name at all. I’m originally from Essex and a lot of the glam TOWIE type mums there have boys called Beau.

Hipster names to me are earthy, nature inspired or surfer style. Names like Arlo, River, Juniper, Saxon, Atticus, Cosmo, Bodhi, Fern, Zen, I could go on.

I like most of the above though. I’d rather have a son called Beau than a William for example. It’s just down to personal preference.

babynamelover · 16/02/2021 08:11

To me hipster is not popular but less mainstream and like someone mentioned less name like so herbs, animals, nature or word related. But maybe I'm thinking hippy haha.

I guess the true definition is something on the edge or the beginning of being cool ahead of the pack right?

Whatsyourflava · 16/02/2021 08:08

@manicinsomniac your parents probably didn't have access to any lists - they weren't produced like that in the 80s so theyd have no idea with Rebecca

zigaziga · 16/02/2021 07:15

@Limpshade

5 out of the 10 babies in my local baby group (hipster area) were called either Beau or Bowie Grin
Oh my gosh, yes to Beau (or Bo?!). I once met a hipster on the central line (the most hipster of tube lines?) who had a son called Beau.

Trendy names which everyone thinks is a real find until they realise there are 15 others within a 50 foot radius

Ah, ok. An astonishing number of parents seem to make this mistake with very common names. I'm a Rebecca. My parents swear blind they thought it was 'pretty and uncommon'. I was born in the 80s ...

I have 2 friends who both called their children Amelia in the last 8 years and said they didn't know any others at the time! Same with an Olivia.

I have nothing against popular names. They're usually popular for a reason. But don't people look at lists?!
