Hi all just wondering what your thoughts are on naming a baby Emily if she will have a cousin she sees a lot, but 10 years older, called Emma? Is this too close or acceptable?! Thanks!

On the original question though, we have a Laura and a Lauren in my family, two of about 20 cousins. It has been fine.

Bilgepumper · 16/02/2021 08:45

No problem, lovely names.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 08:43

Amelie and also Amelia / Emilia. Yes, taken all together those names are extremely common I think.

It doesn't have to be an issue though. Popularity doesn't bother everyone. Doesn't especially bother me if I absolutely LOVE a name.

ellenpartridge · 16/02/2021 08:43

Completely fine I think

littlemisslozza · 16/02/2021 08:40

Emily and Amelie sound very similar. Lots of Amelie's around here at the moment. Not that it's necessarily an issue but the sound of the names is so close that if you put them together they are very popular, more than one in every class in my DC school. Depends if that bothers you.

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 08:32

Sorry, was that a bit too geeky 🤓😂? I just love stats is all!!

BallsToYouSue · 16/02/2021 08:29

Actually @Mally2020, it's quite interesting; if you look at the stats, overall Emily is somewhere top ten (top 20?) but not that high. If you look at babies born to mums 35+ it is number 3. So significantly more popular among the age 35+ mums! Or is that what you meant?

Mally2020 · 16/02/2021 03:47

especially*

Mally2020 · 16/02/2021 03:47

Totally fine!

I've got an Emily and my niece is Emma 🙂

BallsToYouSue · 15/02/2021 20:10

Totally fine!

Emily is popular to the point of being a bit ubiquitous where I live, but that may not be an issue where you are.

Serin · 15/02/2021 19:30

Of course its fine, I have 2 first cousins with exactly the same first name as me. All of us named after our grandmother!

Kanaloa · 15/02/2021 18:38

For cousins I think it’s fine. I actually have the same first name as my cousin, so she was big Kanaloa and I was little Kanaloa. And lots of boys in my family share a family name, I think 3 of my cousins have it. The bigger cousin might even like it.

Milkshake7489 · 15/02/2021 18:18

How close are you? If you're the type of family that spends a lot of time together they are probably a bit too similar...

If you only see each other a couple of times a year it doesn't really matter Smile.

babynamelover · 15/02/2021 18:00

It's fine

I'm Anna and have a first cousin Hannah.

GintyMcGinty · 15/02/2021 17:47

Absolutely fine and both are great classic names that have stood the test of time.

Whatsyourflava · 15/02/2021 17:45

Definitely fine
Both such lovely classic names too

halcyondays · 15/02/2021 17:44

It’s fine for cousins. Would be too similar for sisters.

mamablondie33 · 15/02/2021 17:41

Absolutely fine! They are different names, classic and 10 years apart. Emily is lovely!

sunflowertulip · 15/02/2021 16:50

Not ideal but not bad either if it's the name you really love. I know two cousins a few months apart called Oliver and Olivia which I wouldn't have gone with.

NameChange30 · 15/02/2021 16:47

Too similar for siblings but fine for cousins

Nell96 · 15/02/2021 16:45

Absolutely fine

NeverWillIEver · 15/02/2021 16:37

The Em bit wouldn't bother me with cousins 10 years apart.

I'd do it.

Ultimatecougar · 15/02/2021 16:28

I wouldn't. They both get shortened to Em whether you intend to or not.
